Description
Dog Breed: Unknown breed (short coat). Adoption Fee: 200.00. Def Leppard is a snuggler but also plays hard; she likes people but takes time to be comfortable being picked up. She is a "let's play" starter, playing keep-away or stealing her sisters' toys! Def Leppard has a good appetite. She loves to play indoors or outdoors, has been socialized with big dogs while in foster care and is learning 'sit' from her foster caregiver! Def Leppard and her sisters were transferred to Valley Humane on 3/6 from Oakland Animal Services. She weighs 10.3 pounds. This dog had surgery on 5/22/26 for a condition called luxating patella in the left knee. This means that she had surgery to stabilize her left knee cap and to prevent it from spontaneously popping out of place, resulting in lameness and pain. At this time, she is healing well from surgery and her knee cap is stable in the correct position. As expected, she continues to favor the left hind leg and she has been cleared by the veterinary surgeon to return to normal activity. We are hopeful that with time and continued physical therapy, she will continue to slowly improve and use the leg normally. Even with early surgical repair at a young age, it is possible (although we hope, unlikely) that she will need a future surgery for this condition once all of her growth plates have closed. It is recommended that the adopting family share this history with their family veterinarian and seek consultation with a veterinary surgeon in the future if needed. A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
