Rescued from Downey Shelter, this little boy has experienced more heartbreak than any dog his size ever should. At just 18 pounds, he's proof that the biggest hearts often come in the smallest packages. Despite his past, Matthew still chooses love. Every day, he is learning that not all people will let him down. He is slowly rebuilding his trust, and watching him open his heart is something truly special. Matthew is neutered, fully vaccinated, and microchipped. He is a smart, gentle, and incredibly loving dog who simply needs a family willing to be patient and let him know he is finally safe. Once he trusts you, he'll be your loyal shadow and faithful best friend. He gets along wonderfully with people, dogs, and cats, making him an easy addition to almost any home. One of his favorite things in the world is going for car rides. He'll happily sit beside you as the perfect co-pilot, soaking in every moment and turning heads everywhere he goes with his adorable face. Matthew isn't looking for perfection—he's looking for someone who will love him as family. A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
