Posted Breed: Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Jenny came to us a year ago with her 3 puppies. She was heartworm positive and in sad shape. UPDATE*** 4/12/16 ~ Jenny was HW+ when she came to us, but she tested HEARTWORM NEGATIVE today, the slow kill method works well! Jenny is very sweet and friendly with everyone she meets. She is very particular about the other dogs she likes so she would would be best as an only dog with a careful, aware owner since she is picky about other pets. She loves to run in the yard and play fetch. She is a mellow sweet dog that loves hugs and kisses and is a kennel favorite.

A.K.A. : A mongrel, mixed-breed dog
Overview: A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.

More About Mutt Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: Catahoula Leopard Dog (short coat). Foster Home Update: Rose is one of the sweetest dogs I've ever fostered. She absolutely loves everyone she meets and is a great companion. She is extremely versatile meaning she will lay inside with you all day or go outside on adventures and be perfectly happy doing either. She is crate trained, house trained and knows all basic commands. She is not destructive in any way. She is getting better on walks, and is learning not to pull as much. ROSE NEEDS TO BE THE ONLY PET IN THE HOME. She DOES NOT like cats. She is AMAZING WITH CHILDREN, she loves them all. She loves being outside and off leash with a big fenced in area to explore. She comes when called and overall is an easy dog to take care of. She will jump right up in your car when you open the door, but during the car ride she gets a little anxious and starts panting. If you open the windows, it helps her relax a little bit. I also brought her around horses and she doesn't care for them. Please foster or adopt this sweet girl and give her the forever home she deserves! -------------------------------------------------- Rose is a beautiful catahoula. She surrendered to a high kill shelter, where we rescued her from. We have hopes of giving her a second chance at life with a wonderful family. We feel she would do best as the only pet in the family. She is good with children over the age of 10. She is housetrained.

      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Adult
      Location: Sanford, FL
Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Foster Update: 2-21-17 Bryn spend the night at my house and did good with all of her other dogs at home. She is a very misunderstood dog. She is very well behaved in the house, and enjoys car rides. We are a little concerned with how she would react with the other dogs but, she acclimates well to calm dogs. -Judy Bryn and her babies were pulled from a high kill shelter. Now, all her babies have been adopted and she is patiently waiting her turn. Bryn is very loyal, sweet, and affectionate. She would prefer to be the only dog in her new household. However, she does get along with some dogs. She gets so excited to play, that some dogs do not react well to her. She went out with a group of dogs at a UCF event and goes out with another dog at the shelter. Bryn has a high energy level and would benfit from being with an active person. She loves to play ball in the yard and run around. Bryn is heartworm positive but that is should not deter anyone from adopting Bryn or any dog. We will supply you with information on the slow kill method, which is the treatment that Pet Rescue By Judy uses, and also send you home with six months of heartworm medication.

      Breed: Boxer
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Adult
      Location: Sanford, FL
Posted Breed: Boxer / Labrador Retriever (short coat). Bella was rescued from a high kill shelter. Bella was known as a "frequent flyer" because the staff at the previous shelter had brought her in as a stray 4 times since 2013. Each time she was in poor condition. Luckily, we were able to pull her our of the high-kill shelter and bring her to our rescue. Bella is a darling dog and deserves a loving family and a fresh start in life. She is crate-trained, enjoys going for walks, and is very playful. When you say her name, she gets so excited. She recently had to have part of her tail amputated, because she had what is called "happy tail". We encourage doing our "Dog 4 A Day" program with Bella to give you an opportunity to get to know the sweet girl that she truly is and pease don't forget to fill out an application online. * We do not advise for Bella to be around other dogs. She thrives around people and is very sweet.

      Breed: Mastiff
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: Sanford, FL
Posted Breed: Mastiff (short coat). Titan was rescued from a high kill shelter at the request of the staff to save this wonderful loving dog. He loves belly rub, car rides , playing with the dogs in the backyard, We believe Titan is a mastiff blend small in size about 60 lbs. He has a slight limp due to a separation in between the disc in his ankle. He won't be running a 5k, but he loves to take walks and play with other dogs! Titan is heartworm positive, but don't let that stop you from adopting a fantastic dog. PRBJ treats all our heartworm positive dogs with the effective "slow kill" method. At the time of adoption, we will provide Titan with a six- month supply of heartworm preventative medication and literature regarding the slow kill method we use. March 1st update from Titan's foster: Titan is a wonderful dog who is as handsome on the inside as he is the out. In the two months we have fostered him, he has endeared himself to our whole family. He gets along extremely well with our six-year-old rescue dog and has never shown an ounce of aggression towards anyone. He loves walks and playing in the backyard (he will spend all day out there if you will let him.). He is also a great snuggle bunny, who loves to lie beside you while you are watching tv or sleeping. Titan will be best suited in a home that has another dog and fenced backyard as he loves to explore, play and run around. Also, he gets nervous around strangers but seems to relax after awhile. He is a beautiful loving dog that deserves someone to love him back! He is housebroken and we have had no problem leaving him to have run of the house when we leave. (Just think - you will avoid the potty training and teething stage of a puppy!) I had the pleasure of Titan's company yesterday at Bark Happy in downtown Sanford, as a volunteer for PRBJ. It was our first meeting, and he seemed a little unsure when I asked him to get into my car, but quickly followed my request. He rode very well watching out the window as we traveled. The event was hot (at times) and very crowded with many people and dogs. He had a happy curiosity and was so well-behaved while waves of people came and went. He sat quietly and took it all in. At some point, other dogs started barking and he paid them no mind. This is one special dog who will be a wonderful addition to your home.

