Description

Dog Breed: German Shepherd Dog (medium coat). His Best Days Are Still Ahead Meet Ernie—A Sweet Boy Finding His Confidence When Ernie first arrived at the shelter, the world felt like a very scary place. He struggled to walk on leash and was overwhelmed by everything around him. But day by day, this sweet boy is blossoming, and it's wonderful to watch his playful personality emerge. Ernie starts his outings a little anxious and can be erratic on leash at first. Give him some time to run, explore, and let those pent-up feelings out in the yard, and you'll see a big difference. His leash skills improve considerably once he's had a chance to decompress, though he'll still need patient guidance and continued training as he learns. Ernie loves splashing in the pool, enjoys treats and affection, and has discovered that playtime with other dogs is pretty great, too. He's also made tremendous progress with his skin. After needing medicated baths when he arrived, his skin has improved dramatically, and he now tolerates bath time much better. Ernie has already come so far both physically and mentally. He just needs someone willing to keep believing in him, give him time to learn, and show him that the world can be a wonderful place. This sweet boy has participated in shelter playgroups and may enjoy a compatible canine friend in his new home. Looking for a buddy for your dog? Bring him/her to the shelter for a meet and greet and see if we're a match! Check out his playgroup video here: To meet me, visit the Bradshaw Animal Shelter Tuesday-Sunday, Noon - 5:00 pm, Wednesdays, Noon - 6:00 pm. All adoptions are on a first-come, first-served basis. German Shepherd Dog

A.K.A.: Alsatian, Alsatian Wolf Dog, Shepherd Dog, GSD, Deutscher Schäferhund, Schäferhund, Berger Allemand, Pastore Tedesco, Perro de Pastor Alemán, Alsatian Dog
Overview:

The German Shepherd Dog, a truly iconic breed, originated in Germany in the late 19th century, primarily for herding sheep. They are easily recognizable by their athletic, medium-to-large build, typically weighing between 50-90 pounds, with a distinct double coat that can be black and tan, sable, or solid black. Known for their intelligence and loyalty, German Shepherds possess a remarkably trainable and courageous temperament, making them exceptional working dogs in fields like police and service work. While generally good with families when properly socialized, their high energy levels and need for mental stimulation make them unsuitable for apartment living without significant daily exercise. Prospective owners should be aware of common health concerns such as hip and elbow dysplasia, as well as degenerative myelopathy, underscoring the importance of responsible breeding and regular veterinary care.
