Dog Breed: Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed. Adoption Fee: 500. Meet Maribel! Maribel is a sweet and gentle little girl who is looking for someone to show her that life can be filled with love, comfort, and security. Maribel is a 1–2-year-old female, weighs 34 pounds, and is heartworm negative. She and her sister, Mattison, were found roaming together in a nice neighborhood. Sadly, it appears they may have been dropped off, and no one has come forward to claim them. When Maribel first arrived, she was understandably timid and frightened, but with a few days of patience and gentle encouragement from our volunteers, Maribel is beginning to come out of her shell. She is starting to venture out on a leash and is learning that going for walks can be a pretty wonderful thing! She is very sweet and gentle and absolutely loves sitting quietly while she gets petted. Maribel doesn't need much — just a patient family willing to give her a little time to feel safe and learn to trust. Once she knows she is loved, we believe this gentle girl will blossom into a wonderful companion. Maribel is dog and cat approved! A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
