If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: Shepherd / Mixed. Kodi is a goofy girl who loves to smile! We think she's a mix of bobtail and some sort of shepherd, but we aren't exactly sure. She is adorable though! She is house trained and walks happily on a leash right beside you. She is a smart girl who knows sit, stay, up, down, and shake with both paws! She wants nothing more than to be loved and adores cuddles. She loves fetch and squeaky toys, but long walks aren't her style. Kodi can make friends with people and calm dogs who respect her space, but is recommended in a home without children. She would love to find a family of her own to give her a calm and loving home! Dog experience preferred. To be considered for adoption, please submit an application at https://www.petstablished.com/adoption_form/4128/generic. Thank you! Location: USA
Posted Breed: Boxer / Staffordshire Bull Terrier / Mixed. Meet Ozzie! Ozzie is a young lady who loves the three P's: people, playtime, and peanut butter. Ozzie is enjoying life outside of the shelter where she can curl up on her dog bed with a nice chew toy, and run around in the yard with her dog friends. She came to the shelter as a recent mama, but is spayed now so her breeding days are done. This lovable girl has hyponotizing hazel eyes and loves to cuddle, although she's not always aware of her size. She's continuing to work on developing her good manners with her foster family and is eager to please! Ozzie loves other dogs but would do best with companions close to her size or larger. Ozzie will be a great, loyal companion for an active family who loves to laugh; she "talks" to other dogs while she's playing, does the moon walk, and likes to toss her toys in the air to play her own game of "fetch." Posted Breed: Miniature Pinscher / Mixed (short coat). Hello! My name is Jackson and I would love to meet you! I am seven years old and weigh about ten pounds. My absolute favorite place to be is on someone’s lap, so if you are looking for a cuddle bug, we might be a good match! I also like chewing on bones, finding a sunny spot on the floor and taking a snooze, and getting treats. But, really, my favorite thing is cuddling with the people I love. I love going in my crate and am house trained. I also went to school and know a bunch of commands and hand signals like wait, off, stay, and leave it. As you can tell, I’m a pretty smart guy! I have a canine foster brother and we get along well (although he tries to play just a little TOO much for me!), but I think I’d also be okay as the only dog in the house. My foster mom tells me that means I would get ALL the snuggle time, and that sounds pretty good to me! I love being outside, so if you have a fenced in yard, that would be awesome, but I’m also really good on a leash, so if not, that’s okay, too. I can be a little bit tentative in new surroundings and with new people, but with all the changes in my life, can you really blame me? My foster mom thinks I would do better in a home without little kids, as sudden movements can make me a little nervous and I might not know how to react. Have I convinced you that you need to meet me yet? After all, it is starting to get colder and I’m a really excellent lap warmer! Thank you for your interest in adopting a rescued pet! Posted Breed: Miniature Pinscher / Mixed. Hi everyone, I am Little D! I am guessed to be around 5 years old and I love pretty much everyone I meet. I am a bit wobbly on my feet at times, likely due to cerebellar hypoplasia, but it doesn't slow me down much. If I topple over, I get right back up and go, go, go! I would love to meet you! Cerebellar hypoplasia is often congenital and isn't typically a progressive problem. It just makes them walk like they have had one too many adult beverages, and shouldn't cause problems later in life. He is the life of the party, wherever he goes! He participated in the New Leash on Life Program at the women's prison and learned lots of great things there. He loves to cuddle with his foster family, and loves to go for walks and car rides! Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Mixed. Hi! My name is Beezy. If you like to unwind at the end of the day by snuggling on the couch and catching up on your favorite TV shows, I am the girl for you! I would love nothing more than to curl up in your lap or next to you. My second favorite activity is going on walks. I am house trained and leash trained, and my foster parents say I trot around the neighborhood like I own the place. I think that means they like my confidence and peppy attitude. I get along well with my canine foster sister, and I'm learning how to share toys instead of running off to hide them from her under the bed. She's being patient with me, and even lets me share the big dog bed with her! I don't love being in the crate when my foster parents are away, but a peanut butter-filled Kong helps me pass the time until they come back home. Despite my big girl attitude, I'm easily startled and nervous around new folks, and I would prefer to live in a quiet home without small children or cats. My favorite things to do include: burrowing under blankets, sleeping, and going for walks! My foster mom says that I am great on a leash and that I am a very smart and sweet boy. I love humans and saying hi to new people! I also like to hide and take naps in small hidden places, like under your bed, or in the back of your closet. I like small cozy spaces, so I'm pretty good in my crate if you need me to go in. I do tend to "sing" when you leave me, at least for a few minutes, just because I miss you, but then I calm down and go to sleep. I love to be held, and will even let you hold me like a baby!
