Description

Dog Breed: Siberian Husky (medium coat). Meet Okami (pronounced oh-kah-me) Okami lives up to his Japanese name sake as it symbolizes courage, loyalty, strength and guardianship! Though he's not a 'wolf' and does not have any of the wolf tendency's he does have a great spirit which we love about him. Okami is a year and a half and is going through the adolescence stage in life. He will need some help with the basics such as crate training and basic manners. He's extremely eager to learn and when he looks up at you with those two different colored eyes you will instantly fall in love! Okami doesn't share well with other dogs so he will have to be the only dog in the home but he can enjoy playdates with other dogs with proper monitoring. He enjoys all activities like hiking or neighborhood walks and car rides. He's friendly with all people - greeting them exuberantly. If he sounds like the dog you have been waiting for then please come to our Boston location meet him - he's not a fan of the shelter so the sooner you get here the sooner he can be free to add some excitement to your home! My friends describe me as: Adventurous, playful and affectionate Okami is currently up to date on all vaccinations, has been spayed/neutered, microchipped and seen by our vet team. We welcome adopters from NH, RI, CT, and NY however, we are unable to facilitate same day adoptions due to state regulated paperwork requirements. Siberian Husky

A.K.A.: Husky, Arctic Husky, Chukcha, Chukchi, Chukchi Sled Dog, Sibe, Sibes, Sled Dog, Snow Dog
Overview:

The Siberian Husky is a striking and beloved breed, originating from Northeast Asia where they were bred by the Chukchi people for pulling sleds over long distances in harsh conditions. Physically, they are easily recognizable by their medium size, thick double coat (available in various colors and markings), and often captivating blue or bi-colored eyes. Their temperament is typically friendly, outgoing, and playful, making them generally good with children and other dogs. However, their independent and sometimes stubborn nature, coupled with a strong prey drive, means consistent training and secure containment are essential. While affectionate, their high energy levels and need for significant exercise make them less suitable for sedentary lifestyles or tiny apartments; a house with a securely fenced yard is often preferred. Health-wise, they are generally robust but can be prone to certain conditions like hip and elbow dysplasia and eye problems such as cataracts and progressive retinal atrophy. Overall, a Siberian Husky thrives with active families committed to meeting their exercise and mental stimulation needs.
