Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier / Labrador Retriever / Mixed. Fostering in New England!! Check Out My Very First Trip to the Beach!! https://youtu.be/fvhyzVvWub4 Young-Single-Brindle Female seeks Forever Family for long walks on the beach, hikes, strolls in the park, car rides, lots of treats and belly rubs! Hi! I'm Mara! I'm a 5 year old pit bull terrier mix who is on the hunt for the love(s) of her life!! Everyone who meets me says I have an infectious smile & happy spirit. I'm attentive and loving, and ready to be your number 1! I came to PAWS from Tennessee where my southern foster took really good care of me. But Tennessee didn't have these awesome things called adoption events. New England was where it was at so I packed my bags, hitched a ride on a transport truck and headed to my good friends at John Gagnon’s Pet Resort. I boarded there for a few months where I learned some valuable basic training skills like sit, down and recall. I am currently fostering in New England with an amazing foster family. They continue to work with me on my basic training and leash skills. When I wake up in the morning I go straight to the door and patiently wait for my foster dad to grab the leash and take me out to use the bathroom. I get plenty of treats and belly rubs and I show my love and appreciation with tail wags, butt wiggles, snuggles and kisses. On weekends I like to attend adoption events in hopes to find my people. Did I mention I LOVE car rides? I also love to go to the beach or park and chase a ball or frisbee and run out some of my energy. I also love to go on hikes! I don't completely ignore bicyclists and other hikers that we find along the way! Then I go home and take a nice long nap or snuggle with my foster dad. I would probably do best as your one and only. But I am currently living with a low-key, mellow male dog who I have come to adore!! We took it real slow and now we are best friends! I am not leash or crate reactive around other dogs so can easily be out in public or happily hanging out in my crate. In fact, my foster family and visitors are so impressed with my polite behavior around my foster canine brothers and other dogs on the street. I am looking for a forever family that is energetic and will take me for walks, runs or hikes but also loves naps and snuggle time. I need a family that will be disciplined, respect my canine to canine space, keep up with my training and mentally and physically challenge me. Let’s not waste another single day because I can’t even wait to meet you! If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever. Sweet Dixie Roo was found on a farm in Arkansas after a devastating tornado had come through! Who knows how long she had been on her own or how far she had traveled! She enjoyed the freedom of the farm that she was found on but unfortunately she has a thing for cows- chasing them to be exact- and was once again on the search for her forever home! Thankfully a PAWS volunteer heard about Dixie and she is now a PAWS girl! This sweet girl is shy at first but quickly warms up to her people. She enjoys sleeping in bed with her humans but understands that she sometimes needs to sleep in her own bed. She is house trained and will let you know when she needs to go out. She loves being an inside dog and loves hanging out the house. She is working on leash training and training in her foster home. Dixie would love an active family with a fenced yard and a big bed! Please consider adding this love bug to your home! Rollo

      verified

      rescue
      Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier. Rollo was brought in as a stray with bite wounds to hind legs and bottom area. He also had a tail injury that required us to amputate part of his tail. He has spent the last 4 months recovering and he is now ready to find his forever home! Rollo is a little shy and can be slow to warm up to new people, but once he gets to know you he is a big snuggle bug. He is a smart guy and has mastered several skills already -- sit, stay, paw, catching treats in the air, and walking on leash. Rollo is housetrained in the kennel, but that can change with a change in environment. In his downtime, Rollo likes to hang out on his doggie couch and would love to snuggle in bed with his new humans. Rollo enjoys spending time outside in the snow or sunshine --- he does not do rain --- and enjoys walks in the woods and short hikes. Rollo's ideal home would be a moderately active household --- someone who would take him for walks in the woods, short hikes or throw a ball and then relax on the couch in front of the TV. Updated as of 8/2017! Rollo has made amazing progress over the last few months! In addition to the other commands that he already knew, he has learned how to clean up his toys out of the yard and bring them back to his bed. Rollo has also demonstrated his love of playing fetch, and will faithfully bring back and drop any of his toys into an outstretched hand. While his favorite toys for fetch are his Kong and his mini football, he has also started to catch frisbees! When he's not fetching his toys, Rollo loves to sit in the shade outside. He has also continued to walk very well on leash, and will often stay right beside the person walking him, without pulling at all. Additionally, Rollo has made amazing progress when it comes to interacting with other dogs. Although he's still a bit socially awkward and timid around other dogs, and would most likely do better being the only