Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier / Labrador Retriever / Mixed. Fostering in New England!! Check Out My Very First Trip to the Beach!! https://youtu.be/fvhyzVvWub4 Young-Single-Brindle Female seeks Forever Family for long walks on the beach, hikes, strolls in the park, car rides, lots of treats and belly rubs! Hi! I'm Mara! I'm a 5 year old pit bull terrier mix who is on the hunt for the love(s) of her life!! Everyone who meets me says I have an infectious smile & happy spirit. I'm attentive and loving, and ready to be your number 1! I came to PAWS from Tennessee where my southern foster took really good care of me. But Tennessee didn't have these awesome things called adoption events. New England was where it was at so I packed my bags, hitched a ride on a transport truck and headed to my good friends at John Gagnon’s Pet Resort. I boarded there for a few months where I learned some valuable basic training skills like sit, down and recall. I am currently fostering in New England with an amazing foster family. They continue to work with me on my basic training and leash skills. When I wake up in the morning I go straight to the door and patiently wait for my foster dad to grab the leash and take me out to use the bathroom. I get plenty of treats and belly rubs and I show my love and appreciation with tail wags, butt wiggles, snuggles and kisses. On weekends I like to attend adoption events in hopes to find my people. Did I mention I LOVE car rides? I also love to go to the beach or park and chase a ball or frisbee and run out some of my energy. I also love to go on hikes! I don't completely ignore bicyclists and other hikers that we find along the way! Then I go home and take a nice long nap or snuggle with my foster dad. I would probably do best as your one and only. But I am currently living with a low-key, mellow male dog who I have come to adore!! We took it real slow and now we are best friends! I am not leash or crate reactive around other dogs so can easily be out in public or happily hanging out in my crate. In fact, my foster family and visitors are so impressed with my polite behavior around my foster canine brothers and other dogs on the street. I am looking for a forever family that is energetic and will take me for walks, runs or hikes but also loves naps and snuggle time. I need a family that will be disciplined, respect my canine to canine space, keep up with my training and mentally and physically challenge me. Let’s not waste another single day because I can’t even wait to meet you! If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: Warwick, RI
Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier. Petey had a home. If you consider being tied out in the back yard as a puppy, not even a year old, having a home. With no regular attention, training, or socialization Petey was growing big and strong with no manners. At least his owner had the good sense to call K9 Savior Foundation, and ask for us to take this sweet boy, when she was afraid his high energy might knock the kids down and hurt them. At the rescue, Petey spent his first year learning from the best dog buddies he could find Jack Black & Lady Belle, both wonderful PAWS Alumni. This gorgeous guy is the sweetest, most loving pup who ever lived! He’s a clown who LOVES to swim in the pond and play with female dogs at the rescue. He’s a fabulous foster uncle for the new puppies that come into the rescue, running around showing them the ropes, and laying patiently while they crawl all over him. Petey needs to work on some house and leash manners, but he’s ready to find his forever family! He’s got a lifetime of love and slobbery kisses just waiting to share with some lucky someone! 5/4/17 Update: Petey is housebroken using a doggy door. He is calm and well behaved indoors but loves to run full speed when outside. Petey would do best in a home with a large fenced yard or as a jogging partner. We recommend Petey be crated when not supervised as he does not have experience in a home environment and has been destructive to fabric. Name: Petey the Pit bull Breed: Pitbull Terrier Sex: Male Age: 2 years old Weight: approx 65 lbs Spayed/Neutered: Yes Vaccinations: Up to date as of 3/26/2016 Heartworm: Negative as of 3/26/2016 Microchipped: Yes BASED ON OUR OBSERVATIONS: Good with Dogs: Enjoys playing with female dogs. Has not tested well with male dogs. Good with Cats: No Good with Kids: Unknown. Not recommended around small children. Adoption Donation: $200.00 IMPORTANT INFORMATION: Interested in a specific dog, please fill out an application if you are interested in a dog. The number of individual inquiries is overwhelming and we are finding it difficult to respond to each one. We cannot guarantee you will receive a timely response. Paws New England is a rescue, not a shelter, and as such we do not have our dogs housed in one location - they are in foster homes both in New England and in our southern foster homes. If you're interested in a specific dog, please complete a short online application and you will receive a reply within 48 hours so you can ask questions. At present, if a dog is listed on our website, the dog is considered still available HOWEVER, may have applications that have come in before yours but it's still too early to know if any are a good match; therefore we encourage you to apply. Sex: Female Female

      Location: Warwick, RI
