Description
Dog Breed: Belgian Shepherd Malinois (medium coat). Adoption Fee: $400. Meet Derek McDreamy Paging Dr. McDreamy! If you’re looking for a handsome, goofy, ridiculously sweet puppy with a heart of gold, Derek McDreamt is ready to see you now. And yes, he absolutely lives up to the name. Derek is a 5-month-old Belgian Malinois who may be one of the most perfect puppies you’ll ever meet. He currently weighs around 35 lbs and is expected to grow into a handsome 70–80 lb adult. His specialty? Making friends with absolutely everyone! Derek has the best personality and genuinely believes everyone he meets is his new best friend. He has been fantastic with other dogs and loves chasing around and playing with his foster siblings. He’s still learning proper puppy playtime etiquette, but he’s a quick learner and is doing great. Like any Malinois, Derek is an energetic boy who will need an active home. He isn’t quite as intense as your stereotypical Malinois, but he will still need plenty of exercise, training, enrichment, and things to keep that smart puppy brain busy. His ideal person will be someone who wants a dog they can have fun with and continue training as he grows. And then there’s his goofy side. Derek hasn’t quite figured out the whole “toy” concept yet, but he’s working on it. His absolute favorite activity, however, is playing in the pool! He LOVES water and could happily spend his day splashing around and chasing his friends. Despite all his puppy energy, Derek is also a total sweetheart. He loves his people and will happily come over and lay beside you when you sit down. He’s the kind of puppy who wants to be part of whatever you’re doing. He is currently working on potty training and, impressively, has not had a single accident! He is also absolutely amazing in his crate. He may whine for a little bit here and there, but he settles down shortly afterward. He even eats his meals in his crate and is learning that his crate is his safe. Because Derek is a big, energetic puppy who is going to grow into a BIG boy, we think he would probably do best with older children who are less likely to be knocked over by an enthusiastic 70+ lb teenager. Derek’s ideal home: Active and ready for an energetic dog Interested in continuing training and working with a smart puppy Someone who wants an adventure buddy AND a cuddle buddy A home willing to provide exercise, enrichment, and structure Older children would likely be the best fit Derek McDreamy is handsome, hilarious, affectionate, social, and just an all-around fantastic puppy. He has so much potential, and we can already tell he is going to grow into an incredible dog with the right family. His diagnosis? Terminally handsome with a severe case of puppy personality. If you’re looking for your very own McDreamy, Derek is accepting applications now. Apply at bit.ly/RRAdoptionApplication

Breed overview
Overview:
A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
