Description
Dog Breed: Plott Hound (medium coat). MEET LIONEL Lionel would do best in a very active teen / adult only home, he is very high energy but sometimes does not know when to take breaks and would need a more structured routine! He would enjoy creative ways to get his energy out like long hikes/runs, lots of play time with breaks in-between, and possibly dog sports if you were interested in that route! Examples could be agility or dock diving, although he would likely need to work on his routine and basic training before attempting this if it's something you are looking for. He can be mouthy / jumpy while playing and will need some help working on his manners and is very food motivated , loves to play, and is doing well with and enjoys positive reinforcement training. Lionel can be dog selective so slow introductions to other dogs are important. Lionel is currently up to date on all vaccinations, has been neutered, microchipped and seen by our vet team. We welcome adopters from NH, RI, CT, and NY however, we are unable to facilitate same day adoptions due to state regulated paperwork requirements. Overview:
The Plott Hound is a rugged, intelligent breed originating from the mountains of North Carolina, primarily bred for hunting large game like bear and wild boar. Known for their striking brindle coat, which can range from light tan to dark black, they are a medium-to-large dog with a muscular build, powerful legs, and a distinctive deep, resonant bay. Temperamentally, Plotts are loyal, courageous, and generally good-natured, displaying an affectionate side with their families. While they can be excellent companions for active families, their high energy levels and strong prey drive mean they require considerable exercise and secure containment. They are generally not well-suited for apartment living due to their need for space and propensity to vocalize. Health-wise, Plotts are a relatively hardy breed, though like many large dogs, they can be prone to hip and elbow dysplasia, bloat, and eye conditions. Regular veterinary check-ups and a balanced diet are crucial for maintaining their well-being.
