Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier / Labrador Retriever / Mixed. Fostering in New England!! Check Out My Very First Trip to the Beach!! https://youtu.be/fvhyzVvWub4 Young-Single-Brindle Female seeks Forever Family for long walks on the beach, hikes, strolls in the park, car rides, lots of treats and belly rubs! Hi! I'm Mara! I'm a 5 year old pit bull terrier mix who is on the hunt for the love(s) of her life!! Everyone who meets me says I have an infectious smile & happy spirit. I'm attentive and loving, and ready to be your number 1! I came to PAWS from Tennessee where my southern foster took really good care of me. But Tennessee didn't have these awesome things called adoption events. New England was where it was at so I packed my bags, hitched a ride on a transport truck and headed to my good friends at John Gagnon’s Pet Resort. I boarded there for a few months where I learned some valuable basic training skills like sit, down and recall. I am currently fostering in New England with an amazing foster family. They continue to work with me on my basic training and leash skills. When I wake up in the morning I go straight to the door and patiently wait for my foster dad to grab the leash and take me out to use the bathroom. I get plenty of treats and belly rubs and I show my love and appreciation with tail wags, butt wiggles, snuggles and kisses. On weekends I like to attend adoption events in hopes to find my people. Did I mention I LOVE car rides? I also love to go to the beach or park and chase a ball or frisbee and run out some of my energy. I also love to go on hikes! I don't completely ignore bicyclists and other hikers that we find along the way! Then I go home and take a nice long nap or snuggle with my foster dad. I would probably do best as your one and only. But I am currently living with a low-key, mellow male dog who I have come to adore!! We took it real slow and now we are best friends! I am not leash or crate reactive around other dogs so can easily be out in public or happily hanging out in my crate. In fact, my foster family and visitors are so impressed with my polite behavior around my foster canine brothers and other dogs on the street. I am looking for a forever family that is energetic and will take me for walks, runs or hikes but also loves naps and snuggle time. I need a family that will be disciplined, respect my canine to canine space, keep up with my training and mentally and physically challenge me. Let’s not waste another single day because I can’t even wait to meet you! If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: Hound / Labrador Retriever / Mixed. Send inquiries to mchen.pawsne@gmail.com Update 12/12/16 Ginger Shadow continues to make tremendous progress in his foster home!! In the past few weeks Ginger Shadow realized that hanging out with the family and canine brothers way more fun than being in his room upstairs. He's often found hanging out on the living room rug with his brother or sorting through a collection of toys. He's even been showing off his toy chewing skills to his mom too. When his foster parents come home, he rushes down the stairs to welcome them with tail wags and play bows. The whole family is just in love with this sweet boy! When our friends at Operation Pets Alive asked for our help with a shy boy named Shadow, we did not hesitate for a moment to say yes. Shadow embodies everything we hold dear as an organization and our commitment to never leave the special ones behind. Spending nearly his entire life on a farm, Shadow had little socialization. Luckily, an amazing foster family in Texas saw his true potential and took Shadow into their home. He spent 6 months learning to trust people and all the basics of being a loved, inside family dog. Shadow has been looked over time and time again due to his shyness. So when one of our amazing Northern foster families volunteered to take him into their home we were elated! Thanks to the amazing folks at Hank’s Flights, Shadow and his foster dad were able to travel to New England first class to his new foster family, who was eagerly awaiting his arrival! It’s now been over 1 month since Shadow arrived and we’ve come to realize that this boy is some kind of special. His foster family has been trying to find the right words to describe him and perhaps those words don’t exist, but they’re certainly going to give it a try! Here’s what his NE foster parents have to say: “Shadow is a sweet, gentle soul who doesn’t have a mean bone in his body. Shadow’s social skills with other dogs are impeccable. He’s been the easiest dog by far to integrate into our dog pack and and home. Over the last month, Shadow’s settled in nicely and starting to show his true playful side. The transformation has really been incredible to say the least. Shadow’s initial instinct was always to pancake to the ground or hide in a closet or crate whenever he heard an unfamiliar sound. Now, Shadow greets us every day by the door when we come home. Shadow explores the house, runs around the yard, chews on antlers, and plays with his canine foster brother nightly. He now seeks our attention to play or scratch him. Sometimes he quietly sneaks into our bed while we’re sleeping and snuggles up to us. Shadow knows the commands come, sit, outside, and bedtime. He’s very well behaved in the house and can be left out of his crate while his foster parents work 9-5. Shadow is housetrained, cratetrained and doesn’t give any trouble during baths or nail clippings. He is looking for a home on a quiet street and a fenced yard. Shadow is a true treasure and we know he will make a family very happy someday.” Check out my awesome videos! youtu.be/0IJOaBkEHuU youtu.be/OrO5m8wY6oQ Name: Ginger Shadow Sex: Male Breed: Carolina Dog/Labrador Mix (best guess) Age: 3 years as of 6/5/16 Weight: 62 pounds as of 9/2016 Spayed/Neutered: Yes Vaccinations: Up to date as of 6/5/16 Heartworm: Negative, on preventative Microchipped: Yes BASED ON OUR OBSERVATIONS Good with Dogs: Yes- currently fostering with dogs and needs a canine