Dog Breed: Hound / Mixed. *Name: Rufus *Age: about 3 years old *Current Weight: 45 pounds *Adoption fee: $475 Rufus arrived at the shelter carrying the scars of a life we can only imagine. One of our rescue partners reached out to SNARR after seeing him and knowing he deserved a chance. We couldn't turn our backs on him. We believe Rufus had been in a horrific fight before he was found. One of his ears had been torn so badly that it became severely infected. Despite everyone's best efforts, the infection was too extensive, and the only way to save his life was to remove his ear. His recovery wasn't easy. There were painful days, countless bandage changes, medications, and moments when healing seemed like it would take forever. Through it all, Rufus never gave up. He continued to trust the people caring for him, wagging his tail and accepting every gentle touch as if he knew they were fighting for him. Today, Rufus is healthy, healed, and finally ready to leave the pain of his past behind. His missing ear doesn't define him. If anything, it makes him even more special. It's a reminder of everything he's survived and how incredibly resilient he is. Now all Rufus wants is what every dog deserves—a family to call his own. A soft bed. A yard to explore. A couch to curl up on. Someone who will love him not despite his scars, but because they tell the story of a survivor. Rufus has already lived through the hardest chapter of his life. A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
