She was found wandering along a busy four-lane highway with her friend, Becky, both trying to survive on their own. Around her neck was a heavy chain that was much too large for her small 32-pound frame—a heartbreaking reminder that life hasn't always been kind to her. But despite her rough start, Brenda hasn't let it change her sweet spirit. This precious 1-2-year-old girl, with her adorable brown spot around one eye, is friendly with our volunteers, enjoys the company of other dogs, and is learning to walk nicely on a leash. Brenda deserves so much more than the life she's known. She deserves a family who will keep her safe, love her unconditionally, and show her what it means to be part of a family. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
