Posted Breed: Chinese Crested-Hairless (short coat). UPDATE: Her ear ablation surgery was a total success and she is feeling much better. MEET MONA (before/after pictures say it all...) This baby girl was rescued from a high-kill shelter in Dade County about a year and a half ago as one hot mess. We presume her to be about 7 years old (very hard to tell - her teeth are actually in pretty good condition...) She was a puppy mill mama dog, and when her litters diminished, they dumped her. Her skin looked like elephant hide, and her eyes and ears were nasty. She has been fully vetted; bathed, scraped, vaccinated, is being treated for heartworm and is living in a foster home with several other small dogs. She does require eye drops DAILY as she does have dry eye and she does suffer from occasional ear infections. She doesn't LIKE to be groomed, but she is getting better with the process. She is a Hairless Chinese Crested who has NEVER been cared for - until she came into our care. Her skin is 95% better now than it was when she came to us. She has been spayed, microchipped and has had 2 eye surgeries. She is very sweet - loves playing with her ball, and being near her human... and gets excited when she sees kids! -dog friendly & housebroken. Adoption fee $150

A.K.A. : A mongrel, mixed-breed dog
Overview: A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.

More About Mutt Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      STELLA BELLA...

      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Young
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: German Shepherd Dog / Mixed (medium coat). MEET STELLA BELLA... Through no fault of hers, this baby girl is an owner surrender - She is about a year old, and full grown at 30 lbs. She is a bit timid at first, but adjusts quickly once she knows she is safe. SHE IS DELIGHTFUL! She loves the interaction of other dogs -- and her ideal home would be with another dog in the home... and she loves to snuggle. Stella is nervous at "new" and would not do well in a highly active chaotic household. She is people and dog friendly, not sure about cats but she is leery of most men. She hardly barks - and is well behaved when left alone, so I've not been crating her. We recently took her to see our Ortho guy -- as her front legs are bowed... (?) Anyhow, our Vet feels it is a genetic condition and is not affecting her since she is not in pain and it is not affecting her running or walking... we will just keep an eye on her. However, she is pre-disposed to hip dysplasia which will end being a surgery in later years. She has been spayed and is up to date on all vaccines. and is waiting to go to her new forever home! Re-homing fee $250 DOWNLOAD OUR APPLICATION: www.gratefulpaws.org. Click on ADOPT - at the bottom of that page you will find our application. NOTE: Adoption/rehoming fees are applied towards the vet bill: Exam, blood tests, vaccinations, fecal, worming, spay/neuter, and microchip. There is rarely anything left over, but if that happens, the monies get applied to the next or previous pet - who may have had to have an x-ray, be groomed or have a dental.

Posted Breed: Terrier / Mixed (short coat). MEET HENRY This handsome guy was left in the yard for 5 days with no food, water or shelter when his owned moved. So one of our volunteers rescued him --- he is safe now and was thoroughly vetted this week. (Vaccines, blood tests, neuter, chip, etc.). He is about 8 months old and weighs about 55 lbs. He is a GOOF! Full of energy, dog friendly, crate trained, totally housebroken and loves everyone! Not sure about cats. And he might be too big and clumsy for small children. His ideal home would be with an active person/family who has time to spend and work with him AND tire him out! He thinks he is a lapdog! He loves being near his human. Adoption fee: $250 Please download an application from our website: www.gratefulpaws.org NOTE: Adoption/rehoming fees are applied towards the vet bill: exam, blood tests, vaccinations, fecal, worming, spay/neuter, dental if necessary, and a microchip. Posted Breed: West Highland White Terrier Westie / Mixed (short coat). This is "BEAN" - (Dog & cat friendly...) Picked up as a stray a couple weeks ago (no chip) and an owner hasn't surfaced. He's a wire-haired terrier of some flavor - Cairn - Westie? (we have no clue). He is probably about 5 years old - and full grown at 12 lbs. He is dog AND cat friendly, actually likes cats better than other dogs... walks well on a leash and is housebroken. He had his vet visit and it was reported that he is heartworm positive. NO BIGGIEs - it's not a death sentence because it IS treatable and once his treatment is complete, he will be as good as new! There is no reason he cannot be placed in a new forever home while he is being treated -- but the hitch is that he MUST be able to see our Vet in Broward County for his 2-3 treatments and follow-up visits - OUR DIME of course. (that's a full plate for almost anyone!), so Grateful Paws has been asked to find a new home for DeNiro. He is happy, healthy, great with CATS, other dogs, people and kids. He has been thoroughly vetted and has been micro-chipped. And he will be at our upcoming adoption events. CHARLIE

