Description
Dog Breed: Dachshund (short coat). Hi, I'm Freckles — and I've got a very specific set of skills: expert napper, professional toy destroyer, and full-time lap occupant. I like to sit on top of my people (personal space is overrated), and when I'm not doing that, I'm happily rearranging my toy collection. At night, I retreat to my crate like the responsible little gentleman I am. I'm five years old, which means I've got the goofiness of a younger pup with the good sense to know what I actually want out of life — mostly snacks, walks, and you. My Ideal Home Good with other dogs, kids of all ages, and everyone in the house. I'm house-trained, crate-trained, and love a good leashed walk (just not through wet grass — I have my limits). A Few Important Things to Know - Skin irritation: I've got some irritation under my legs that my foster is having evaluated soon. Nothing has slowed me down, but my future family should be ready to follow up on treatment. - Texture preferences: I refuse to walk on wet grass. Non-negotiable. Bring me a towel or plan our walks accordingly. What I Bring to the Table I'm an easygoing guy who gets along with just about everybody — dogs, kids, adults, you name it. My vet visit came back with great bloodwork and great teeth, and I even lost a couple of pounds to get down to a healthier weight. I came to DARE after my original person passed away, and his family made sure I landed somewhere safe. Now I'm ready for my actual forever spot — ideally one with a lap, a few toys, and dry grass. If you know I'm your forever pup, fill out an adoption application at daretorescue/adoption-application — and don't forget to put Freckles on your application! If you know I'm your forever pup, fill out an adoption application at daretorescue/adoption-application — and don't forget to put my name on your application! Can't adopt but want to help? You can sponsor my care while I wait for my forever home — donate at daretorescue/donation or send a check payable to DARE: DARE | PO Box 21161 | Tampa, FL 32210

Overview:
The Dachshund, affectionately known as the "wiener dog," is a fascinating breed originating in Germany, primarily bred to hunt badgers and other burrowing animals. Their most distinctive physical characteristic is their long, low-slung body and short, muscular legs, a feature perfectly adapted for tunneling. They come in three coat types – smooth, longhaired, and wirehaired – and various sizes, from miniature to standard. Temperamentally, Dachshunds are known for being courageous, curious, and often quite playful, with a surprising amount of energy. While they are intelligent, their independent nature can make training a delightful challenge. Their small size and relatively low exercise requirements make them well-suited for apartment living, and they can be wonderful companions for families, though early socialization is key, especially with children and other pets. Regarding health, their unique body shape predisposes them to intervertebral disc disease (IVDD), so careful handling and weight management are crucial.
