Description

Dog Breed: Shiba Inu (short coat). Gemma is a tiny Shiba Inu with a very sweet heart and a brave little spirit. She is still learning that people can be safe. She enjoys being near humans, but she is not ready for petting or handling yet. Her foster home is helping her build confidence every day, and she is making progress at her own pace. Gemma absolutely loves other dogs. A kind, confident resident dog is required in her future home because she takes comfort and cues from other dogs. She has also done very well with cats. Because Gemma is so small and still fearful, she will need a securely fenced yard with no gaps or weak spots. She is not comfortable on leash yet and can panic when leashed, so her future home will need to be set up to keep her safe while she continues learning. In her foster home, she does well with kenneling and with going inside and outside without needing to be leashed or picked up. Gemma is about 90% potty trained and is working on taking treats from her foster mom’s hand. She will need a patient, gentle family that understands she may need time before she is ready for touch. Gemma’s perfect home will let her settle in at her own pace, give her the support of another dog, and celebrate the small wins. She is worth the patience, and watching her learn to trust will be incredibly rewarding. Adoption fee includes: Full veterinary exam, Alter, Prepaid microchip, Dewormed, Rabies vaccine (if age appropriate), Distemper combo vaccine(s) appropriate to age, Bordetella vaccine, 4DX (over 6 months of age), Flea/tick and heartworm preventative while in rescue. Adoption fee: $725.00

Shiba Inu

A.K.A.: Shiba, Shib, Japanese Shiba, Japanese Small Dog, Brushwood Dog, Little Brushwood Dog, Red Shiba, Black and Tan Shiba, Cream Shiba
Overview:

The Shiba Inu, a spirited and ancient breed originating from Japan, is renowned for its fox-like appearance and independent nature. Historically bred for hunting in mountainous regions, they possess a strong, athletic build with a distinctive curly tail and alert, expressive eyes. Their coat is typically short and dense, often displaying striking red, sesame, or black and tan colors, complete with a creamy "urajiro" underside. Temperamentally, Shibas are known for their intelligence, confidence, and sometimes aloof demeanor, yet they form strong bonds with their families. While they can be excellent companions, their strong prey drive and independent streak mean they require consistent training and socialization from a young age. They adapt well to apartment living provided they receive sufficient daily exercise, but a secure yard is always a plus. Generally a healthy breed, they can be prone to certain conditions like patellar luxation, hip dysplasia, and allergies, making responsible breeding and regular veterinary check-ups essential. Their unique personality and striking looks make them a captivating choice for experienced dog owners who appreciate a dog with character.