dog in the household, he has learned to sit and ignore them while on walks or hikes. However, when it comes to humans, Rollo has blossomed into a social butterfly, and loves meeting new people. Although he prefers slower introductions, after a few minutes of getting to know a new person, he loves to get belly rubs and ear scratches from them. Rollo especially loves kisses and hugs from people that he is familiar with, and would make the perfect addition to a loving family. Name: Rollo Sex: Male Breed: Pitbull mix Age: 6 years old as of April 2017 Weight: 63 pounds of April 2017 Spayed/Neutered: yes Vaccinations: Up to date Heartworm: Negative Microchipped: Yes Medical: Takes daily allergy drops orally. Doing great with daily medication. BASED ON OUR OBSERVATIONS: Dogs: Needs slow introductions, prefers larger female dogs Cats: Unknown Kids: Unknown. Is shy, we are looking for a home with kids over the age of 12. Location: USA
Posted Breed: Shepherd / Labrador Retriever / Mixed. Fostering in New England!! PAWS New England has a special place in their hearts for senior dogs and Abagail is no exception!! This sweet girl lost her home in 2015 due to her owner moving and not being able to take her and her canine brother, Scruffy. Scruffy has since been adopted and Abagail patiently waits for her forever family to find her. Abby is one of those lucky ladies that doesn't look or act her age!! While she is a senior and very calm & laid-back, she does know how to have a good time. She greets adults and children with excitement and after a while she retires to a quiet place to rest. Abby loves to go for her daily walks and is very good on leash. She also enjoying trotting around her foster Mom's yard and stretching out in the sun. Abby would love a quieter home where she can spend her days relaxing and hanging out with her people. After proper introductions she does get a long with older, more mellow dogs. However, we think she'd love to be an only dog. And believe us, she has more than enough love to give! This sweet senior deserves nothing less than a fantastic home and we’re determined to find that for her!! Location: USA
Posted Breed: Black and Tan Coonhound / Treeing Walker Coonhound / Mixed. Fostering in New England!! Must have another friendly and confident dog in the home- no exceptions!! Channing was one of seven dogs rescued from a neglectful property in Tennessee. They grew up in a bleak backyard with no socialization, veterinary care, or human companionship. When their owners grew weary of the seven dogs, they called animal control to come and get them one by one. When Paws New England learned about this family of hounds, we simply had to get involved. We rescued all seven. Five have found their forever homes. Channing was one of the last to be rescued from the property. He spent months in boarding before moving into a New England foster home. Channing is blossoming in his foster home! His foster mom reports he's doing really well on his basic training. He's already mastered sit, go to bed and leave it. He continues to work on paw, down, come and watch me. He has learned to take treats gently and is completely house broken. Channing lives harmoniously live with his canine foster brother, Buddy, and 2 feline foster siblings! He continues to work on his confidence building, but we have big hopes for this boy! New situations or dogs can still be a little scary for him, but he's getting better every day! Channing is loves going for walks or long hikes with his foster dad. He's happiest when he gets plenty of exercise and play time! His foster mom reports that he loves walking around with his favorite stuffed animal in his mouth and it's absolutely adorable! Channing takes the lead from his friendly and confident foster brother, Buddy. We'd love to see him in a home with a friendly canine sibling to show him the ropes. In fact, this will be critical for Channing's overall longterm growth. He will need a patient and loving family who can make a commitment to providing him with the exercise his needs and the time he deserves to adjust to a new home. Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier / Rottweiler / Mixed. Everyone who meets Dixie falls in love. She is one of the sweetest, most sensitive, loving dogs you could hope to meet. She's so happy all the time, and even though she's currently residing in an indoor kennel, she has made the best of it. Just seeing her foster mom come through the door brings out her bubbling personality and she jumps up and down with excitement while she waits for her turn for daily one-on-one time. After a chest massage, having he ears rubbed, and giving lots of sweet kisses, she's ready for dinner or a snack. Her favorite past time is to lay in her bed and watch what’s going on around her. Dixie's ideal home would include: an affectionate human, someone to take her for walks, toys to call her own, lots of treats, and a plastic crate with a fluffy bed inside to sleep in (she prefers to sleep in a crate). Dixie does not like to be outside alone so a fenced yard is not required, however, during nice weather she would enjoy a fenced yard with a doggy door for quick potty breaks. Dixie would do best in a quiet home until she is confident in her surroundings Dixie is still anxious around new dogs due to her background. She has successfully played with several non-dominant dogs in her foster home but she needs slow introduction. Ideally, Dixie would prefer to be the only dog or have only one other canine