If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: Pointer / Mixed (short coat). AVA 1-2 YEAR OLD POINTER MIX FEMALE Hello, my name is Ava but my foster family likes to call me "Ava Bean" or just "Bean". I was rescued from a local kennel after being there for a long time. My leg was hurt and I didn't feel well. Now I'm feeling better and I'm a sweet girl who has some anxiety with new situations and when I'm alone. I prefer to be the one to initiate affection so would do best with older children and adults. I'm low to medium energy, weigh approximately 50 pounds, and prefer to be the "one and only" fur child. I walk well on a leash (I only pull when I'm excited). I will fetch (once or twice) but would be fine with leash walks. I absolutely LOVE food and will do anything for a treat. My foster family says--- Ava is a sweet dog who prefers to be an only pet. She believes she is a lap dog and loves to cuddle on the couch. She enjoys a short walk but nothing too long due to her old leg injury. Ava would do best with a family who is home often. Ava fits in a 36" wire crate. She is in a foster home in Lorain, OH with a family of 6 (2 adults and 4 children ranging from 9-16). Ava is looking for a forever family and her adoption fee is $200. She is in a foster home in Lorain, OH.

      Location: Lorain, OH
Posted Breed: Boxer / Mixed (short coat). Puppy Storm Storm was surrendered to our rescue. Storm was purchased by her previous owners from a breeder and was never trained in basic obedience. Storm was never socialized and therefore was very afraid when she came into rescue. Due to her anxiety she has a bite history but has been rehabilitated. Storm has not attempted to bite in a long time and does well at adoption events and with all people. She's a loving dog looking for her second chance. Storm is UTD on vaccines, microchipped, spayed, heartworm negative, crate trained, house broken, and loves other dogs. She is very curious and pushy with cats and would be best in a home without them. Storm is on Prozac to help with her anxiety and it has improved her behavior. Storm likes women better than men due to her past. Storm LOVES balls!!! She loves to chew them, fetch them, and will entertain herself for hours with a single tennis ball. She is medium energy and would benefit from regular walks or a fenced in yard. She walks well on a head halti or harness and leash. She is in a foster home in Lorain, OH. Special Requirements: Must continue her Prozac until a vet says otherwise; would be best with older children or adults only
