Description
Dog Breed: Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (medium coat). Meet Squirt, our not so little pitbull mix. Squirt came to the Shelter after a good Samaritan found him as a scared stray and brought him to the Shelter for safety. Squirt is a shy guy who is finding the transition to the Shelter a bit difficult. He is not comfortable walking on leash at this time so adopters will need to have an environment that supports getting him out to a securely enclosed yard for potty breaks without the use of a leash.. while getting him a bit more comfortable with modern-day dog-hood. Squirt has a little softly wagging tail when meeting new people and likes to rest his head on peopleâs laps when comfortable to solicit attention. He does seem to perk up in the company of other dogs and enjoys romping around the yard with dogs he has met at the Shelter. A home with another dog may be a fit after a meet and greet at the Shelter. We do not have any history of Squirt with cats or children. Squirt is available for pre-adoption. Come meet him, fall in love and take him home after his neuter surgery. The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Foundation is now offering âPawsitivity Bucksâ with every dog adoption. This $200 training voucher is a way for newly adopted canines and their guardians to connect with local positive reinforcement based behavior consultants and get their relationship started off on the right paw! Please note: Our Santa Cruz locationâs Shelter hours are 11-6pm, 7 days a week! Although clients can walk through and see any animals in their kennels during open hours, we end âmeet and greetsâ (aka meeting an animal out of the kennel) at 4:30pm every day. If youâd like to meet an animal out of the kennel, please arrive before 4:00pm to allow for time to discuss individual animals and meet them

Breed overview
Overview:
A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
