Dog Breed: Australian Shepherd (medium coat). Meet Honey! Honey is a 3½-year-old sweetheart with the gentlest soul. She has come a long way, but she’s still learning that the world can be a safe place. Because of this, she is looking for a very patient and understanding adopter who will allow her to adjust at her own pace. Honey absolutely loves other dogs and would thrive in a home with a confident canine companion to help show her the ropes. She also gets along well with cats and is wonderful in her crate. She is an extremely timid girl and will need several weeks—possibly longer—to fully decompress in a new home. New people can be very scary for her, and earning her trust takes time. Her future family should understand that she may not be comfortable being touched right away, and that’s okay. Giving her the space and patience she needs will help her build confidence and form an incredible bond when she’s ready. Honey currently takes medication to help manage her anxiety, and she has been doing well with the extra support. Because of her sensitive nature, she would do best in a quiet home without children. A securely fenced yard is also preferred, as it will provide her with a safe environment to explore and gain confidence. Honey isn’t looking for a perfect home—she’s looking for the right one. If you’re the kind of person who understands that love isn’t always instant and are willing to let her blossom on her own timeline, you’ll be rewarded with one of the most loyal companions you could ever ask for. Overview:
The Australian Shepherd, despite its name, actually originated in the western United States during the 19th century, bred primarily for herding livestock on ranches. These striking dogs are medium-sized with a sturdy build, often sporting captivating merle coats (blue or red) and piercing blue, amber, or marbled eyes, sometimes with two different colors (heterochromia). Known for their exceptional intelligence and high energy, Aussies possess a strong work drive and thrive on having a "job" to do, whether it's agility, obedience, or extensive exercise. Their temperament is generally loyal, affectionate, and good-natured with their families, though they can be reserved with strangers. Due to their high exercise requirements and need for mental stimulation, they are best suited for active families or individuals with ample outdoor space and a commitment to training; apartment living is generally not ideal. Potential owners should also be aware of common health concerns like hip and elbow dysplasia and certain eye conditions, including Collie Eye Anomaly (CEA) and Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA).
