Description
Dog Breed: Border Terrier (medium coat). Meet Gwen, the Border Terrier! Gwen arrived to the Shelter with her sister âGitaâ as strays, so we donât know much about her life before now. Staff have observed that Gwen has slowly blossomed into an affectionate and amiable gal since her arrival to the Shelter. She is still gaining confidence and finds some things overwhelming so adopters should be patient with her as she transitions to her new life. She has met dogs her size (and larger) and has done well. Dogs that are very forward and energetic may be a bit much so a slow, thoughtful introduction is recommended. We do not have any history of Gwen with cats or children. Gwen is available for pre-adoption. Come meet her, fall in love and take her home after her spay surgery. The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Foundation is now offering âPawsitivity Bucksâ with every dog adoption. This $200 training voucher is a way for newly adopted canines and their guardians to connect with local positive reinforcement based behavior consultants and get their relationship started off on the right paw! Please note: Our Santa Cruz locationâs Shelter hours are 11-6pm, 7 days a week! Although clients can walk through and see any animals in their kennels during open hours, we end âmeet and greetsâ (aka meeting an animal out of the kennel) at 4:30pm every day. If youâd like to meet an animal out of the kennel, please arrive before 4:00pm to allow for time to discuss individual animals and meet them.

Breed overview
Border Terrier
A.K.A.: Coquetdale Terrier, Reedwater Terrier, Roxburghshire Terrier, Border, Borders, BW.
Overview:
The Border Terrier, originating from the Anglo-Scottish border region, was bred to work alongside huntsmen, bolting foxes and other vermin. This small, hardy terrier possesses a distinctive "otter-like" head, a wiry, dense coat that provides excellent weather protection, and a lean, muscular build. Typically weighing between 11-15 pounds, they are incredibly agile and possess surprising stamina. Known for their alert and affectionate temperament, Border Terriers are generally good-natured and can be wonderful family pets, often getting along well with children and other animals when properly socialized. While adaptable, their natural inclination to dig and chase means secure fencing is essential. They can thrive in apartments if given sufficient daily exercise and mental stimulation. Health-wise, they are generally robust, but like many breeds, can be prone to certain conditions such as Canine Epileptoid Cramping Syndrome (CECS) and luxating patellas, making responsible breeding practices crucial.
