Dog Breed: Dachshund (short coat). Hi, everyone! My name is Shelby , and I’m a sweet 10-year-old, 11-pound chocolate-and-tan Dachshund who is new to rescue. I may be a senior girl, but I have a BIG heart and I’m happiest when I’m right beside my favorite human. I also believe treats are one of life’s greatest treasures, so if you have snacks, we’re probably going to be best friends. My foster family is helping me work on my potty manners. I’m doing my best! I know I’m supposed to potty in the yard, and I’m very proud when my humans tell me, “Good job!” But I’m still having an occasional accident in the house, so my forever family will need to be patient and continue helping me learn. I’m a very sweet, cuddly girl, and I’m a good girl about going into my kennel when my humans leave or at bedtime. I’ll be honest, though—I’m not exactly a fan of it. Sometimes I have a little bedtime protest and cry for a while before I settle down. I just really prefer being close to my people! I’m not a fan of children, so I think I’d be happiest in a home with adults and/or other doggy friends. What I really want is a loving family where I can spend my days being your little shadow, getting cuddles, enjoying treats, and soaking up all the love I deserve. Overview:
The Dachshund, affectionately known as the "wiener dog," is a fascinating breed originating in Germany, primarily bred to hunt badgers and other burrowing animals. Their most distinctive physical characteristic is their long, low-slung body and short, muscular legs, a feature perfectly adapted for tunneling. They come in three coat types – smooth, longhaired, and wirehaired – and various sizes, from miniature to standard. Temperamentally, Dachshunds are known for being courageous, curious, and often quite playful, with a surprising amount of energy. While they are intelligent, their independent nature can make training a delightful challenge. Their small size and relatively low exercise requirements make them well-suited for apartment living, and they can be wonderful companions for families, though early socialization is key, especially with children and other pets. Regarding health, their unique body shape predisposes them to intervertebral disc disease (IVDD), so careful handling and weight management are crucial.
