Description
Dog Breed: Chihuahua (long coat). Adoption Fee: 400. Thanks for your interest in a pet from A.R.F.! If you see a pet here, they are still available for adoption and you should apply through our adoption application on our website at .arf-il/adopt/application/ Lucy is a 5 year old female long haired Chihuahua who weighs in at 13.6 pounds. This dog's adoption fee is $400. If you are still interested, please read more below. Lucy is a very sweet and spunky girl who is a bit nervous in new places/situations but warms up fairly quickly with reassurance, patience, and time. She loves to play with her toys and, while she can be energetic and silly, she also loves to curl up near you on the couch for a long nap. She is great at self-entertaining while her foster works from home and will happily play with her toys, watch out the window, or nap close by in her crate (by choice). She is absolutely adorable and will get very wiggly and smiley if you hype her up by tell her what a good girl she is. Lucy appears to be fully housebroken (she has only had one accident so far and it was within the first 24 hours). She hasn't tried to get into anything she shouldn't and isn't destructive. She is crate trained and is calm and quiet in her crate, often choosing to nap there with the door open during the day. She also sleeps all night in her crate but would likely love to sleep with her person/people. She is friendly with dogs and greets them appropriately. We have been told that she is good with kids and cats though she hasn't interacted with either in her foster home. Lucy is still working on leash walking as she is a little nervous outside sometimes. She prefers to do her business and head back into the house. Lucy would do well with other pets or as an only dog. Very young children who haven't been exposed to small dogs may be a bit much for her to live with but we believe she would fit into most households as long as her family is willing to take things at her pace while building her confidence to make her feel comfortable and safe. She seems very adaptable and has picked up on her foster’s routine very quickly. If you're looking for a sweet dog who will make you laugh and be your little sidekick, Lucy is your girl! Lucy is microchipped, up to date on all vaccinations, housebroken, and spayed. This dog's family will be required to complete a basic obedience course of their choosing. A meeting will not be scheduled until you have an approved application, so if you are interested in adopting this dog, fill out an Online Application today! Once your application has been approved, an ARF volunteer will contact you to arrange a meeting. Thank you for considering a rescue pet from A.R.F.-Animal Rescue Foundation! We are based in Wheaton, IL and conduct adoption events in the DuPage County area. If you are interested in adopting one of our pets, please submit an adoption application at .arf-il/adopt/application/ Adoption appointments are scheduled based on the order of applications received, so submit your application early! Submitting an application does not commit you to any animal but does get you a head start with the adoption approval process. Due to a high volume of applications, we are often unable to respond to questions or schedule meetings until your application has been approved. More information about our adoption process can be found on our website here: .arf-il/adopt/ As an all-volunteer, foster home-based organization, A.R.F. Animal Rescue Foundation does not have a facility where applicants can visit our animals. Please visit .arf-il/events/ for a list of our upcoming adoption events. Thank you for choosing to adopt, not shop!

Overview:
The Chihuahua, a captivating breed known for its diminutive size, boasts an ancient and somewhat mysterious origin, with most theories pointing to Mexico as its birthplace, potentially descending from the "Techichi," a small companion dog of the Toltec civilization. Physically, they are easily recognizable by their small, compact bodies, large expressive eyes, and erect ears, appearing in both smooth and long-coated varieties, showcasing a vast array of colors and markings. Despite their tiny stature, Chihuahuas possess a big personality; they are often described as spirited, alert, and fiercely loyal to their owners, sometimes displaying a bold and confident demeanor. While their small size makes them exceptionally well-suited for apartment living, they thrive in homes where they receive ample attention and mental stimulation. They can be good family pets for older children who understand how to interact gently with a small dog, but their delicate build makes them less suitable for boisterous toddlers. Regarding health, Chihuahuas can be prone to certain conditions like patellar luxation, heart problems, and dental issues, making regular veterinary check-ups crucial for their well-being.
