Dog Breed: Unknown breed / mixed. Meet Moxie! Is she a hound? A baby cow? A spotted potato? Honestly... we're still taking guesses. Whatever she is, she's 100% adorable. If Moxie looks familiar, that's because her story touched hearts around the world after she came to PIPs in heartbreaking condition. But around here, we like to focus on the future—not the past—and Moxie's future is looking brighter every single day. Her skin is healing beautifully, her fur is already starting to grow back, she's gaining weight, and her appetite is nothing short of impressive. Best of all? Her mange is gone! She's officially clear, and now it's just a matter of letting her coat catch up to how good she's feeling on the inside. Moxie loves people, enjoys hanging out with the other dogs, and has discovered that toys, belly rubs, and running around the house are all pretty amazing. She's still due for two puppy vaccine boosters, which PIPs will cover through one of our veterinarians. She'll also be spayed once her skin has fully healed. We realized something this week: there's no reason Moxie has to finish healing in a foster home when she could be finishing that journey with the family who will love her forever. A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
