Description

Dog Breed: Dachshund (short coat). Hi, I'm Chloe — a chocolate-coated standard dachshund with a tail that basically never stops wagging. I'm about 6 years old, I'm calm and easygoing around the house, and my idea of a perfect day is a good leash walk followed by a long nap in my bed (or my crate — I'm a fan of both). I came into foster care after my person had to move into assisted living, which wasn't my choice, but I'm handling the change like a champ. Give me a little time to settle in and you'll find I'm a pretty chill, food-motivated girl who just wants her people and her routine back. My Ideal Home Good with other dogs, older children, men, and women. House-trained and crate-trained. I'd do best with a family who can help me lose about 5 pounds through leash walks and reasonable portions — I love to eat, maybe a little too much. A Few Important Things to Know Still settling in: On my first day in foster care, I growled at a larger dog I was meeting for the first time. My foster mom thinks it was a new-environment reaction rather than my normal personality, but adopters should plan a slow, supervised introduction with any resident dogs. Handling sensitivity: I'm not a fan of having my mouth examined, and my vet notes that I can nip during procedures like exams or nail trims. I do best with a calm, experienced handler who respects my space during vet visits and grooming. Can be vocal: I've been described as barky, especially when I want something or someone's at the door. I'm otherwise calm and settled in the house. Weight management: At 32 lbs, I'm a bit overweight for my frame. I'll need a family committed to portion control and regular walks to help me get to a healthier weight. What I Bring to the Table I'm a sweet, tail-wagging girl who's calm in the house, easy on the leash, and quick to settle into a routine. I've had a lot of change thrown at me lately, but I'm rolling with it — and I'd love nothing more than a steady home where I can be somebody's favorite couch companion again. If you know I'm your forever pup, fill out an adoption application at daretorescue/adoption-application — and don't forget to put my name on your application! Can't adopt but want to help? Overview:

The Dachshund, affectionately known as the "wiener dog," is a fascinating breed originating in Germany, primarily bred to hunt badgers and other burrowing animals. Their most distinctive physical characteristic is their long, low-slung body and short, muscular legs, a feature perfectly adapted for tunneling. They come in three coat types – smooth, longhaired, and wirehaired – and various sizes, from miniature to standard. Temperamentally, Dachshunds are known for being courageous, curious, and often quite playful, with a surprising amount of energy. While they are intelligent, their independent nature can make training a delightful challenge. Their small size and relatively low exercise requirements make them well-suited for apartment living, and they can be wonderful companions for families, though early socialization is key, especially with children and other pets. Regarding health, their unique body shape predisposes them to intervertebral disc disease (IVDD), so careful handling and weight management are crucial.
