CHEVY - AUSTRALIAN SHEPHERD DOG FOR ADOPTION

Australian Shepherd Dogs For Adoption in Denver , CO, USA

For Adoption

Description

Dog Breed: Australian Shepherd. Chevy is an approx 18 mos old 43# Australian Shepherd. He some how ended up in a small rural TX shelter. They try their best to find rescues for dogs there but since no one had stepped up, Chevy went on their euthanasia list for space. There was no light left in his eyes, then one of our rescue partners stepped in to get him out and ready to come to CO. Chevy is a big goof and completely sweet but doesn’t have the confidence to approach people he doesn’t know yet so another well balanced, playful dog or dogs in his new home is a must. Chevy will now approach his foster for pets and to gently nibble her fingers or pockets for cookie crumbs. Once he comes out of his shell, it’s game on! He likes thrashing plush toys, counter surfing, and stealing blankets from his foster siblings. Chevy can be a little awkward reading doggie body language but he’s slowly learning and just wants another dog to play with him. He loves kongs, puzzle toys, anything that hides a treat inside, and is very food motivated. A crate is his safe space and where he sleeps. He has learned that walkies are fun esp on a long line where he can sniff and pee. He is potty trained when let out often but will need to be closely supervised at first so he doesn’t lift his leg in a new environment. He’d likely do best in a quiet suburban, rural, or mountainous environment rather than with busy city and traffic noises. Watching Chevy’s personality emerge is truly rewarding and he will continue to blossom in a patient and loving home. Chevy is looking for someone experienced with undersocialized, shy pups. Big movements frighten him but he might be ok with a calm, respectful, dog savvy child 12+. We have not cat tested him but he was ok with a barn cat in his previous foster home in TX. He requires a secure fenced yard, preferably with 5-6’ fence and humans who aren’t gone long hours. We do consider him a moderate flight risk until he understands that he’s home and safe. If you’re interested in meeting Chevy, please complete a meet and greet application at .corgisandfriends/forms as the first step. We require the application, home and reference check, and meet with everyone in the home. Chevy is neutered, utd on vaccs, chipped, and HW-. His adoption fee is $400 and we do not adopt outside of Colorado.

Australian Shepherd

A.K.A.: Aussie, Little Blue Dog, Spanish Shepherd, Pastor Vasco, New Mexican Shepherd, California Shepherd, American Shepherd, New Mexican Sheepdog, California Sheepdog, American Sheepdog, Australian Sheepdog
Overview:

The Australian Shepherd, despite its name, actually originated in the western United States during the 19th century, bred primarily for herding livestock on ranches. These striking dogs are medium-sized with a sturdy build, often sporting captivating merle coats (blue or red) and piercing blue, amber, or marbled eyes, sometimes with two different colors (heterochromia). Known for their exceptional intelligence and high energy, Aussies possess a strong work drive and thrive on having a "job" to do, whether it's agility, obedience, or extensive exercise. Their temperament is generally loyal, affectionate, and good-natured with their families, though they can be reserved with strangers. Due to their high exercise requirements and need for mental stimulation, they are best suited for active families or individuals with ample outdoor space and a commitment to training; apartment living is generally not ideal. Potential owners should also be aware of common health concerns like hip and elbow dysplasia and certain eye conditions, including Collie Eye Anomaly (CEA) and Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA).