Posted Breed: Pug / Boston Terrier / Mixed. Evee hasn't had an easy time in life. She arrives to PAWS from one of our New England partners after being found as a stray. She was found shivering and curled up by a trash can on a cold, rainy night. She was obviously very scared and nervous. It took a few days before she would even let anyone get near her. Volunteers read to her and fed her string cheese until they could gain her trust. It took days before anyone could even tell what gender she was! Evee is now in a Connecticut foster home and making huge strides! She can be shy upon first meeting, but once she gets to know you she is sweet! Her foster mom says she's a smart pup who continues to work on learning how to be an inside dog. She is nearly house broken and does well with a structured schedule. Quick motions can some times make her nervous. So we'd love to see her in a quiet home with a patient and loving family. She certainly enjoys her toys but is learning to share them. With consistent leadership and redirection she improves every day! Evee has done well with her canine siblings after slow and proper introductions. But she would be perfectly happy as an only dog. We think she'd do great with an experienced pet parent who can reinforce the rules and provide structure so she can blossom into the dog she was always meant to be! Posted Breed: Hound / Mixed. Jake Owen did not have an easy start in life. He was starved and tied up for about 5 years while being used to hunt wild boars. Although his history has left him with emotional scars he is persevering and starting to flourish in his foster home! He enjoys a quiet, calm environment but he loves going on walks! Lounging around on the couch and eating are some of his favorite activities. He also loves to follow his foster mom around the house, but he still avoids his foster dad. Jake has a fear of men or anyone that in his opinion is scary. Sometimes on walks he gets scared but otherwise he does well on a walk. He is a flight risk so great caution must be used around doors and gates. Jake is a very fast learner and is completely housebroken! He also is crate trained. Jake has a great hound-mix howl that he uses to express himself! Jake has been known to shred things in his environment because of anxiety. He has started to become more comfortable in his foster home and he no longer is exhibiting that behavior. He will need to have a good kennel when he first arrives at a new home to prevent him from exhibit this behavior. Jake needs a family that is willing to work with him on his fear and prepared to be very careful as he is a significant flight risk. With time Jake will blossom into an excellent dog and great companion. He has already mastered multiple commands! Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed. Dixie, and another pup, were abandoned at a house in Midtown Memphis by a college student who moved away. The people who rescued her called a friend of K9 Savior who then brought her to us and contacted PAWS. With some great veterinary care and TLC Dixie is looking and feeling great. She is a super sweetie pie who is very affectionate and loves being with people. Because of the dog attack that brought her to us, she is defensive when other dogs get to close to her face. Dixie’s amazing foster mom is continuing to work with her, but for now Dixie would probably be happiest as an only dog. Dixie keeps her toys and bedding neat. She's training on a doggy door and only rarely has potty accidents when her door is open. Dixie's favorite past time is to sit on her bed and watch what's going on around her. She is well behaved and calm when free to walk around indoors but gets very excited at meal time. Dixie has so much love to give and can’t wait to find a home to call her own! Posted Breed: Terrier / Mixed. Fostering in New England!! Abby (and Scruffy) were surrendered by their owner in March of 2015 to a dog sanctuary in Tennessee. The owner was moving and could not take the dogs with him. What a tragedy for Abby and Scruffy, who found themselves displaced out of their forever home as seniors! Very quickly, the sanctuary staff realized that the boarding situation was too overwhelming for these pups, and they were moved to a foster home in TN, where they spent several months before Paws New England was informed of their plight to travel North. They arrived in New England on January 30 to a new foster home. Abby is one of those lucky ladies that doesn’t look or act her age! While she is a senior and is very calm and laid-back for the most part, she does show initial excitement when people visit, and she makes it a point to seek out attention from adults and children. After a while, she likes to have a quiet place to rest away from the activity. A generally quiet home would suit her best. She loves to be walked daily and is very good on leash, but also loves an opportunity to occasionally run around in a fenced yard and to stretch out in the sun. Abby (after proper initial introductions) is usually good with other dogs. She would, however, prefer to be an only dog or to be adopted with Scruffy, her life-long companion. This sweet senior deserves nothing less than a fantastic home and we’re determined to find that for her!! Posted Breed: Black and Tan Coonhound / Treeing Walker Coonhound / Mixed. Fostering in New England!! Must have another friendly and confident dog in the home- no exceptions!! Channing was one of seven dogs rescued from a neglectful property in Tennessee. They grew up in a bleak backyard with no socialization, veterinary care, or human companionship. When their owners grew weary of the seven dogs, they called animal control to come and get them one by one. When Paws New England learned about this family of hounds, we simply had to get involved. We rescued all seven. Five have found their forever homes. Channing was one of the last to be rescued from the property. He spent months in boarding before moving into a New England foster home. Channing is blossoming in his foster home! His foster mom reports he's doing really well on his basic training. He's already mastered sit, go to bed and leave it. He continues to work on paw, down, come and watch me. He has learned to take treats gently and is