Posted Breed: Chinese Crested-Hairless (short coat). MEET MONA (before/after pictures say it all...) This baby girl was rescued from a high-kill shelter in Dade County about a year and a half ago as one hot mess. We presume her to be about 7 years old (very hard to tell - her teeth are actually in pretty good condition...) She was a puppy mill mama dog, and when her litters diminished, they dumped her. Her skin looked like elephant hide, and her eyes and ears were nasty. She has been fully vetted; bathed, scraped, vaccinated, is being treated for heartworm and is living in a foster home with several other small dogs. She does require eye drops DAILY as she does have dry eye and she does suffer from occasional ear infections. She doesn't LIKE to be groomed, but she is getting better with the process. She is a Hairless Chinese Crested who has NEVER been cared for - until she came into our care. Her skin is 95% better now than it was when she came to us. She has been spayed and microchipped and has had 2 eye surgeries. She is very sweet - loves playing with her ball, and being near her human... and gets excited when she sees kids! -dog friendly & housebroken. Adoption fee $150

A.K.A. : A mongrel, mixed-breed dog
Overview: A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.

More About Mutt Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

This baby girl sought shelter in a laundry room on a stormy day, emaciated and cowering next to the washing machine. She had just given birth, but no puppies were found. Grateful Paws has thoroughly vetted her, blood tested, vaccinated, spayed and micro-chipped her. She is in one of our foster homes and has adjusted very well. We are pretty sure she had never been inside a house - and had lived as a "yard dog". She has a sweet temperament, loves people – LOVES KIDS - and most dogs. She loves the dog park and has learned how to play and be very social. And.. she is crate trained. She is lovely. Loves to be leaning on you... and loves being the center of your attention. Email for an application: info@gratefulpaws.org NOTE: Adoption fees are applied towards the vet bill: Exam, blood tests, vaccinations, fecal, worming, spay/neuter, and microchip. There is rarely anything left over, but if that happens, the monies get applied to the next or previous pet - who may have had to have an x-ray, be groomed or have a dental.

Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat). ***COURTESY LISTING*** MEET COCOA (Check out her video!) This sweet little lady is an owner surrender - her human just don't have time for her, so she spends the neighborhood roaming the streets waiting for one of her doggy friends to open their door and let her in! She is about 4 years old, full grown at about 45 lbs., spayed, and very sweet and affectionate. She is gentle and all she wants is someone to love and pay attention to her. She gets along great with outside cats, but is a little too curious with inside cats (although we are pretty sure, it could be easily remedied with a little training). We'd really like to see her in a home who can appreciate this sweet gentle little lady. Rehoming fee: $150 Please email for an application: info@gratefulpaws.org

Posted Breed: Toy Fox Terrier / Mixed (short coat). This waif was picked up as a stray in Pembroke Pines and an owner never surfaced. She is a tiny little thing – 6 lbs. about 2 years old, a Toy Fox or Rat Terrier and adjusting well to her new foster home. She has seen our Vet and has been given her vaccines, worming and has just been spayed. We have learned that she is not comfortable with noisy kids, other dogs and “confusion”. She is doing best in a quiet environment where she can be the “Queen”. Her fear makes her a little nippy, but in a quiet environment, she will be just fine. If you or someone you know is interested in a small but feisty companion, please email for an application. Location: Fort Lauderdale, FL
Posted Breed: Black Labrador Retriever / Mixed (short coat). MEET LEXI-- (Check out her video) Yes - this is the dog who was SHOT in the leg and left for dead in Hollywood, FL. A Good Sam saw her and brought her to the hospital and Grateful Paws was asked to step up and try to help raise funds for her vet bill--AND-- find her a new forever home. SHE IS DOING GREAT! She is in a foster home with a couple other bully breeds and is happy, sweet and trying very hard to be better socialized. But she does like to play rough! She is now about a year old, still a puppy, playful and very people friendly. A basic obedience class with a trainer would be helpful... We believe she had been a "yard dog", so she is learning how to greet new dogs. Her leg has totally healed and she doesn't even walk with a limp! They saved her leg without surgery - with daily sedation and frequent bandage and cast changes. And we are looking for an ADOPTIVE home for her. Her ideal home would be where she could be the only dog - and with an physically active family who can tire her out. Because of her life as a yard-dog prior to coming into our care, she had not been socialized with other dogs as she should have been, so she is re-active when meeting other dogs. We are working on it that behavior - but for now, an only dog home would be best. If interested in adopting/fostering, please email for an application: info@gratefulpaws.org An adoption fee of $150 will apply. NOTE: Adoption fees are applied towards the vet bill: Exam, blood tests, vaccinations, fecal, worming, spay/neuter, and microchip. There is rarely anything left over, but if that happens, the monies get applied to the next or previous pet - who may have had to have an x-ray, be groomed or have a dental.

He was picked up as a stray and was being cared for by folks who were not allowed to have a dog - so Grateful Paws was asked to find him a new forever home. He's neutered, vaccinated, blood tested and chipped now and he is simply DELIGHTFUL! A gentle guy - laid back... We figure he is about 8-9 years old, a beagle/whatever mix - and in pretty good health! He is dog friendly, well behaved when left home alone, and just wants to be your companion. He has never been taught how to walk on a leash, so a fenced yard for potty breaks will be OK for him. A nominal adoption fee will apply $100. He is full grown at about 15 lbs. and sweet as can be. He is dog friendly, crate trained and wants to be on your lap! He came into our care a month ago WHAT A DOLL! His owners were moving and were not able to take him --- so they asked Grateful Paws to find him a new forever home. He is delightful! What a snuggle bunny. Loves to hunt lizards and sleep behind your knees beneath the covers! Sweet little man. Rides well in the car – and always wants to be near you! His humans are moving out of the country in a couple weeks and are not able to take him. (And unless we can come up with a foster home for him, will likely end up at a kill-shelter). He is dog and cat friendly -- loves people and is totally housebroken. He is not neutered but that will be arranged (our dime) and he will be UTD on vaccines. I am cross posting for someone who doesn't want Hotch to end up at a kill shelter. He is a good boy & to no fault of his own is losing his family. He is located in Miami, Fl. Will you be his hero?? If you can't foster or adopt, please share! Her rescuer managed to convince her owner that living chained to a tree wasn't the best life for a dog as sweet as she is, so he turned the dog over to her. She's been spayed and vaccinated -- and is being cared for, but sadly, was not socialized with other dogs as she should have been. SHE LOVES PEOPLE... but doesn't always do well when she meets another dog while walking. The best home for this dog would be with someone who is familiar with bully breeds and basic training commands. Please email Loren for an application: whisperlr6@aol

She is a BIG puppy - loves to get in your lap and give slobbery kisses. She is such a goof. She is about 6 years old and full grown at about 60 lbs. Well, actually she has gained a little bit of weight and is currently on a diet to get back down to 60 lbs.) She is up to date on shots, has been spayed and micro-chipped and is living in a foster home in Ft. Lauderdale. We enrolled her in a training class and her foster mom takes her on daily walks through the neighborhood. Housebroken, couch potato, crate trained, walks well on a leash -- GREAT COMPANION. She is simply delightful! Gets along very well with kids, including young squealing ones... and loves MOST other dogs (except small in-your-face types) but the introduction to the new dog must be gradual. She does not do well with dogs who try to be dominant over her -- OR -- with small dogs or cats of any size. She has a delightful personality and very deserving of a new loving forever home. Interested parties should email us for an application to adopt: info@gratefulpaws.org A nominal adoption fee of $150 will apply but the fee could be waived for the right home.
