Description
Dog Breed: Dachshund (long coat). Adoption Fee: 500. Kojo is a sweet 6-year-old, 12-pound dachshund looking for his forever home. After his person became ill and could no longer care for him, Kojo’s world changed suddenly. He’s now safe in foster care and ready for his next chapter. Kojo is fully vetted and recently had 12 teeth removed—but his appetite hasn’t missed a beat! A little warm water in his kibble does the trick. Kojo is affectionate and loves being close to his people (especially snuggling in bed!), but he’ll need a patient, consistent home to help him continue building confidence. He can be shy and barky around unfamiliar people, dogs and sounds, and he’s still working on potty training. A predictable routine and belly band help him succeed. He can be crated for short periods and has been left alone for about 3 hours. Kojo can also be a little escape artist, so extra care around open doors is important! Most of all, Kojo needs someone who understands that he’s been through a lot of change and is willing to give him the time and security he needs to settle in.

Overview:
The Dachshund, affectionately known as the "wiener dog," is a fascinating breed originating in Germany, primarily bred to hunt badgers and other burrowing animals. Their most distinctive physical characteristic is their long, low-slung body and short, muscular legs, a feature perfectly adapted for tunneling. They come in three coat types – smooth, longhaired, and wirehaired – and various sizes, from miniature to standard. Temperamentally, Dachshunds are known for being courageous, curious, and often quite playful, with a surprising amount of energy. While they are intelligent, their independent nature can make training a delightful challenge. Their small size and relatively low exercise requirements make them well-suited for apartment living, and they can be wonderful companions for families, though early socialization is key, especially with children and other pets. Regarding health, their unique body shape predisposes them to intervertebral disc disease (IVDD), so careful handling and weight management are crucial.
