Description
Dog Breed: Beagle. Attention All Beagle Lovers Barbara is a beautiful senior girl looking for a patient and caring family who will give her the home that she deserves. She came into our rescue after living a nomadic life for several years after her owner passed away. Her behaviors indicate she was part of a family, she is friendly and happy to meet all humans. Barbara is 10 years old and wants nothing more to be your shadow and spend her days at your side. She will need someone who is very patient and willing to work with her while she continues to work on house training. This senior girl is a nice size, a little under 25 pounds and comes to life when her favorite human returns home and when adventuring outside. Barbara sleeps quietly in her crate overnight. During the day, Barbara acts like a respectable Beagle - she loves to sniff the ground and keeps track of her favorite human’s location. Barbara is respectful of both dogs and cats. While Barbara does not show much social interest in her foster siblings, she is much more confident and relaxed when they are around. She clearly enjoys being part of a pack. A confident and calm canine sibling in the house would help her to continue to adjust to being a member of the family. Barbara can walk well on a leash but some urban sounds still seem to be new to her. Barbara loves to roll in the grass and sniff the air and will be very content to sun herself while you attend to yard work. Her ideal home would give her outdoor space to explore and have a fenced in yard so that she can roll and sniff on her own terms. Barbara is still recovering from her recent nomadic period and the lack of a consistent, healthy diet. She came into rescue positive for lyme disease. And while she completed one round of antibiotics, it is recommended that she be tested again and may need a second course of antibiotics. Additionally, Barbara’s kidney levels are high and she is on medication and a diet to help regulate her bloodwork. Since coming into rescue, good food and care have brought these numbers down but her bloodwork will need to be monitored. Finally, as an older girl, her knees are sore, and while she has no trouble ambulating (good on stairs, can jump up on the couch, and has daily zoomies), she has some discomfort when squatting. She was recently placed on two medications to make her more comfortable and which has allowed her to hold a squat longer when going to the bathroom. As to house training, she is making progress but her family will need to have patience to continue to work with her as she does not yet indicate when she needs go outside. In addition to a like-minded canine sibling and a fenced in yard, Barbara’s ideal adoptive family will include at least one human who is at home more often than not and is ready to provide and receive the affection that this loveable “Velcro” dog offers. Can you provide the home that Barbara needs and deserves for her senior years? Barbara is available now through Paws Across Pittsburgh, Springdale, PA 15144, KL#16182.

Overview:
The Beagle is a beloved scent hound with a rich history, originally bred in England for hunting hare and rabbit. Their most recognizable physical traits include a sturdy, compact build, adorable floppy ears, and soulful brown or hazel eyes. Beagles typically weigh between 18-30 pounds and stand 13-16 inches tall, featuring a smooth, dense coat that comes in a variety of tri-color or bi-color patterns. In terms of temperament, they are known for being exceptionally friendly, curious, and outgoing, making them wonderful companions for families with children and other pets. However, their strong prey drive and inclination to follow interesting scents mean they require a securely fenced yard and consistent leash training. While adaptable, their need for exercise and tendency to vocalize (howl!) makes them less ideal for small apartment living unless daily walks and mental stimulation are guaranteed. Regarding health, Beagles can be prone to certain conditions like hip dysplasia, epilepsy, and intervertebral disc disease, making responsible breeding and regular veterinary check-ups important.
