Both are sweet and a little timid. They use pads. They need work on leash training, but I don’t think that will be a problem. They spent overnight with a 3 year old, another dog and cats. No problems with either. The vet thinks they are about 3-4 months old as their 6 month teeth are not in. I am sure they are going to be great family members. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- We encourage adopters from all over Northern California and the Greater New England Area and will do our absolute best to accommodate you in arranging for transportation if you choose to adopt a dachshund from FDR. More About Chiweenie Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Furever Dachshund Rescue committed to taking my siblings and me into rescue because we were scheduled to be euthanized. We were promptly removed from horrific shelter conditions and brought to a local veterinarian who kept us and vaccinated us and gave us a safe and warm place to be prior to our journey. The morning of our transport some of us weren’t feeling so well but we began our journey thinking that it was nerves. By the night time, some of us were very sick and by morning our overnight transporter took us to the local veterinarian clinic. Many of us were sick but one of us was critical and the veterinarian was not equipped to care for us. A nice woman made the drive to pick us up and transport us to the emergency hospital where we would get 24 hour critical care. It was determined that we were sick with Parvo, Corona Virus, and Pneumonia. The smallest of us almost didn’t survive. It’s been 6 weeks since that horrific period and we are now all healthy and happy. We are current on our puppy vaccinations and have been spayed and neutered. We have also more than tripled in size because we are being fed the very best food on the market and it is yummy! I am a baby beagle/hound who needs a lot of attention. I need to be in a home with someone who can spend most of their time with me because I need to be let out frequently. I am not yet housetrained as I am just a puppy. I love to play and get along well with other pets. Because I am a puppy I am teething and like to chew on everything I can get my mouth on. I will only be placed in a home that has the time and experience to train and care for a puppy. He is now a handsome boy and all his hair has filled back in. We do not know any of his past. He can be shy to start but comes around. He keeps to himself a lot, BUT loves meal time. He dances around in delight while his meals are prepared. He is fine with the other small dogs in his foster home but really does not have a lot of patients for the big dogs. He has met the kitty’s but really cannot be trusted with them. Scotch is an extra special boy who deserves that extra special home. Her issues are not IVDD related however veterinarians have been unable to pinpoint exactly what the issues are. She is currently on a small dose of prednisone every day which helps with her issues. Bella is an extremely high energy dachshund but her exercise needs to be constantly monitored because over activity causes her to seize. She is also prone to involuntary body movements (not seizures) when over stimulated. Bella loves to play with other dogs but that has to be seriously limited because of her disability. She is easily excitable and can sometimes be overbearing when playing with other dogs. Bella is a special needs dachshund that needs to be in a home that can afford her ongoing care and is experienced with the breed and caring for a dog with neurological issues. If you are interested in adopting Bella please contact her foster mom directly for additional information. We are happy to share all medical records and history that we have knowledge of and answer any questions you may have. Her endearing personality is contagious; it’s not possible to not fall in love. She shares kisses enthusiastically and will snuggle for hours. Dixie is very energetic for two reasons: her breed (doxie/jack Russell mix) and her age (puppy)! She’s learning potty training and is crate trained but will still have an occasional accident in the house if not kept to a strict schedule. She will go in her crate if you leave her in too long so potty breaks often when crated is best. Dixie loves toys, treats, other dogs and especially her human. We do feel that she would do best in a home with another dog because she likes to share a crate with some of her foster siblings. She plays very well with other younger and energetic dogs but can be overbearing for an older, less active dog. Dixie is also a busybody and wants to know everything that is going on. She can be very vocal when she hears noises and also when she is playing rough. She truly doesn’t understand that she is a small dog and will often play with dogs much larger than she. Because Dixie is a puppy, she will need to be in a home that has the time to train and work with her. She needs regular exercise too! A home with children is also a plus as she is great with people of all ages. Dixie is a sweetheart; she has a way of looking at you and getting her way. Everyone who sees me walking likes to compliment me. I am actually a very affectionate boy but I do have some behavioral issues that need some work. I am currently working on these issues so that I can find my furever home but I will need someone who is dachshund savvy to adopt me. My biggest issue was with my crate; I was extremely protective and would lunge at whomever would pass by. Now that I have spent time in my foster home I really like my crate and go into it willingly. I can get kind of growly and can be snappy at times if you try to remove me from my crate so it's best to just open the door and allow me to come out on my own. The crate is my safe space and I am afraid you are going to take me away from it so I try to protect it to the best of my ability. This is not a problem now but because it was a past behavioral issue we feel it is important to mention it. The person who adopts me needs to now how to handle a dachshund and must have experience with the breed. I will not be adopted into a home that has children or small children that visit often. Now for some of the fun stuff about me… I am a champ when it comes to playing fetch! I could chase the ball for hours and I am great at bringing it back. I also get along with all sorts of other dogs both big and small. I even like to play with some of the puppies too! I have a very "Live and let live personality" but I do like my person. I have a favorite person in my foster home and she likes to play fetch with me. I am also really smart and did I mention how gorgeous I am? Just take a look at my cute pictures to see for yourself! I deserve a wonderful furever home with someone who understands my breed. We dachshunds can be stubborn and sometimes very protective and my furever family will need to understand this to be able to give me what I need. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ We encourage adopters from all over the Greater New England Area and will do our absolute best to accommodate you in arranging for transportation if you choose to adopt a dachshund from FDR. I found my way to a nice person’s home and stayed for about a week before they surrendered me to Animal Control. When I got to the shelter the staff realized that I was in rough shape. They immediately sent me to the vet where blood test and x-rays were done. My leg was weak and I was unable to bear weight on it. After shaving the leg and shoulder to make sure there were no open wounds the vet found swelling in the shoulder and chest area and some faint bruising. Overall the assessment conclusion was that there was a lot of soft tissue damage but nothing broken. I was to continue on medications and rest with the hopes that my leg would recover. This is when I became available for a rescue to take me. I was not available for adoption to the public so if a rescue didn’t step up quickly I was on the list to be euthanized. Well, Furever Dachshund Rescue, yes a dachshund rescue, saw me and wanted to help. My foster mom said she saw my face and couldn’t resist so I was safe and on my way to a loving foster home. I love my foster home and all my foster brothers and sisters. I get along well with everyone. My foster mom took me for a surgical consult to see if she could get my leg repaired but that was not possible because I had already lost large amounts of muscle mass. It was recommended that my leg be amputated but my foster mom knew that I was trying to use it and we worked to rehabilitate my leg all the time. Well my foster mom was right because after a year of running and playing in the yard we discovered that I was using my leg much more and was bearing weight on it. It’s not perfect and it will never be but I am happy and no further damage has occurred. Other than my disability I am a healthy happy boy. I need a home with a family that will love me and play with me and give me a wonderful life. I am truly a fantastic dog and love my owners unconditionally. Please give me a chance to show you how wonderful I truly am; I promise not to disappoint you! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- We encourage adopters from all over Northern California and the Greater New England Area and will do our absolute best to accommodate you in arranging for transportation if you choose to adopt a dachshund from FDR.
