All of our dogs are in foster homes and not in one single kennel location. Adoption events is the best way to meet several of our dogs at once. Valen is a 10 month old male Shepherd mix weighing approximately 70 pounds. He was initially adopted from our organization as a young puppy, but he found his way back due to unexpected family circumstances. Since he reunited with us, Valen has made it clear that his needs are very simple. He is extremely content with a quiet home, a playful dog mate, and a human companion that he can call his own. In his current foster home, Valen has settled in very well and has welcomed numerous foster mates. Although he takes his time to get to know each new sibling, he eventually engages each one with his puppy-frolic, play bows, and games of chase. He can be occasionally enthusiastic in his play style, so supervision and guidance will be helpful as he learns to engage with mutual energy. He shares his space well with his foster companions, including rides in the back of the vehicle, resting on large dog beds, or playing tug of war with a rope toy. Valen also, however, does well as a solo dog where he will seek play with his people for entertainment. He will not complain if he has to wait patiently alone at home while you are away. Valen enjoys short walks in the neighborhood where he prefers to ignore other company along the way. If you don’t have time for a walk, he’s fine with that too. When it comes to canine social gatherings, he may take a few minutes adapting to strange pack members before he participates in group fun. Once he does, it’s as if he’s among old friends. If he only has one friend in his life, he’ll be quite content with that too. Valen also finds crowds of people to be over-stimulating and will prefer to keep to himself or, better yet, go back to his familiar home. Because of this, meet and greets with interested adopters will be offered privately where Valen can display his best self. Valen is very food-motivated (especially carrots) and waits his turn with eager anticipation for treats and meals. At bedtime, he’s the first to enter his crate where he sleeps quietly through the night. He is housebroken and routinely uses a dog door. If you are seeking a dog companion that enjoys his simple home without asking for more, Valen will be your forever grateful boy. Overview:
The German Shepherd Dog, a truly iconic breed, originated in Germany in the late 19th century, primarily for herding sheep. They are easily recognizable by their athletic, medium-to-large build, typically weighing between 50-90 pounds, with a distinct double coat that can be black and tan, sable, or solid black. Known for their intelligence and loyalty, German Shepherds possess a remarkably trainable and courageous temperament, making them exceptional working dogs in fields like police and service work. While generally good with families when properly socialized, their high energy levels and need for mental stimulation make them unsuitable for apartment living without significant daily exercise. Prospective owners should be aware of common health concerns such as hip and elbow dysplasia, as well as degenerative myelopathy, underscoring the importance of responsible breeding and regular veterinary care.
