Meet Sokka, a handsome 5-year-old Australian Cattle Dog weighing about 45 pounds who is ready to find an active home of his own! This intelligent, affectionate boy is leash trained, crate trained, rides beautifully in the car, and loves nothing more than a good game of fetch. Tennis balls don't stand a chance, stuffed toys quickly lose their squeakers, and you'll often find Sokka patiently waiting by the toy cabinet, hoping it's time to play. When playtime is over, he transforms into a total cuddle bug who loves butt scratches, resting his head in your lap, and staying close to his favorite people—he truly is the definition of a velcro dog. Sokka is highly intelligent, knows his basic commands along with cues like "place," "quiet," and "backup," and is eager to learn, although he occasionally shows the classic independent streak that Australian Cattle Dogs are known for. He enjoys adventures, car rides, and is very food motivated, making training fun and rewarding. Sokka gets along well with cats and has successfully lived with a friendly female dog as well as a younger 70-pound male Heeler, though he can be more selective with some male dogs and generally prefers doing his own thing rather than playing with other dogs. He does best with calm introductions and dogs that respect his space. A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
