This handsome 7-year-old Pit Bull mix weighs 39 pounds and is ready to find a family to spend his golden years with. Houston is good with kids, good with other dogs, and is said to be housebroken. He’s a sweet, loyal guy who would make an incredible companion for a family looking for a best friend who is past the puppy stage but still has plenty of adventures, cuddles, and happy moments left to share. Houston is currently recovering from hematomas in both ears, but he’s healing well and taking everything in stride. Despite everything he’s been through, his joyful spirit shines bright. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
