Description
Dog Breed: Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (medium coat). Meet Roxy, the white pittie mix puppy. Roxy arrived to the Shelter after her previous guardian was unable to continue caring for her. She was described by her previous guardian as playful. Typical to a puppy her age, Roxy is still working on potty training. Adopters should plan to have time, patience and some yummy treats and/or fun toys to engage in rewards based training to bond and teach Roxy life skills and manners. Shelter staff have observed that Roxy may have some hearing impairment. She does not seem to be as responsive to sounds compared to the average puppy her age. Adopters should do some research on caring for a dog with hearing impairment prior to adoption to ensure they have the information and tools to succeed. Roxy may do well in a home with other animals. If there are dogs in the home, they should meet at the Shelter prior to adoption. Any other species of animals should be introduced in a slow, thoughtful manner in the home. Roxy is available for pre-adoption. Come meet her, fall in love and take her home after her spay surgery. The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Foundation is now offering âPawsitivity Bucksâ with every dog adoption. This $200 training voucher is a way for newly adopted canines and their guardians to connect with local positive reinforcement based behavior consultants and get their relationship started off on the right paw! Please note: Our Santa Cruz locationâs Shelter hours are 11-6pm, 7 days a week! Although clients can walk through and see any animals in their kennels during open hours, we end âmeet and greetsâ (aka meeting an animal out of the kennel) at 4:30pm every day. If youâd like to meet an animal out of the kennel, please arrive before 4:00pm to allow for time to discuss individual animals and meet them

Breed overview
Overview:
A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
