Description
Dog Breed: German Shepherd Dog (medium coat). Hi, World! I'm Freya and I'm 8 months old and the total package—sweet, affectionate, crate trained, potty trained, and I have excellent manners when taking treats (no finger-snatching here!). I've been working hard on my leash skills, and I've come a long way. I used to think every walk was a race, but now I happily match my human's pace. I've even learned that when my person stops, I should sit and wait like the polite lady I'm becoming. I'm an active girl who enjoys about three miles of walks every day, split between morning and evening, plus plenty of backyard playtime. Fetch? Absolutely! Zoomies? Also absolutely. My foster family gets a good laugh when I suddenly decide the backyard is my personal NASCAR track. Don't worry: I have a moderate energy level and do not require that much exercise but I do enjoy my walks. I currently live with a child and a 100-pound dog, and I couldn't be happier. I LOVE other dogs. (Seriously... love them.) I also adore kids and am incredibly gentle with them. While I'd love another dog to wrestle and play with, I'm respectful of other dogs' space if they're not in the mood. I'll ask nicely... and maybe ask again... and maybe bring them a toy. Speaking of toys... if it squeaks, bounces, rolls, or can be chewed, I probably already love it. Bones are pretty high on my favorites list too. The best part? I’m a great sharer. I don't guard my toys and don't mind if another dog decides they'd like to borrow one for a while. When it comes to meals, I'm pretty easygoing too. I'm a food grazer, which means I eat when I'm hungry instead of gobbling everything down at once. I'm not possessive about my food, and I don't mind if another dog walks by while I'm eating—or even sneaks a bite from my bowl. One of my favorite hobbies is soaking up the sunshine. Give me a nice sunny spot in the yard, and I'll happily stretch out for a little sunbathing session. I know the command "sit," sleep soundly in my crate every night, and during the day I often choose to hang out in it with the door open because it's my cozy little bedroom. I currently live in a home with a 4-foot fence. Could I jump it? Probably. Have I? Nope! I'm much more interested in hanging out with my people then planning a great escape. And if you're wondering about my size, I'm just about perfect—I weigh around 50 pounds, making me big enough for adventures but small enough to fit comfortably into family life. One more thing my foster family wants you to know: I have a pretty high prey drive, so they aren't sure a home with cats would be the best fit for me. I've never actually lived with a cat, so we don't know exactly how I would do. With the right cat and slow, proper introductions, it may work out, but I would probably be happiest in a home without feline roommates. My dream home would be with an active family that enjoys walks, adventures, and playtime. I'd especially love a canine sibling, but if I'm your one and only, I'd be thrilled with regular opportunities to make dog friends. If you're looking for a loving, playful, goofy, well-mannered companion who will keep you smiling every day, I think we should meet. I promise to bring the toys—you just bring the treats! If you're interested in adding me to your family, please contact your adoption coordinator. If you do not yet have an adoption coordinator, please complete an adoption application at .freedomgermanshepherdrescue. I am being fostered in Greensboro, NC.

Overview:
The German Shepherd Dog, a truly iconic breed, originated in Germany in the late 19th century, primarily for herding sheep. They are easily recognizable by their athletic, medium-to-large build, typically weighing between 50-90 pounds, with a distinct double coat that can be black and tan, sable, or solid black. Known for their intelligence and loyalty, German Shepherds possess a remarkably trainable and courageous temperament, making them exceptional working dogs in fields like police and service work. While generally good with families when properly socialized, their high energy levels and need for mental stimulation make them unsuitable for apartment living without significant daily exercise. Prospective owners should be aware of common health concerns such as hip and elbow dysplasia, as well as degenerative myelopathy, underscoring the importance of responsible breeding and regular veterinary care.