sibling to build his confidence. Despite everything that Babs has been through- she greets every person with a wagging tail and a wiggly butt. You'd never know that she once lived a life of abuse and neglect. Those days are behind her, and thanks to our friends at Happy K9 in Somerville, MA, and PAWS New England, Babs is onto bigger and better things!! Babs is a gorgeous pocket pittie at just 45 pounds. She absolutely loves people and her most favorite activity is cuddling on the couch. She enjoys going for walks, playing fetch and chasing balls. Babs continues to work on leash reactivity with dogs and has completed training with Heather Gutshall at Outbound Hounds. She will need some continued training and structure to keep up her success. Babs is getting along great with her laid back foster brother! She could do well in a home with another laid back dog and will need slow introductions to new dogs. Her foster mom is dedicated to her success and will help with post adoption support including help with dog introductions. Babs would make a wonderful companion for a dedicated family! She is perfectly crate trained and house broken. Now she just needs a family to call her own! He is 55 pounds of gorgeous, young (1-2 years old), neutered, bouncing boxer mix 85% of the time and 15% sweet cuddle bug with melting brown eyes once you wear down that energy. Pharaoh has had very little training, but his foster mom is working hard on basic obedience and walking on a leash. He is also working on crate training and will let his foster mom know when he needs to go out. He is friendly with everyone with meets! Secondary to his size and energy level he would do best with an active household that is willing to invest in his training. He gets along well with his foster siblings. He loves to play with them especially his brother that has a similar energy level. He has been easy to contain in a 4' field fence and has enjoyed running and exploring the acre and a half that is fenced! UPDATED (9/2016): Pharaoh is doing great in his foster home! He is a wild spirited boy with lots of energy. Perfect for an active family who could run some of that out of him. Pharaoh *loves* being outside and plays hard with one of his canine foster siblings who matches his energy well. They come in with tongues hanging long after playtime. Pharaoh is a typical boxer puppy. He loves to play ball. He fetches well or will just toss the ball around for himself. But like all puppies, Pharaoh still needs help with his manners. Pharaoh is housebroken and will go into his kennel with a cookie incentive. He is a good boy in his kennel. Pharaoh is working on learning sit. He is good about coming when called outside, inside he has a problem with distractions. Pharaoh is gorgeous, young, and full of energy. He needs someone who has experience with boxer energy and he would benefit greatly from someone interested in obedience training. I am not really sure what happened to me the first few years of my life! I was surrendered to the shelter in March with my brother (his name is Archie, check him out too he is almost as cool as me). They think we were kept outside a lot and not socialized much. I was terrified when I first got to the shelter. Thankfully PAWS came along and now I am a PAWS dog! I am still a little fearful especially when I first am getting to know people. I guess you could call me a bit of an introvert. The good new is that I am opening up and have come really far in my foster home! I even go on walks now! I used to hide in the corner but not anymore!! I am potty trained and crate trained. Recently I have been getting to stay out in the house because I have done so well in my crate and I haven't even torn anything up!! If you give me a chance I guarantee I will be your best friend! I am a southern bell who is looking for a fabulous forever home to fit my fabulous personality. I was surrendered to the shelter with my four puppies. They all have since been adopted but I am still looking to find a home of my own! I am a very loving, playful girl. I love to romp around the house and back yard. If my foster mom walks by me and tries to ignore me I will "boop" her with my paw- a true southern bell needs attention! I also love to snuggle and cuddle on the couch- preferably with my entire body touching my foster parent. I have yet to find a person I don't like. I am a little basis towards the person holding the treat though- but who can blame me?! I am working on not jumping up on people and my forever family with have to commit to continue with my basic training. Like all true southern bells organization and routine are key in my life and once I get down a routine I love it and do very well! If you are an active family with a lap to snuggle on I could be your girl! Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed. Meet Calvin. He’s a petite pit bull terrier just under three years old. Calvin is a very lucky boy. He was picked up by a kind family in Memphis TN when they saw him on the side of the road, defeated. He has been living with this amazing family since January 2016. Calvin lives with six other dogs. He gets along great with all of them, except for a grumpy male. Calvin does well with most dogs, especially when they are friendly and social toward him. Like every rescue dog, Calvin wants his own family! He was recently evaluated by a professional trainer and passed with flying colors! He has very good social skills with people, but prefers calm energy over loud, energetic energy… therefore, we feel that Calvin would do best in a home with adults and no children. He is an acrobatic catcher at fetch and enjoys outdoor playtime. Calvin is a super sweet dog who has probably seen a good bit of ugliness in his short life. He does have some scarring between his shoulder blades. All this boy wants is to be your shadow and play fetch with you. Calvin is potty and crate trained. He knows the commands, "sit," "stay," and "come." Calvin rides well in the car and behaves nicely at the vet's office. His indoor house manners are