Description
Dog Breed: Chihuahua (medium coat). Some dogs are naturally timid or shy, while others may not have learned to trust people while they were young. These dogs need to feel safe before they will interact with people; the work to build a relationship of trust could be a long and hard one but the experience can be one of the most rewarding of dog ownership. Chicken Little Dogs: are fearful of new people and places, take time to trust, shut down here at the shelter, and will bite if people push or try to interact too quickly. However, once they trust a person, they often become very bonded. OTHER PETS: Sally met another dog appropriately but did not continue any further attempts to interacthe She also became nervous and cowered when near loud dogs. We believe Sally would do best as an only dog, but she may grow to trust a relaxed, well-socialized dog who allows her the space she needed to settle in. [Case by Case (Must Meet First)] OWNER EXPERIENCE: Experience with positive reinforcement or willing to learn. Sally's best fit would be with someone who will provide ample time to decompress and feel safe in a new environment and people, and allow Sally set the pace for interactions. Previous experience with nervous/shut down dogs is ideal. [Some Experience] KIDS: High pitched noises, flailing hands, and sudden movements will scare Sally; she is also scared by loud voices and loud noises. An older child able to provide respect and space around Sally would be her best fit. Minors and children should be actively supervised to be sure everyone is safe and comfortable. [13+ / dog savvy (Must Meet First)] ACTIVITY LEVEL: Once Sally felt safe enough with staff to let us leash her and take her outside, she was independently exploring the outdoor runs but showing no interest in toys. Once she has the time to decompress in a home she may develop more enthusiasm around toys and become more playful once she feels safe. A combination of regular exercise and plenty of mental enrichment such as sniffing, food puzzles, and learning new tricks, will help fully meet her needs. Sally loves tasty treats and has been very gentle accepting them from a trusted person. [Good Walking Buddy] VETERINARY CARE: [Routine] GROOMING: Regular brushing will help keep Sallyâs coat clean and matt-free between grooms. [Regular Brushing] LEVEL OF TRAINING NEEDED: Positive reinforcement will help Sally develop a strong bond with her new owner while learning new skills and fun tricks, and building confidence. Overview:
The Chihuahua, a captivating breed known for its diminutive size, boasts an ancient and somewhat mysterious origin, with most theories pointing to Mexico as its birthplace, potentially descending from the "Techichi," a small companion dog of the Toltec civilization. Physically, they are easily recognizable by their small, compact bodies, large expressive eyes, and erect ears, appearing in both smooth and long-coated varieties, showcasing a vast array of colors and markings. Despite their tiny stature, Chihuahuas possess a big personality; they are often described as spirited, alert, and fiercely loyal to their owners, sometimes displaying a bold and confident demeanor. While their small size makes them exceptionally well-suited for apartment living, they thrive in homes where they receive ample attention and mental stimulation. They can be good family pets for older children who understand how to interact gently with a small dog, but their delicate build makes them less suitable for boisterous toddlers. Regarding health, Chihuahuas can be prone to certain conditions like patellar luxation, heart problems, and dental issues, making regular veterinary check-ups crucial for their well-being.
