Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier / Labrador Retriever / Mixed (short coat). Saved on my last Week of Life! Jenna was born about January 27, 2013 and weighs about 55 lbs. Jenna has a playful spirit and is very athletic. She can play fetch all day so get your throwing arm ready. She has a very fun and energetic personality. Jenna needs an active family and large yard with running room to keep her happy. She has a very strong prey drive and can jump a 4 foot fence so a 6 foot secure fence will be necessary. She is very eager to please, responsive & food motivated. She received some initial obedience training at Canine Academy in Clarence giving her a great head start and we would love for her new parents to continue her obedience lessons to continue to work with her. Along with her eagerness comes a bit of lack of impulse control so continued obedience training will be very good for her. She arrived to Joyful Rescues from a high kill southern shelter and unfortunately appears to not have gotten a good upbringing in her formative years. Jenna will need to be the only pet in the house as she can be selective about who she likes and is resource protective around other dogs. Patience and tolerance at her new home will be important. If a barking dog bothers you then Jenna will not be a good fit. She has a bit of lack of impulse control so continued obedience training will be very good for her. She is quite wiggly and may knock smaller kids down, so a home with older kids would be better. She is initially a little nervous around new people and will submissive urinate, but is very affectionate once she has a bit of warm up time. The Adoption Fee for this dog is $75.00. Adoptions fees vary based on adoptability. In general our fees include spay/neuter, all age appropriate vaccines, Home Again micro-chipping & registration, worming & flea control - a "complete" pet. Joyful Rescues has no funding except for our adoption fees and miscellaneous donations. Pet care and vet bills are expensive - you must be ready to take on this financial (as well as emotional) responsibility. YOU MUST BE AT LEAST 25 YEARS OF AGE TO ADOPT A DOG FROM JOYFUL RESCUES We keep our pet list as up-to-date as possible. As soon as a pet is adopted, it is removed from the list. If a pet is still showing, it is still available for adoption. Before you seek to adopt a pet from Joyful Rescues, please read our Pet Adoption page http://www.joyfulrescues.org/pet_adoption.html. If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: Miniature Pinscher (short coat). I Win Sweetest Ever! Brody was born about May 28, 2009 and weighs about 15 lbs. He is the NICEST Min Pin ever to walk through our doors. He adores his humans and will follow you everywhere. He's fabulous with the other dogs and he's was with very young children and did great. He loves a nice lap to relax in and he loves going for car rides. He was adopted by a young man for his father and when the father passed away the son couldn't keep Brody as he rented an apartment that didn't allow pets. So, Brody got to come stay with us for awhile and we sure fell head over heals quickly - you will too! We do want to warn that these tiny dogs sometimes struggle with house training throughout their lives and may well benefit from having a potty floor pad handy when they just can't hold it any longer. Small dogs are not just shrunken big dogs, they have their own quirks. Brody has a persistent cough which may be caused by a collapsing trachea or a heart issue. If you are interested in adopting Brody, please be sure you are willing to work with these potential issues. The Adoption Fee for this dog is $250.00. Adoptions fees vary based on adoptability. In general our fees include spay/neuter, all age appropriate vaccines, Home Again micro-chipping & registration, worming & flea control - a "complete" pet. We accept CASH or Visa/Mastercard ONLY. Joyful Rescues has no funding except for our adoption fees and miscellaneous donations. Posted Breed: Pointer / Mixed (short coat). Thank you Manzella Family & 123 Shoes! The Manzella's, owners of 123 Shoes located in Country Club Plaza, Fairport Road, East Rochester, have sponsored several transports and held Customer Appreciation Days to benefit Joyful Rescues. Sixteen new "Manzella" dogs are the most recent lives they have saved. We are extremely grateful to have the Manzella's and the staff of 123 Shoes as such strong supporters! Michelle was born about January 13, 2016 and weighs about 55 lbs. She is sure one of my favorites and I rather enjoy the Pointer breed. She is just wonderful with all the other dogs and she is openly friendly and moved right in like she'd always lived here. Someone that loves the breed is sure going to be smitten by this beauty! She is one really sweet, loving, girl that is not an alpha to other dogs and she would truly benefit from having another fun dog in her next home along with a safe place in which to run and play as she has significant energy so typical to the breed. When the play is done there is no better place than your lap! Again, if you love the breed, you will LOVE this girl. The Adoption Fee for this dog is $350.00. Location: USA
Posted Breed: Shepherd / Labrador Retriever / Mixed (short coat). I Am One of the Max Collection! Joyful Rescues has welcomed 28 dogs and 3 cats all to be known as the "MAX" collection, from a kill shelter in Tennessee thanks to a generous donation sponsoring the transport by MICHELLE ALESSI of Amherst, NY. Michelle chose the name in honor of her dearly departed dog, Max who Michelle referred to as "a crusty marshmallow" a little grumpy, but a sweet mush on the inside! Still, he was dearly loved by Michelle and her late mother who now keeps watch, with Max, over Michelle and her dogs, Cleo and special needs, Gizzie. Michelle has a deep compassion for animals, especially those who are in their senior years, handicapped, or special needs. Her one request in sponsoring this transport was that we would pull at least one animal who seemed a bit of an "underdog"; so Katie pulled two! One is a dog with a deformed leg; the other a tri-pod cat with an abnormal eye. Thank you, Michelle, for helping us save so many more lives! Tabitha was born about April 1, 2013 and weighs about 60 lbs. She is absolutely adorable and has been very good with all of us, but terribly shy at first. She is good with other dogs, fine in the car and on leash. This gorgeous girl has been tossed away and will be so thankful for a new home where she will be cherished! She was left at a shelter when her babies were two days old, guess she became an inconvenience. She was terrified for herself and her infants when we loaded them up to come here just a couple of days later. She was a