sibling. Background: Dixie, and another pup, were abandoned at a house in Midtown Memphis by a college student who moved away. During her homeless time, Dixie and her canine friend were attacked by a pack of dogs. Her friend didn’t make it but Dixie was rescued in time and with proper veterinary care she made a full recovery. Although she was defensive and anxious around other dogs when first rescued, she has made tremendous progress and with slow and proper introductions she enjoys playing, chasing, running, and wrestling with some other dogs. Dixie does not enjoy rough play with people. Although we have not had her with small children, we believe Dixie is best suited for a home with older children. Dixie has so much love to give and can’t wait to find a home to call her own. NOTICE WITH REGARD TO LOCATION OF DOGS: Please note: Paws New England is a foster-based rescue. We do not have a brick and mortar building to house the dogs we rescue. We have found that dogs in foster homes are much more adoptable because they have been observed in a home setting. Dogs listed with Paws New England typically reside in various locations throughout the south (primarily Tennessee, Texas, and Arkansas) and New England (not necessarily in the state of Rhode Island). You will be notified by the adoption coordinator of the location of the dog you are interested in so you have the ability to decide whether to pursue adoption or not. Dogs transported to New England are done so at a fee of $150.00 paid directly to the transporting company by Paws New England; no additional transport costs are responsibility of adopter. This fee is included in the adoption donation. Adoption donations cover pre-adoption vet costs (including vaccinations, spay/neuter when age appropriate, and heartworm testing/treatment when necessary), a microchip, and transportation to New England if necessary. Donations for our young, healthy puppies and dogs support their fellow canines of advanced age or suffering from injuries and abuse whose donations are reduced but whose veterinary costs are typically much higher. We appreciate your understanding that your dog will help others in need. All known information about the animal is listed above. We do our best to give accurate information, but most of our dogs are rescues and do not come with a known history. Posted Breed: Shepherd / Hound / Mixed. Fostering in New England!! Roscoe and his sister, Diva (now adopted), were living in a home with 12 dogs and cats. Unfortunately, their home caught fire and they were some of the lucky animals to make it out. When they escaped, they lived in the woods for weeks until they could be caught. After arriving to the shelter they were absolutely terrified. They never showed an ounce of aggression, but would just freeze and tremble. After a number of weeks passed, both pups started to blossom! Roscoe is a handsome 1.5 year old hound mix. He’s the perfect size at 45 pounds! Now, instead of freezing when people approach he happily wags his tail. He’s never walked on leash in his life and he’s starting to learn how to do that. Because of his shyness, a fenced yard is required for Roscoe’s new home. He’s come such a long way in such a short period of time. We’d love to see him in a loving & patient home where he can continue to blossom. He absolutely needs another friendly and confident dog in the home to show him the way. His sister, Diva, has recently been adopted and we hope it will be his turn next!! Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Mixed. Chestnut ( aka PB&J ) is a young female Lab mix who is roughly 3.5 years old and 73 lbs. that found herself at a high kill shelter with her puppies. Her puppies were adopted out by another rescue, leaving Chestnut there alone; that is not the policy of Paws NE - we take mom and the babies (and daddy too if he's around). She has always been a very sweet girl, even in the shelter. Chestnut prefers to be your one and only. She promises she will shower you with unconditional love. She loves to go for walks and to ride in the car with the window rolled down so she can sniff the fresh air. Her favorite place in the woods is sniffing and exploring. Did we mention she is housetrained? Chestnut is social, calm and friendly around people. She loves to be where people are. Posted Breed: Hound / Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed. Penny in action with a friend .... https://youtu.be/6-31bAdYecc Updated Note from Foster Mom: My new foster Penny - SPECIAL girl... needs a home with at least one other confident dog, a yard to run in and more importantly time to adjust with no pressure. Took us two days to get her into the house and come near us at the Lodge but as you can see she is warming right up now. Labeled as feral nothing could be further from the truth - she loves and craves human attention. She's shy but I don't actually see her as fearful. This dog needs the right situation. - someone home A LOT, room to run while contained for now, someone with patience - although I have not witnessed it she has been noted to have an aversion to crates so hence the reason someone home until she can be tested alone loose in a house. Rescued from the Memphis Animal Shelter, this little peach is still a bit shy but is coming around with the help of her canine foster friends whom she loves - she's checking the humans out and seems to think they will be okay. For now she's healthy and doing well and we hope to find a new home for her in New England ASAP.
