Description
Dog Breed: Australian Cattle Dog/Blue Heeler / Mixed (medium coat). Meet Tempa, the 13 year old Australian Cattle dog mix. Tempa came into the Shelter after some previous guardians were unable to continue caring for her. She has previously been an indoor dog who lived with other dogs. She also has some experience with children. Tempa has been around cats and sometimes chases them, but has never harmed them. A home with a dog-savvy cat paired with a slow, thoughtful introduction may be a fit in the next home. Tempa is a senior dog, despite still having lots of spunk. A home with an adopter who has the resources to take in and care for a senior dog (which will likely include more frequent vet visits) will be best. Please note: Our Santa Cruz locationâs Shelter hours are 11-6pm, 7 days a week! Although clients can walk through and see any animals in their kennels during open hours, we end âmeet and greetsâ (aka meeting an animal out of the kennel) at 4:30pm every day. If youâd like to meet an animal out of the kennel, please arrive before 4:00pm to allow for time to discuss individual animals and meet them

Overview:
A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
