Both are sweet and a little timid. They use pads. They need work on leash training, but I don’t think that will be a problem. They spent overnight with a 3 year old, another dog and cats. No problems with either. The vet thinks they are about 3-4 months old as their 6 month teeth are not in. I am sure they are going to be great family members. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- We encourage adopters from all over Northern California and the Greater New England Area and will do our absolute best to accommodate you in arranging for transportation if you choose to adopt a dachshund from FDR. More About Chiweenie Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: Italian Greyhound / Pug / Mixed (short coat). Adoption Fee: 375.00. Meet Calvin Calvin is still a puppy so he is very playful and energetic. He did not have a great start in life; he was found as a stray on the side of the road as a young puppy. He was very fearful at first but has finally come out of his shell. He warms up to people quickly and loves to snuggle. Calvin is not potty trained but he is a work in progress. He will need a lot of training and reinforcements in this area. If there is another dog in the household it would be best if it were a younger, smaller dog that is also playful. Calvin needs lots of exercise which isn't difficult because of his size and needs lots of socialization. We feel that Calvin would well in a home with a fenced yard as this will help with his potty training. He is not fond of his harness and leash and sometimes tries to get out of them. Calvin does not do well with children or cats. He is a very sweet dog but needs an experienced home that can devote time and patience to his training. He would do very well as an only dog. Calvin would not do well in an apartment for condo because he will bark at small noises. He is also terrified of a crate and will work himself into a frenzy by chewing up any toys or blankets, drooling excessively, peeing and pooping, and biting at the cage. We have tried to break him of this but have been unsuccessful. We have found that keeping him contained to one room when we are not home has been okay. Please do not apply to adopt Calvin if you are not able to devote time to working with this puppy. Thank you. We encourage adopters from all over the Greater New England Area and will do our absolute best to accommodate you in arranging for transportation if you choose to adopt a dachshund from FDR. Posted Breed: Dachshund (short coat). Adoption Fee: 375.00. Meet Princess Princess is a special girl they we have been working with for almost a year. She was one of 8 dachshunds that were surrendered to us after living her life with rare human interaction. She has finally gotten to a point where she is less nervous and once she gets one-on-one attention she warms up rather quickly. New people scare her and quick movements and loud noises startle her. She needs to be in a home with adults only that do not have many people coming and going. Princess likes other dogs her size but has had little exposure to large dogs. Her house-training and leash walking skills are a work in progress. We are requiring that the home she is adopted into has a secure, fenced yard because of her fearful demeanor. She would do best in a home that can give her constant attention. Princess is currently on medication to help with her fear and anxiety but once acclimated to her new home and once she has overcome her fear will be able to be weaned off. We are being very selective of the home Princess goes to because she is a challenging dachshund. You must have experience with fearful and anxious dogs to be considered and you must have a fenced yard. Thank you!