very good Mom, surmounted the stress and kept taking care of her babies who grew to be strong and healthy and now she is looking for a new home that will love her unconditionally! It is obvious that Tabitha has not always been treated well by humans and she is terrified of being touched by new humans and she is terrified of new places. She will take much time and effort to adjust to a new life, but she is a really wonderful, loving, girl once comfortable. Due to her fears she truly must have a fenced in yard. Tabitha is too interested in cats to live with any. The Adoption Fee for this dog is $175.00. Adoptions fees vary based on adoptability. In general our fees include spay/neuter, all age appropriate vaccines, Home Again micro-chipping & registration, worming & flea control - a "complete" pet. Posted Breed: Pekingese / Mixed (medium coat). Thank You Leaton Family for Saving Us. This transport is to honor my husband, Gary Leaton. He loved old westerns, detective shows and Buddy Rich. He started playing drums when he was 5 years old and he practiced almost every day of his life. He named one of his dogs Drummer and he thought of himself as” Drummer”. So -----the DRUMMER transport. Gary loved animals and donated to numerous animal rights organizations. He always felt he should be doing more to help abused or abandoned animals. He was very hard on himself because he couldn't save them all. He rescued the dog we had together when we got married, Master, from Lollipop Farm. When we lost Master to cancer, we got Logan from Joyful Rescues. Then 6 months later we added Haley to our family. They both enriched and added so much love and joy to our lives. We didn't know that Gary would have so little time with them. Just over a year with Logan and less with Haley. The only thing he wanted to do when he was in the hospital was come home to his “children” but it wasn't to be. Gary would be so proud to know that lives were being saved because of him." ~Laura Leaton Dale was born about November 2, 2008 and weighs about 12 lbs. She can be rather picky about her four legged friends and maybe would do best with one other small aloof dog or as an only dog. She adores her humans but we do not feel she should live with small children. We have no information on why she ended up at the high kill shelter, but she was a matted mess and just covered with fleas so now that she is healing and flea free her fur is growing back in and she'll be gorgeous again one day. She is happy, funny, and just loves to be loved. Someone is going to be very happy that she made this journey! This is all we know so far and we'll all be learning as we go. We do like to warn that many of these small dogs do benefit from having floor potty pads handy for when they just can't hold it. The Adoption Fee for this dog is $200.00. Adoptions fees vary based on adoptability. In general our fees include spay/neuter, all age appropriate vaccines, Home Again micro-chipping & registration, worming & flea control - a "complete" pet. Posted Breed: Beagle / Border Collie / Mixed (short coat). Saved in Memory of Goldie - Best Dog Ever! The GOLDIE Transport just arrived at Joyful Rescues, saving 19 lives. This transport was sponsored by Mr. and Mrs. Walter Yudikaitis, parents of our staff member, Katie, in loving memory of Katie's "Best Dog Ever", Goldie. We thank them for choosing to honor Goldie with a living tribute, and hope the furry lives saved provide a bit of a silver lining to Katie's loss. Story on BUTCH and CHARLOTTE from the shelter manager : These are two pretty special dogs. They belonged to Kelli Hale who was the treasurer for our Humane Society for 20 years. She passed away suddenly, last February. She was 56 yrs old. She had 9 dogs....her husband refused to talk with me about what would happen to her beloved pets. Her 89 yr old mother ended up with the two dogs and she died this past Friday. So guess where these two dogs ended up? Yup....at our high-kill shelter. Fortunately, I recognized them. Charlotte is one of those dogs. She was a stray who was found matted and pregnant. Kelli took her home and cared for her after her babies were still-born. She has known nothing but love and comfort since Kelli found her. And now she too is in our high-kill shelter. If Joyful Rescues could help with these two...I would be very grateful! Charlotte was born about December 16, 2014 and weighs about 57 lbs. She is WONDERFUL with the other dogs and would love a confident dog or two in her next life along with a human home much of the time. Charlotte is shy of new humans (never aggressive!), but once she loves someone she LOVES someone! She follows us all over all day and there is a lot of movement here so by the end of the day she is tuckered and just wants to snuggle with you. We are still working on her jumping up, it's just that she wants to have as much of her as close to you as she can. She is a bit rough about asking for love such as whacking your arm to get your attention so probably no tender little kids or elderly in her next life. We also feel that once she has all the love she desires (we are too busy here and too many dogs to spend hours loving one dog) that her need to ask for love will diminish as she is satisfied, content, and happy in a real home with her own humans again. The Adoption Fee for this dog is $200.00. Adoptions fees vary based on adoptability. She was highly frightened of us humans, but once she saw how much her babies loved us she stopped running from us and we were able to touch her and then pet her and scratch all those favorite spots. She decided we were turning out to be pretty cool humans! Oh course in a hoarding situation there is random breeding. He is on the shy side with new humans, but never nippy. Posted Breed: Chihuahua (short coat). I Weigh a WHOLE Five Pounds! Kam was born March 22, 2005 and weighs 5 lbs. She is as cute as can be, but is a bit on the nippy side. She will need some work on house training because she came from a puppy mill where she's been popping out puppies for pet store shelves all her life. Also, Chihuahua's struggle with house training anyway and often require potty pads or maybe a litter box. She's a doll that deserves a wonderful new life if you have a little patience to send her way. Kam's foster mom says that she faithfully uses potty pads. She also LOVES other dogs and cats, and would do best with another dog. She is afraid of being on leash and is still afraid of people, but once warmed up she is a real love! Joyful Rescues has no funding except for our adoption fees and miscellaneous donations. Pet care and vet bills are expensive - you must be ready to take on this financial (as well as emotional) responsibility. The Adoption Fee for this dog is $250.00. Can't Adopt Me?