completely house broken. Channing lives harmoniously live with his canine foster brother, Buddy, and 2 feline foster siblings! He continues to work on his confidence building, but we have big hopes for this boy! New situations or dogs can still be a little scary for him, but he's getting better every day! Channing is loves going for walks or long hikes with his foster dad. He's happiest when he gets plenty of exercise and play time! His foster mom reports that he loves walking around with his favorite stuffed animal in his mouth and it's absolutely adorable! Channing takes the lead from his friendly and confident foster brother, Buddy. We'd love to see him in a home with a friendly canine sibling to show him the ropes. In fact, this will be critical for Channing's overall longterm growth. He will need a patient and loving family who can make a commitment to providing him with the exercise his needs and the time he deserves to adjust to a new home. If you would like to be part of Channings fairy tale ending, we'd love to hear from you! Location: Warwick, RI
Posted Breed: Chihuahua. Hi, I’m Clementine, or Clem or Mamma and this is my little girl, Suzy and we are looking for our Together Forever Home! I am 9 and Suzy is 2. We used to belong to what is called a “backyard breeder”, someone who just makes their dogs just keep having puppies so they can sell them for a lot of money. But they do no take care of the dogs or love them like good breeders do. So, when I couldn’t have any more babies they decided to get rid of me. At least they brought me, and thankfully Suzy too, to the shelter where we could become PAWS New England dogs! We have been living with our foster mom since Nov 2016 and she said we have come a long way. Because we never had people that cared and loved us we were so scared when we got here, we weren’t sure what was going to happen next. Little did we know how good life was going to be from now on. We are not quite as shy as we used to be but I am still am very leery of new people and I let them know by barking and backing away from them. I’ll come around, but it might take a while. Suzy, on the other hand, now loves people! She starts out a little nervous but people just pick her up cause she’s so tiny and she starts snuggling. Our favorite things are each other, our bed with blankets, our covered crate and food, treats and more food. But we don’t get to eat tons of food because we both need to lose some weight. Our new favorite thing is snuggling with and kissing our foster mom. Things we do not like are car rides, commotion or going for walks. Our foster mom takes us out to do our business in a fenced area and then we go back in. Suzy has learned how to use the stairs but I cannot because my legs are just too short for my body, so I get carried. When we are alone, or at night, we will use the puppy pad left near us. We live with 3 other dogs and an old cat, but we don’t bother with them much. We are content to cuddle with each other in our bed most of the day. Sometimes, Suzy will play a little bit with a stuffed toy and I will chew on a marrow bone, but mostly we lay around all day. We don’t have a lot of teeth so we can’t eat a lot of things we’d like to, but we love, love bully sticks! And I don’t see very well anymore because I have cataracts, but I’m ok with that. I also need drops in one eye, but my foster mom can tell you about that- it is no big deal! The kind of home our foster mom says will be best for us is one with only adults because I can’t see well and Suzy is too tiny; a fenced yard so we can safely go out to potty and won’t be able to get away and get lost; where someone is home a lot to give us cuddles. We just want a quiet home. We don’t want to go for car rides or visiting. So, if you have a home like this and want both of us, cause we go together, and don’t care that we are rather boring but loving, fill out an application today. If you want to talk to our foster mom you can email her at efodo57@charter.net Thanks for reading about us!! Location: Warwick, RI
Posted Breed: Basset Hound. Meet our special needs tri-paw basset hound Sadie. When our rescue partner Low Down Hound in Little Rock Arkansas found her, she was in very poor condition and badly injured as a result of a car accident several months earlier. She had severe wounds that were infected, and she was very under socialized. She spent weeks at the hospital and then weeks more lying in what seemed to be a deep depression. Her original owner was found, and he confirmed she had never had any vetting. Sadie moved to a local foster home and improved. She has been spayed, had her teeth cleaned as well as had all shots. She had many problems with her non-functional left front leg, so it was necessary to have it amputated. Sadie has completed HW treatment and doing well. She is 8 years old, but those years have not have been easy ones for her. She is fine with dogs and cats, but does not interact much, as she prefers people. Sadie prefers men over women. She is shy and likes to sleep on the bed if there are pet steps or she can be helped up. She is house trained but does have an occasional accident. She hops around pretty well and can manage a step or two up and down. She would benefit from losing a few pounds for the health of her remaining front leg. She is a very quiet girl but will play a little. We think Sadie would do best in a quiet home with primarily adult occupants. BASIC INFO: Name: Sadie Jo Sex: Female Breed: Basset Hound Age: 8 years old Weight: 50 pounds Spayed/Neutered: Yes Vaccinations: Up to date Heartworm: Positive, but completed treatment in January 2017 Microchipped: Will be before adoption BASED ON OUR OBSERVATIONS: Dogs: Yes, has lived with other dogs. Cats: Yes, has lived with cats Kids: Unknown, but should be fine with gentle children who visit.
