Description
Dog Breed: Hound / Mixed. Hi there! My name is River and I am 13 years old. I am a sweet, curious girl that loves to explore and take walks to smell the flowers. Despite my age, I still have some pep in my step and will prance when I walk! I came into the shelter as a stray, and unfortunately, no one came forward to claim me. In my short time at the shelter, I have been tested with other animals and I do well with other calm dogs and I seem to be pretty disinterested in cats. I could do well in a home with children that are respectful of my age and the boundaries that come with seniors like me. I keep my kennel pretty clean and use the bathroom outside (preferably off leash - I likely had a fenced in yard in my past home so that is what I am used to) so while staff cannot guarantee I am housetrained, I sure show signs that I am! A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
