Dog Breed: Terrier / Mixed (medium coat). Meet Gravy! Gravy is a one year old, 11 pound sweetheart with a gentle nature and a heart full of love. Like many dogs, he can be a little shy when meeting new people, but with a little patience and kindness, his true personality begins to shine. Once he feels safe, Gravy becomes a devoted companion who loves gentle pets, tasty treats, and curling up beside his favorite people. He is learning basic commands like sit, stay, and come, responds very well to redirection, and enjoys following the lead of the resident dog in his foster home. Gravy is house trained, crate trained, and walks nicely on a leash. He gets along well with other dogs and enjoys having canine friends around. He thrives in a calm, predictable environment where he can settle into a routine, continue building his confidence, and feel secure. One of the most rewarding things about Gravy is watching him grow more confident each day. A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
