Description
Dog Breed: Pit Bull Terrier (medium coat). This fun, goofy boy would be love to be your `novio` or boyfriend! He knows sit, shake, and down. 8/3 UPDATE: Novio is on our Call to Action List due to a bite in July 2026 without an identifiable trigger. Novio came to us as a stray in November 2025 after he was found as a stray wearing a muzzle. Upon arrival, Novio displayed defensive behavior (growled, barked and backed away from the intake officer with his tail tucked), but as he got more comfortable, he started becoming more social with staff and volunteers. In a recent foster home, Novio bit a member of the family. While the injuiry was minor, it did break skin. Novio has displayed similar behavior while in the volunteer office, and has lunged and barked at people entering the room. We have not been able to identify a pattern as to why he behaves aggressively with some people and not others, which makes safe placement and counseling extremely difficult. The foster found Novio to be otherwise friendly, and he did not display any resource guarding or handling sensitivities during his evaluation at the shelter. Novio also struggles around other dogs and likely would be best in a home as an only dog. In playgroup, Novio must wear a muzzle due to this behavior, and has charged other dogs with his body stiff, pressing his muzzle hard against the other dogs, circling and staring, and he needs handler help to disengage. We do not feel Novio is safe for general adoption and have identified him as 'rescue preferred'. His lack of an identifiable trigger makes it difficult for interested adopters to be counseled, and the aggression is more than most adopters can handle safely. We are reaching out to our rescue partners in case your organization feels differently and wants to pull Novio and further explore his behavior and triggers prior to placement. We will be monitoring him while in our care and evaluating his pathway. A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