terrific! He particularly loves to follow his people around everywhere. Calvin has great potential to be in an unfenced yard because he does not wander off. He likes to stay close to his person. He barks when someone comes to the door, but greets them nicely. Calvin's foster loves him and wants whoever adopts him to be sensitive to his probable background and his need for continued positive socialization. He's a great dog and would love to show you that! Posted Breed: American Bulldog / Mixed. Currently Fostering in New England!! Meet Mama Amorina. Or as her foster calls her, Mama. She's a beautiful american bulldog mix who is looking for her second chance at life. She comes to Paws from our sister rescue in TN, Robyns Nest. Mama was found in rural Tennessee in a rain culvert the morning after a big rain storm with her puppy in tow. A good samaritan attempted to search for their family, but unfortunately no one claimed them. Mama has the sweetest disposition. We don't know what her past is, but we know she holds no ill will towards anyone. She enjoys playing with other dogs and is good with kids. Update: This past summer, Mama was romping with her canine friends in the yard and was injured. She was immediately brought to the emergency vet where it was discovered that she had a spinal injury that would require surgery. Supports of Robyn's Nest and PAWS New England rallied behind Mama, and raised the funds required to get her the surgery she desperately needed. The surgery was completed without any complications and she moved to a foster home for recovery. Mama underwent intense physical therapy and laser therapy so that she could regain function of her hind legs and walk. Volunteers droves hours each day just so she could attend. Many months after surgery and therapy, Mama has made an incredible recovery!! She does have a limp that makes her walk like a drunken lady. But we think that just makes her more adorable! Besides this, she has no other medical issues related to the injury. She is restricted from playing, and will be for the rest of her life, due to fear of re-injury. But that doesn't bother Mama. She is happy being a lazy love bug. It is believed that with continued physical therapy, Mama's limp would decrease and her walking would improve. Mama would love to go to a home where she could continue her therapy, but anywhere with a warm bed for snuggling sounds just fine to Mama. After all she has been through, she deserves a loving family to call her own. Mama charms everyone she meets instantly with her incredible personality. Some wonderful family is going to be lucky to call her theirs!! Posted Breed: Terrier / Mixed. Fostering in New England!! Abby (and Scruffy) were surrendered by their owner in March of 2015 to a dog sanctuary in Tennessee. The owner was moving and could not take the dogs with him. What a tragedy for Abby and Scruffy, who found themselves displaced out of their forever home as seniors! Very quickly, the sanctuary staff realized that the boarding situation was too overwhelming for these pups, and they were moved to a foster home in TN, where they spent several months before Paws New England was informed of their plight to travel North. They arrived in New England on January 30 to a new foster home. Abby is one of those lucky ladies that doesn’t look or act her age! While she is a senior and is very calm and laid-back for the most part, she does show initial excitement when people visit, and she makes it a point to seek out attention from adults and children. After a while, she likes to have a quiet place to rest away from the activity. A generally quiet home would suit her best. She loves to be walked daily and is very good on leash, but also loves an opportunity to occasionally run around in a fenced yard and to stretch out in the sun. Abby (after proper initial introductions) is usually good with other dogs. She would, however, prefer to be an only dog or to be adopted with Scruffy, her life-long companion. This sweet senior deserves nothing less than a fantastic home and we’re determined to find that for her!! Posted Breed: Black and Tan Coonhound / Treeing Walker Coonhound / Mixed. Fostering in New England!! Channing was one of seven dogs rescued from a neglectful property in Tennessee. They grew up in a bleak backyard with no socialization, veterinary care, or human companionship. When their owners grew weary of the seven dogs, they called animal control to come and get them one by one. When Paws New England learned about this family of hounds, we simply had to get involved. We rescued all seven. Five have found their forever homes. Channing was one of the last to be rescued from the property. He spent months in boarding before moving into a New England foster home. Channing is blossoming in his foster home! His foster mom reports he's doing really well on his basic training. He's already mastered sit, go to bed and leave it. He continues to work on paw, down, come and watch me. He has learned to take treats gently and is completely house broken. Channing lives harmoniously live with his canine foster brother, Buddy, and 2 feline foster siblings! He continues to work on his confidence building, but we have big hopes for this boy! New situations or dogs can still be a little scary for him, but he's getting better every day! Channing is loves going for walks or long hikes with his foster dad. He's happiest when he gets plenty of exercise and play time! His foster mom reports that he loves walking around with his favorite stuffed animal in his mouth and it's absolutely adorable! Channing takes the lead from his friendly and confident foster brother, Buddy. We'd love to see him in a home with a friendly canine sibling to show him the ropes. In fact, this will be critical for Channing's overall longterm growth. He will need a patient and loving family who can make a commitment to providing him with the exercise his needs and the time he deserves to adjust to a new home. If you would like to be part of Channings fairy tale ending, we'd love to hear from you!