      verified

      rescue
      Breed: Mutt
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Young
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Spaniel / Mixed (medium coat). MEET CHARLIE--- Charlie was adopted from a high-kill shelter about a year ago -- but the home he went to was far more social and active than the life he'd been used to. Neither he or his human were happy, so she made the selfless decision to find a home for Charlie that is quieter where he won't be as stressed at new circumstances. Charlie bonds very closely with his owner, showing great affection whenever the owner is present. But he is apprehensive, barky and insecure when meeting new people. He gets stressed at new stuff - and he reacts by barking and threatening to "bite". He hasn't bitten yet and we watch him closely and don't place him in a position where he might! We have consulted a trainer and we are working on positive reinforcement when introduced to new people -- and... he has made some progress. BUT he is still a work in progress and a patient dog savvy owner would be his ideal home. We have determined that he does BEST in a home with another dog or dogs--- He doesn't do as well (barks more) when he is the only child. He loves to be in your lap and loves to give kisses... He is 100% housebroken and is really a sweet little man with a couple quirks. eg. in the morning when it's time to get out of bed and got outside to go potty, he walks behind me and love-nips me in the butt! (so maybe I can walk faster?) He is a funny little dog. A strong calm, alpha owner (preferably female) would be best for this guy. He really is sweet and affectionate but we need to convince him that he is safe! He loves to play ball and brings it back!! He is about 3 years old - neutered, up to date on all vaccines - micro-chipped - a spaniel -- perhaps a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel mix, housebroken, does not mark - dog friendly (no cats and probably no kids). He is full grown at about 20 lbs. and really is a nice little guy (once he decides he likes you (generally takes 2-3 days -- and THEN he is your new BEST FRIEND!). He will be re-homed to the immediate area (Broward/Dade/Palm Beach counties) only. Re-homing fee: $200 DOWNLOAD OUR APPLICATION: www.gratefulpaws.org.

He was picked up as a stray and was being cared for by folks who were not allowed to have a dog - so Grateful Paws was asked to find him a new forever home. He's neutered, vaccinated, blood tested and chipped now and he is simply DELIGHTFUL! A gentle guy - laid back... We figure he is about 8-9 years old, a St. Bernard/beagle/whatever mix - and in pretty good health for an elder! He is dog friendly, well behaved when left home alone, and just wants to be your companion. He has never been taught how to walk on a leash, so a fenced yard for potty breaks will be OK for him. A nominal adoption fee will apply $100. She is a BIG puppy - loves to get in your lap and give slobbery kisses. She is such a goof. She is about 6 years old and full grown at about 60 lbs. Well, actually she has gained a little bit of weight and is currently on a diet to get back down to 60 lbs.) She is up to date on shots, has been spayed and micro-chipped and is living in a foster home in Ft. Lauderdale. We enrolled her in a training class and her foster mom takes her on daily walks through the neighborhood. Housebroken, couch potato, crate trained, walks well on a leash -- GREAT COMPANION. She is simply delightful! Gets along very well with kids, including young squealing ones... and loves MOST other dogs (except small in-your-face types) but the introduction to the new dog must be gradual. She does not do well with dogs who try to be dominant over her -- OR -- with small dogs or cats of any size. She has a delightful personality and very deserving of a new loving forever home. Interested parties should email us for an application to adopt: info@gratefulpaws.org A nominal adoption fee of $150 will apply but the fee could be waived for the right home. NOTE: Adoption fees are applied towards the vet bill: exam, blood tests, vaccinations, fecal, worming, spay/neuter, and microchip.
