Description
Dog Breed: Great Pyrenees (medium coat). Everest is an 8-year-old, 100-pound Great Pyrenees with a gentle soul and a heart that's still healing. When Everest arrived at the shelter, he was completely shut down. The unfamiliar sights, sounds, and chaos were simply too much. He was so frightened that he couldn't trust volunteers enough to walk on a leash, and we had to gently guide him to the play yard. Once there, he relaxed just enough to take in his surroundings, giving us hope that he's beginning to understand we're here to help, not hurt. But the most heartbreaking part comes when it's time to go back inside. Everest knows exactly which kennel is his. Without hesitation, he quietly walks to it, slips inside, lies down, and gazes out with a look that says he's still waiting for the life he once knew. It's impossible not to wonder what he's lost. Despite everything, Everest has remained incredibly gentle and tolerant with every volunteer who has cared for him. He's never asked for anything more than kindness and a little patience. What Everest needs now isn't just an adopter—he needs someone willing to show him that love didn't end when he entered the shelter. He deserves a soft bed instead of a concrete floor, peaceful days instead of kennel noise, and a family that will remind him he belongs again. If you have room in your heart and home for a quiet, loyal gentle giant, Everest is waiting. This big gorgeous guy has participated in shelter playgroups and may enjoy a compatible canine friend in his new home. Looking for a buddy for your dog? The Great Pyrenees is a majestic and ancient breed, originating in the Pyrenean mountains between France and Spain, where they served as formidable livestock guardians. Physically, they are large, powerful dogs, easily recognized by their thick, double coat, typically white (though sometimes marked with badger, grey, or tan), and a distinctive "double dewclaw" on their hind legs. Despite their imposing size, their temperament is generally calm, gentle, and remarkably patient, making them excellent companions. They possess a natural protectiveness, which translates to a watchful eye over their families and property. While loving and tolerant with children, their size and barking tendencies make them less suited for small apartment living; a home with a yard is ideal. Prospective owners should be aware of common health concerns such as hip and elbow dysplasia, patellar luxation, and certain eye conditions, emphasizing the importance of responsible breeding. Their independent nature also means they require consistent, positive reinforcement training.
