Description

Dog Breed: Chihuahua (short coat). ***George is currently located at and available for adoption our rescue in Georgia. He can be transported to New Jersey and available for adoption at the Tractor Supply in Ringoes over the July 15-16 weekend. An application for his adoption can be submitted at socorescue (no need to register or login). Questions about George and/or our adoption policy should be sent to socorescue8gmail; please do not call the Rescue's number.*** To say that George had a rough time prior to coming into our rescue would be an understatement. Right after his former owner passed away, he was found wandering the streets of Dublin, GA with a bite mark around his neck. His injury was so severe that the Dublin-Laurens Animal Control took him directly to the vet's office with instructions to euthanize him. Once the staff at Animal Medical Clinic of Lauren's Co met George, they convince the AC to let us rescue him and save his life. While at the vet's office, George had surgery to his neck (which the animal control paid for), was neutered and given a heartworm test, which came back positive. While he has now fully recovered from his injury and just as he was to start his heartworm treatment injections, Dr. Potts discovered that George also had a heart murmur and has strongly advised against proceeding with the injections since that could have some very adverse affects on him, including possibly death. Dr. Potts has suggested that George be kept on his heartworm preventatives and let the worms die off naturally, which is commonly referred to as the "Slow-Kill" method of heartworm treatment. We'll gladly discuss this in more detail with any potential adopters. Despite his run of misfortune and diagnosis of heartworms and the heart murmur, George still displays a lot of love and playfulness. He gets along great with other dogs and instantly becomes friends with any humans that he meets. He's very affectionate, loving to snuggle up on our laps and be held. He's also displayed great house and crate training ability. He has a very calm, relaxed personality and rarely barks. He's also well-behaved during car rides. George has lots of life left to live and even more love to give to anyone who desires such. George would make a great companion to a retired/senior person who is looking for a great companion. As mentioned, George has now been neutered, received an update of all of his annual vaccinations and de-wormings. While he's shown house training abilities, he may need a refresher course once in a new home.

Overview:

The Chihuahua, a captivating breed known for its diminutive size, boasts an ancient and somewhat mysterious origin, with most theories pointing to Mexico as its birthplace, potentially descending from the "Techichi," a small companion dog of the Toltec civilization. Physically, they are easily recognizable by their small, compact bodies, large expressive eyes, and erect ears, appearing in both smooth and long-coated varieties, showcasing a vast array of colors and markings. Despite their tiny stature, Chihuahuas possess a big personality; they are often described as spirited, alert, and fiercely loyal to their owners, sometimes displaying a bold and confident demeanor. While their small size makes them exceptionally well-suited for apartment living, they thrive in homes where they receive ample attention and mental stimulation. They can be good family pets for older children who understand how to interact gently with a small dog, but their delicate build makes them less suitable for boisterous toddlers. Regarding health, Chihuahuas can be prone to certain conditions like patellar luxation, heart problems, and dental issues, making regular veterinary check-ups crucial for their well-being.
