If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Location: Durham, NC
Posted Breed: Dutch Shepherd / Great Dane / Mixed (long coat). Hi, I'm Maggie! Don’t let my adorable grey muzzle fool you, I am 5-6 year old pup with so much love and snuggles to give. I really am not sure what breed I am, possibly Dutch shepherd because my foster mom tells me my coat is the most gorgeous, soft brindle coat she has ever pet and is always rubbing my tummy, it is fantastic. My foster dad affectionately says I have big dumb ears because I just can’t help holding them up like a tepee over my head to listen to all the strange sounds of the world. When I am really focused, they cross in front of each other for supreme hearing. I love my daily walks they keep me looking fit and trim at around 60 pounds. I practice my runway walk every day and love to strut my stuff; my foster mom and dad think I am great to walk and don’t really pull. I am basically a supermodel. Let me tell you, I am very laid back. I could care less when my foster parents dress me up with hats and stack random things on my head. They think it is hilarious and adorable, I don’t really care as long as I get to snuggle with them. If you are looking for the best snuggling dog you will ever meet, don’t go looking anywhere else. I cannot get enough of snuggling up right next to you and am a perfect companion for watching Netflix or taking an afternoon nap. I don’t really remember much about growing up, but for some reason I have a few irrational fears that I don’t mind sharing with you. Loud noises can freak me out, even if I cause them because I am a bit clumsy. The scariest thing out there is ceiling fans. They do absolutely nothing to me, but I always have a wary eye on the ceiling when I see them. That’s okay though! I don’t mind them that much, I think they just surprise me. Meeting other dogs is the best thing in the world and I will flip in the air out of excitement, just to be next to them. My foster mom and dad are very patient working with me to contain my excitement, but sometimes seeing my friends (because every dog is my friend) is just too much! I get along great with all my dog friends, big or small even if my excitement bothers them at first. My foster siblings and I have always gotten along great, but they have all been adopted. I think it is my turn next, my foster mom says that my perfect human friend will come soon enough. Anyways, that is enough about me! I can’t wait to meet you and my foster parents are excited to put me in the best home they can because, well, I am just the best dog ever! You can click here to put in an application, and one of the foster coordinators will talk to you soon! Thank you for your interest in adopting a rescued pet! He loves people, but takes a minute to warm up to strangers. Once he does, he wants nothing more than to lay by your side and watch TV! This happy little guy is very playful, high energy, loves to play fetch and does well with most dogs after proper introductions are made, but he likes to be the center of attention. He is crate trained and housetrained, and does great on a leash. He would do best in a home without cats. He would love to meet you! Breed: Beagle
      Sex: Male Male

      Location: Durham, NC
Posted Breed: Beagle. Dudley is a very sweet little senior man who is quiet, very well behaved and doesn't mind other dogs or cats. He is so easy going and doesn't let anything bother him, he would make the perfect companion for a calm household who wants a buddy to hang out on the couch with. He is estimated to be around 10-12 years old and weighs around 30 lbs, the perfect size for any home! Dudley would love to have a home without many stairs and would love carpet or lots of area rugs. His legs and joints are a little arthritic, so steps and slippery hardwood floors can be a little tricky for him. But he doesn't let them stop him from showing you his dance moves when it's dinner time, and shaking his head around in excitement! He is hard of hearing (like many dogs his age), but follows his foster sister dog around the house to know what's going on. When he was originally found as a stray, he had several large cancerous tumors, which have since been surgically removed, and he seems to be feeling and eating well! Eating is definitely Dudley's favorite activity, followed by short leash walks around the neighborhood, taking naps in comfy dog beds (there are 6 in his current foster home to choose from!) and the occasional howl when he wants your attention :) To submit an application, please visit http://www.hopeanimals.org/adoption-application Thank you for your interest in adopting a rescued pet! Posted Breed: Shih Tzu / Yorkshire Terrier Yorkie. HELLO! MY NAME IS Mildred (“Millie” when I’m feeling spunky, which is most of the time) I am a senior, 10-11 year old, Shih-Tzu/Yorkie mix (I think? Maybe with some Poodle?), weighing about 11 pounds, who was surrendered by my owner to a shelter, and Hope Animal Rescue saved me! I LOVE treats, collecting toys, and bossing my foster parents around. I just had a day at the spa - see how much better I look after being groomed? I have a playful disposition at times and can be really sweet when I want to cuddle up with my foster mom on the couch. I am not so great at sharing my toys or food, and would prefer to be an only dog. My foster parents haven't seen me around cats, so they're not sure if I would do well with cats. Older children are fine with me, but I don't think I'd do well in a home with young children. I NEED cuddles, a warm bed to sleep in, and some structure and consistent training. Practice makes perfect, right! You can put in an application if you're interested in meeting me! Click on the link here! Thank you for your interest in adopting a rescued pet! Our adoption fees are as follows: Puppies and Dogs (up through 7 years old) – $250 Dogs (8 years of age or older) – $100 Kittens and Cats (up through 7 years old) – $100 Cats (8 years of age or older) – $50 Adoption Application: http://www.hopeanimals.org/#!adoption-application/c1trs
