Description
Dog Breed: Shih Tzu. PLEASE NOTE! Unless stated otherwise, our dogs and puppies are located in Arkansas, and transported to the north/northeast once adopted. We do occasionally have dogs/puppies placed in foster homes in the north/northeast. In the cases where the pet is somewhere other than Arkansas, it will be noted beside the name of the pet. Sugar is a cute little Shih Tzu who had a very hard past. Her mama died in January. From Jan thru April, Sugar was alone in her house, with only a family member coming by every day or two to feed her. By the time we got her in April, she was severely matted and pretty scared of everyone. She has been in a foster home since then and has been groomed twice. The first time was just to remove the mats from her, which left huge bald, raw skin that needed time to heal and regrow hair. Now that's done and she is looking so much better! But more than that, she needed time to heal emotionally. Sugar is a quirky little girl who likes things on her terms. She LOVES to cuddle and will paw at you to keep petting her. More than anything else, she LOVES to play fetch. She will fetch from the time she wakes up until she goes to bed if someone will keep throwing the toy for her. Her foster has to hide the toy from her and tell her "it's put up now, no more" and then she will usually settle down. Sugar does ok with most dogs, but if the other dog is submissive she tries to pick on them. She is very protective of her bed and will growl at other dogs or cats if they try to get on "her" bed. She also likes to show off her toughness with stuffy toys and will shake them until they fall apart. She is great with the little boy in her foster home. She doesn't like being picked up much, but once she is bonded to you, she will allow it. Once she knows she is safe with you, she will ask to be picked up by standing on her back legs and reaching up like a toddler asking for "uppies." She needs a patient and loving adopter who will put some time into bonding with her and getting to know all of her quirks. She does need a little help with house training as well. She sleeps in the bed with her fosters and enjoys that cuddle time immensely. Sugar is a special girl who is a lot of fun and has a lot of love to give to the right adopter. She is about 10 lbs and we estimate her to be about 6 years old. She has made great strides in her foster home in the past few months. She is ready to find her forever family who will love her as much as her foster family does. Sugar is located in Arkansas. She can be adopted locally, but transport is available to the New England area as well. Adopter must be able to pick up or arrange for someone to pick up for them in PA, NJ, or CT on Saturdays. To apply, please fill out the adoption app: form.jotform/212690945239059 email apps.aasrgmail with any questions. Our typical adoption fee for puppies younger than 6 months old is $400, and for older puppies and adults, the usual fee is $350. This includes microchip, spay/neuter, up to date on age appropriate vaccinations, dewormings, flea/tick treatment, and heartworm test (if over 6 months old) as well as heartworm treatment if they test positive. There is a transport fee of $150 per dog, depending on the transporter. We use Pack Leaders Rescue Dog Transport most often, but also use Hearts Transport as well on occasion. Breed overview
Shih Tzu
A.K.A.: Lion Dog, Chrysanthemum Dog, Foo Dog, Xi Shi dog, Tibetan Temple Dog, Chinese Imperial Dog, Lhasa Lion Dog, Shitzu, Schipperke, Tzu, Shih Tzu Kou, Kou
Overview:
The Shih Tzu, affectionately known as the "lion dog," boasts an ancient and regal lineage, originating from the Tibetan plateau and further refined in imperial China. These charming canines are easily recognized by their striking appearance: a small, sturdy build, a distinctive undershot jaw, and a long, flowing double coat that often requires regular grooming to prevent matting. Temperamentally, Shih Tzus are renowned for being affectionate, outgoing, and playful companions, making them wonderfully suitable for a variety of households. Their adaptable and generally good-natured disposition means they often thrive in families with children and are particularly well-suited for apartment living due to their modest exercise requirements. While generally robust, potential owners should be aware of common breed-specific health concerns, including respiratory issues (due to their brachycephalic, or "smushed" face), eye conditions, and luxating patella. Despite these considerations, a Shih Tzu typically brings immense joy and companionship to their devoted owners.
