If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Breed: Beagle
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Senior
      Location: Durham, NC
Posted Breed: Beagle. Dudley is a very sweet little senior man who is quiet, very well behaved and doesn't mind other dogs or cats. He is so easy going and doesn't let anything bother him, he would make the perfect companion for a calm household who wants a buddy to hang out on the couch with. He is estimated to be around 10-12 years old and weighs around 30 lbs, the perfect size for any home! Dudley would love to have a home without many stairs and would love carpet or lots of area rugs. His legs and joints are a little arthritic, so steps and slippery hardwood floors can be a little tricky for him. But he doesn't let them stop him from showing you his dance moves when it's dinner time, and shaking his head around in excitement! He is hard of hearing (like many dogs his age), but follows his foster sister dog around the house to know what's going on. When he was originally found as a stray, he had several large cancerous tumors, which have since been surgically removed, and he seems to be feeling and eating well! Eating is definitely Dudley's favorite activity, followed by short leash walks around the neighborhood, taking naps in comfy dog beds (there are 6 in his current foster home to choose from!) and the occasional howl when he wants your attention :) To submit an application, please visit http://www.hopeanimals.org/adoption-application Thank you for your interest in adopting a rescued pet! Posted Breed: Catahoula Leopard Dog / Hound. Meet Ash! Our best guess is that she is a Catahoula Leopard / Hound mix, as she has the prettiest merle coat and ember-colored eyes! She's about two years old and 50 - 55 pounds. She's medium-energy and very easy going, but loves to play with her doggie friends. She's also as sweet as can be! Ash is going through heartworm treatment, but is eligible for our Foster to Adopt program during her treatments. You get to have Ash join your family, but the rescue pays for her heartworm treatments and finalizes the adoption once treatment is completed. She would love to meet you! Posted Breed: Jack Russell Terrier / Chihuahua / Mixed (short coat). Dexter is awesome! He is a 10 year old male who weighs about 10 pounds. He is a sweet and affectionate little guy who takes a minute to warm up to new people, but once he does, he is a super-cuddly companion. He has so much love to give! Dexter’s personality is really sweet and he loves to play with his soft toys. You can see typical terrier qualities as far as energy, playfulness, feistiness and loyalty. He bonds quickly to one person and wants to be your buddy. He loves going for car rides and makes a great travel companion, especially when he can look out the window! He also loves going for leash walks, and sitting out in the yard on a warm day. He is the sweetest little guy and would love to meet you! Sex: Female Female
      Age: Senior
      Location: Durham, NC
Posted Breed: Beagle. Duffy is a sweet senior lemon Beagle (under 20 pounds, age around 8?). She is being treated for a non-contagious skin issue (her early pics show how much hair loss she had, but it's coming back now!) Here's what her foster mom had to say about her: "Duffy is a loving girl who just wants any attention you can give her. She is content snuggling up against you, giving nose bonks, or watching you in fascination. She likes to have her floppy ears and squishy neck rubbed. She will even lean into you for a playful wrestling match. Duffy enjoys being around other dogs for companionship and loves playing with puzzle toys on her own. She is curious about visitors who come to the house or children who happen to be out in the neighborhood. Duffy considers everyone her friend. She has yet to vocalize like a typical hound, but she can hold up her end of the conversation with a soft mumble. Duffy has adjusted very well to living inside the house with her family, but she still enjoys sunning herself outside in the yard with her foster friends when the weather is pleasant. This bubbly girl has a lot of energy to burn, so she needs to be exercised daily – either on a leash or in a fenced yard. She is a Beagle after all and can be distracted by her sniffer!" Posted Breed: Australian Cattle Dog/Blue Heeler. Dotty is a very sweet senior dog, we believe she is about 11 years old. She weighs 26 lbs and has a beautiful white coat with tan spots, hence the name Dotty! She is extremely gentle and shy and gets along very well with other dogs. Dotty can be a bit timid, but is gaining confidence by the day. She does not seem to hear well, but that does not slow her down! Dotty is crate trained and walks well on the leash.
