Description

Dog Breed: Great Pyrenees (long coat). Meet Duke! He is a male Great Pyrenees, around 90lbs and almost 3 yrs old. He is gentle, sweet, and mellow. Duke is great with kids, including babies. He is careful, calm, and gentle. He loves to lay his head in your lap or on your foot. He is good with dogs and gets along with all the dogs at the dog park, although he is mostly interested in saying hi to all the people. He does well with the young hyper dog in his foster home but will stand up for himself if he is being pestered too much or will step in if there is a scuffle at the park. He is unfazed by little dogs and the cats are boring to him. He likes toys but he would rather do an imitation of a throw rug. He likes to chill and lounge near people / dogs. He enjoys investigating everything, he has been guilty of stealing food if given the chance. He likes roaming so his backyard will need to be secured. Duke does not tolerate crates and will injure himself to get out, however he does great left unattended in the home and has no need for one. He isn't a fan of small areas. He is house trained and does well in the car. He doesn't love walks but will walk with you as long as you want. We don't think Duke has ever lived without another dog, so he would prefer to go to a home with another dog. Duke is a low energy, all around loving guy. He is currently in a foster home in DFW area of Texas. Out of state adopters are required to provide transport. Duke is neutered and up to date on vaccines. His adoption fee is $250. Great Pyrenees

A.K.A.: Pyrenean Mountain Dog, Patou, Chien de Montagne des Pyrénées, Pyrenean, Big White Dog, Bear Dog, Gentle Giant, Great Pyr, Pyr
Overview:

The Great Pyrenees is a majestic and ancient breed, originating in the Pyrenean mountains between France and Spain, where they served as formidable livestock guardians. Physically, they are large, powerful dogs, easily recognized by their thick, double coat, typically white (though sometimes marked with badger, grey, or tan), and a distinctive "double dewclaw" on their hind legs. Despite their imposing size, their temperament is generally calm, gentle, and remarkably patient, making them excellent companions. They possess a natural protectiveness, which translates to a watchful eye over their families and property. While loving and tolerant with children, their size and barking tendencies make them less suited for small apartment living; a home with a yard is ideal. Prospective owners should be aware of common health concerns such as hip and elbow dysplasia, patellar luxation, and certain eye conditions, emphasizing the importance of responsible breeding. Their independent nature also means they require consistent, positive reinforcement training.
