Description

Dog Breed: Border Collie (short coat). Please contact Riccwataol for more information about this pet. Meet Danny!! Danny is a 10-month-old male dog who is currently in a foster home and working on basic skills. He is getting better at fetch and dropping the ball. He is also practicing “sit” and “wait.” Danny goes on multiple walks a day and currently uses an Easy Walk harness while he continues to work on leash manners. He is intelligent, eager to please, playful, goofy, affectionate, even-tempered, a bit skittish, and housetrained. Danny has playful puppy energy and would likely enjoy having a dog buddy who can help give him more activity. In his foster home, he plays with an older doodle and can be redirected when play gets too intense. He benefits from activity, structure, and continued training. A very active senior could handle Danny as long as they are prepared for his energy and ongoing training needs. Danny can be cautious when meeting new people. In foster care, he approached a woman and wanted to be petted, but he was not ready to make contact with a man. He has not met children or cats yet. Because Danny can be enthusiastic during play, a home with medium or larger dog friends may be the best fit. The foster reports that he is not as good with their 13-pound dog because he does not yet understand that he cannot play full out with smaller animals. The foster also notes that he is intelligent and may figure this out with time, training, and supervision. Danny does well in his kennel overall. He may bark at first when left alone, but he settles down and has not been destructive. Toys and enrichment help keep him occupied. He is not afraid of water and jumps right into the wading pool. He sees geese and deer daily and still usually barks at them; he is getting acclimated, but if he is out on a walk, he wants to chase. Danny would benefit from an adopter who can continue working with him on training, exercise, and manners. We are still getting to know Danny so stay tuned for updates!! He is being fostered in Springfield, IL. Please contact riccwataol if you have questions about Danny. *** The potential adopter will get a refund on the Application Fee if it’s determined by the Foster Parent that the foster dog is not a good match for the applicant and we do not process their application.

Overview:

The Border Collie is a highly intelligent and energetic herding dog, originating from the Anglo-Scottish border region where they were bred for their exceptional sheep-gathering abilities. Physically, they are medium-sized dogs with an athletic build, typically weighing between 30-55 pounds, and feature a double coat that can be rough or smooth, appearing in a wide variety of colors, though black and white is most common. Their alert, intense gaze is a hallmark of the breed. Temperamentally, Border Collies are renowned for their incredible trainability, eagerness to please, and boundless energy, making them excellent candidates for dog sports like agility and obedience. However, this high drive means they require significant mental and physical stimulation; without proper outlets, they can become bored and destructive. While loyal and affectionate with their families, their herding instincts can sometimes translate to nipping at children or other pets if not managed, making them generally better suited for experienced owners who can dedicate time to their training and exercise needs. They are definitely not suited for apartment living and thrive in homes with large, secure yards and active lifestyles. Health-wise, they are generally robust, but can be prone to certain genetic conditions such as Collie Eye Anomaly (CEA), hip and elbow dysplasia, and Trapped Neutrophil Syndrome (TNS).
