Description
Dog Breed: Pit Bull Terrier (medium coat). Zoey arrived at TJO severely underweight, but considering her happy demeanor she has been social. She's been excitable and happy to meet everyone and anyone during her stay here, but one thing she would truly love is her own home to relax and play in as much as she'd like! OTHER PETS: Zoey is eager to meet other dogs, but can be a bit too forward for some. She would likely do best with a tolerant dog with a similar energy level. [Case-By-Case (Must Meet First)] OWNER EXPERIENCE: Zoey is still currently on a refeeding plan to help her regain some weight, and will likely require a good relationship with a vet as she continues to heal from her previous body condition. She would do best with someone that has an established relationship with a primary vet. [Some Experience] KIDS: Zoey is very excited to meet new people, and that often presents with her jumping all over someone in an effort to get as close as possible. She has also shown some mild signs of resource guarding, and will likely do best in a home without young children. Resource-guarding is best helped by building confidence and 'trading up' with items of equal or higher value for everyone's safety, and to let Zoey know good things don't have to be lost. [15+ (Must Meet First)] ACTIVITY LEVEL: Zoey is an absolute ball of energy, and if given the chance will eagerly investigate any and all available counters in search of some treats. She's an active dog that will benefit from various forms of both physical and mental enrichment to keep her body and mind happy. Given time and practice with loose-leash walking and, she may even make a good, leashed hiking partner. [Olympic Athlete] VETERINARY CARE: Zoey arrived at TJO severely emaciated, and will likely require above average vet care as she continues to gain weight and throughout her life. [Above Average] LEVEL OF TRAINING NEEDED: Zoey is still learning new skills and fun tricks, and will do best learning with someone who can offer patience while she adjusts. Positive reinforcement will help Zoey not only learn her basic cues, but also help her to bond with her new owner as well. [Moderate] GROOMING: Routine brushing will help to minimize shedding in the home. [Minimal]

Breed overview
Overview:
A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
