The Catahoula Leopard Dog is a striking and intelligent breed, originating in the southern United States, particularly Louisiana, where they were bred as versatile working dogs. Their most distinctive physical feature is their "leopard" spotted coat, which comes in a stunning array of colors and patterns, often accompanied by captivating "cracked" or "glass" eyes. These medium-to-large dogs possess a strong, muscular build, reflecting their heritage as agile hunters and herders. Temperamentally, Catahoulas are known for being independent, alert, and protective, yet also deeply loyal to their families. They thrive on having a "job" to do and require significant mental and physical stimulation, making them unsuitable for apartment living and best suited for active families with experience handling strong-willed dogs. While generally healthy, potential owners should be aware of a predisposition to deafness (especially in dogs with excessive white markings) and hip dysplasia.
