Posted Breed: Chinese Crested-Hairless (short coat). UPDATE: Her ear ablation surgery was a total success and she is feeling much better. MEET MONA (before/after pictures say it all...) This baby girl was rescued from a high-kill shelter in Dade County about a year and a half ago as one hot mess. We presume her to be about 7 years old (very hard to tell - her teeth are actually in pretty good condition...) She was a puppy mill mama dog, and when her litters diminished, they dumped her. Her skin looked like elephant hide, and her eyes and ears were nasty. She has been fully vetted; bathed, scraped, vaccinated, is being treated for heartworm and is living in a foster home with several other small dogs. She does require eye drops DAILY as she does have dry eye and she does suffer from occasional ear infections. She doesn't LIKE to be groomed, but she is getting better with the process. She is a Hairless Chinese Crested who has NEVER been cared for - until she came into our care. Her skin is 95% better now than it was when she came to us. She has been spayed, microchipped and has had 2 eye surgeries. She is very sweet - loves playing with her ball, and being near her human... and gets excited when she sees kids! -dog friendly & housebroken. Adoption fee $150

A.K.A. : A mongrel, mixed-breed dog
Overview: A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.

More About Mutt Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: Poodle (Miniature) (short coat). MEET FOXXY This baby girl was rescued from a high-kill shelter by a Good Sam... and has been placed in a foster home in Fort Lauderdale. We believe her to be have been a "breeding mama dog" who is a feisty, active 8 year old. She has since been spayed, brought up to date on vaccines and micro-chipped and has been given a clean bill of health from our Vet. She was just groomed and JUST visited our Vet to be brought up to date on vaccines. etc. Foster mom says she is real sweet - and loves to cuddle. But she can be a little bossy, so we are thinking she might be happiest in a home where she is the only dog. Not sure yet, maybe it depends on the other dog in the house. Adoption fee: $150 Please download an application from our website: www.gratefulpaws.org NOTE: Adoption/rehoming fees are applied towards the vet bill: exam, blood tests, vaccinations, fecal, worming, spay/neuter, dental if necessary, and a microchip. There is rarely anything left over, but if that happens, the monies get applied to the next or previous pet - who may have had to have an x-ray, be groomed or have a dental.

He is about 8 years YOUNG -- weighs 25 lbs. and LOVES his toys and to have his belly rubbed! He is a total sweetheart! He HAD a history of skin and ear issues, but now that he is on a better diet, he's looking pretty good! His coat is naturally a long wavy silky black (was shaved for skin treatment). He is in excellent health - no vision or mobility issues and is not on any meds or special food. He loves to be with people. Does not like to be confined or crated and will happily snooze on floor next to you. He gets along fabulously with other dogs - big and small. He can be vocal when it's time to eat, when he's excited or when he wants to play! He's a wanderer and will gladly explore a yard - usually comes back when he's called as I lure and reward him with food/treats :) He can be an escape artist and jump over small x-pens or look for an opening in a fence - a secure yard is a must! He is currently living in a foster home in the Acreages in WPB and with an approved application will make him available for a meet and greet! He was quickly adopted into a new home 7 months ago -- and we've just learned that it isn't working out - his human recently had a heart attack and Frankie has become very protective of his owner and starting trouble with the other dogs in the house. Since he was the newest addition to the family, Frankie is the one to leave. :( His ideal home would be where he is the ONLY dog. He is OK with other dogs when he is on his walks... or sitting by your feet at an outdoor restaurant, he just doesn't want to LIVE with one. He's about 5 years old, neutered, chipped, up to date on all vaccines, housebroken and loves people. What a personality...! Seven months ago he was at a healthy 64 lbs. but since then, he has gained a tremendous amount of weight (30 lbs.) and is now on a strict diet to get those excess pounds off him. He is back in our care and is living in a foster home in Fort Lauderdale but there is no reason why he can't lose those excess pounds in a new forever home. DOWNLOAD AN APPLICATION NOW! Breed: Mutt
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Young
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Spaniel / Mixed (medium coat). MEET CHARLIE--- Charlie was adopted from a high-kill shelter about a year ago -- but the home he went to was far more social and active than the life he'd been used to. Neither he or his human were happy, so she made the selfless decision to find a home for Charlie that is quieter where he won't be as stressed at new circumstances. Charlie bonds very closely with his owner, showing great affection whenever the owner is present. But he is apprehensive, barky and insecure when meeting new people. He gets stressed at new stuff - and he reacts by barking and threatening to "bite". He hasn't bitten yet and we watch him closely and don't place him in a position where he might! We have consulted a trainer and we are working on positive reinforcement when introduced to new people -- and... he has made progress. BUT he is still a work in progress and a patient dog savvy owner would be his ideal home. We have determined that he does BEST in a home with another dog or dogs--- He doesn't do as well (barks more) when he is the only child. He loves to be in your lap and loves to give kisses... He is 100% housebroken and is really a sweet little man with a couple quirks. eg. in the morning when it's time to get out of bed and got outside to go potty, he walks behind me and love-nips me in the butt! (so maybe I can walk faster?) He is a funny little dog. A strong calm, alpha owner (preferably would be best for this guy. He really is sweet and affectionate but we need to convince him that he is safe! He loves to play ball and brings it back!! He is about 3 years old - neutered, up to date on all vaccines - micro-chipped - a spaniel -- perhaps a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel mix, housebroken, does not mark - dog friendly (no cats and probably no kids). He is full grown at about 20 lbs. and really is a nice little guy (once he decides he likes you (generally takes 2-3 days -- and THEN he is your new BEST FRIEND!). He will be re-homed to the immediate area (Broward/Dade/Palm Beach counties) only. Re-homing fee: $200 DOWNLOAD OUR APPLICATION: www.gratefulpaws.org. He is probably about 5 years old - and full grown at 12 lbs. He is dog AND cat friendly, actually likes cats better than other dogs... walks well on a leash and is housebroken. He had his vet visit and it was reported that he is heartworm positive. NO BIGGIEs - it's not a death sentence because it IS treatable and once his treatment is complete, he will be as good as new!
