Dog Breed: Schnauzer / Terrier / Mixed. I'm Ellie Mae. I was adopted as a puppy and just returned to the Humane Society after a year. I got bigger than the adopters expected :(. When I was found as a puppy, my litter were thought to be wire fox terrier mixed with dachshund, but nowadays, people are thinking I'm really a schnauzer/terrier mix. I'm sure a cutie and at 40 lbs and 1 year, 4 months old, I'm the perfect size. My previous adopter said that I'm afraid of strangers, but I want to learn if you'd be inclined to help me. Some pets are in foster homes or may already have visits scheduled, so appointments help ensure I’ll be available. Polk County Humane Society is located in Bolivar, Missouri, and we welcome adopters from any state. We have access to a transport to Aurora, CO. Other outofstate adopters either travel to Missouri or arrange & pay for air transport. Virtual meetandgreets are available on the appointment request.

A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
