Description
Dog Breed: German Shepherd Dog (medium coat). Meet Jewels, the German Shepherd mix! Jewels is an adolescent 10 month old spayed female German Shepherd, We donât know much about her life before the Shelter. Shelter staff have observed that Jewels is eager for attention and is easy to leash up to go for adventures. Although she approaches people cautiously, she warms up and then is easy to pet and handle all over. Jewels first met a female pug and was a bit unsure. She next met a female husky around her size who said âletâs play!â with a bit too much enthusiasm. Jewels backed away and avoided interaction. It seems that Jewels is a bit under-socialized with new people and other dogs. If there is another dog in the home, it is recommended that they meet at the Shelter prior to adoption. Jewels will likely need some patience decompressing from Shelter life and acclimating to her adoptive home. We anticipate that once she is home with her people, she will bond strongly and blossom. Could it be with you? The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Foundation is now offering âPawsitivity Bucksâ with every dog adoption. This $200 training voucher is a way for newly adopted canines and their guardians to connect with local positive reinforcement based behavior consultants and get their relationship started off on the right paw! Please note: Our Santa Cruz locationâs Shelter hours are 11-6pm, 7 days a week! Although clients can walk through and see any animals in their kennels during open hours, we end âmeet and greetsâ (aka meeting an animal out of the kennel) at 4:30pm every day. If youâd like to meet an animal out of the kennel, please arrive before 4:00pm to allow for time to discuss individual animals and meet them.

Overview:
The German Shepherd Dog, a truly iconic breed, originated in Germany in the late 19th century, primarily for herding sheep. They are easily recognizable by their athletic, medium-to-large build, typically weighing between 50-90 pounds, with a distinct double coat that can be black and tan, sable, or solid black. Known for their intelligence and loyalty, German Shepherds possess a remarkably trainable and courageous temperament, making them exceptional working dogs in fields like police and service work. While generally good with families when properly socialized, their high energy levels and need for mental stimulation make them unsuitable for apartment living without significant daily exercise. Prospective owners should be aware of common health concerns such as hip and elbow dysplasia, as well as degenerative myelopathy, underscoring the importance of responsible breeding and regular veterinary care.