      Zeus the one...

      rescue
      Breed: Chihuahua
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Senior
      Location: Sanford, FL
Posted Breed: Chihuahua (short coat). 08/12/2016: Zeus was returned back to Pet Rescue by Judy. His poor owner cried so much returning him. His neighbors in his building told him it was cruel to keep him alive and he should be forced to put Zeus down. So to avoid having Zeus put down he gave him back to us. Let me tell you a little about Zeus. He is housetrained, loves to sit in your lap and cuddle with you to stay warm. Won't you please open your heart and home to help Zeus have a home again. February foster update: Zeus had some bloodwork done in January due to some issues he was having and is now on a special prescription diet. He is not able to have any other food or treats but is doing well with his new food. He is still adjusting to his loss of vision and appears to have none left in his remaining eye though I do believe he may see some shadow/light depending on the surroundings. I use the word "touch" when I am going to touch him and "lift" when I am going to pick him up. That helps somewhat with his startling but he tends to get "lost" in the yard as he loses his bearings frequently. He does like a good neck scratching after his eye drops. He does tend to get up pre-dawn and bark to let you know he needs to go out and that he is hungry. I have been feeding him a small amount and then he will go back to bed for a couple of hours. December foster update : Unfortunately Zeus' left eye worsened significantly and had to be removed a couple of weeks ago. His stitches are out and he is healing well and out of pain thankfully. It is now obvious that he sees very little out of his right eye and so he is having to do quite a bit of adjusting to his new world. He still gets 2 different eye drops in his remaining eye and goes to the doggy eye specialist and this will continue for the rest of his life. For his safety, he will need a home without an inground pool or stairs and one that has a fence. September foster update: Zeus was examined by an eye specialist and diagnosed with Endothelial Dystrophy in both eyes and possible Glaucoma in his left eye. He is on multiple eye drops at this time, some 4x daily, and will continue on at least some of them for the rest of his life. He does well getting around the house and his ear and skin infections are cleared up He does need medicated baths at least once or twice weekly. He spends much of the time sleeping and he eats mainly dry food. He loves to be petted and will nudge you for more when you stop. Zeus loves to lay in the sun and will go outside and just throw himself down on the driveway in the sun. We have to make him come in so he doesn't get overheated! We have multiple dog crates and beds around the house and he seems to like them all! He is cautious while getting around but finds his way where he wants to go! Poor Zeus was left outside our building. Judy got to work at 5:30 a.m. and there he was left in a carrier crate. He had nails that were so overgrown he couldn't even walk and cataracts in both eyes. Judy sent him to the vet to get checked out. He is not old our vet said about 5. He will melt your heart. He is so sweet and quiet and loves to get taken outside for a walk. If you want a lap dog this is the one. He is ready for adoption...Honestly he is such a great dog that I am shocked that he has not been adopted! Due to his limited eyesight, Zeus would do best in a home without an inground pool or flights of stairs. Also, since he startles easily, he would do best with only older, very considerate children.

      Breed: Mutt
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Adult
      Location: Sanford, FL
Posted Breed: Hound (short coat). Annabelle is a very loving dog and all she wants is love and hugs! She did her job as a mom very well and is ready now for a home of her own and to be loved. Annabelle is heartworm positive, and at Pet Rescue by Judy we use the slow kill method. Literature will be supplied at the time of adoption, along with 6 months of heartworm prevention. If you have any questions about HW+ dogs, please ask as the staff would be happy to assist you. More about Annabelle: Leash Manners – Annabelle is a strong, energetic dog who enjoys going for walks. Socialization - Per Annabelle's previous foster, she is okay with most dogs, but would need to be properly introduced to new dogs. She has gone out in a few supervised play groups with other dogs at the shelter and interacted well with them. Energy Level and Exercise – Annabelle is an active dog. She loves to run around in the yard and go on walks. Daily Structure and Schedule – At the shelter, we feed the dogs twice a day and this is what Annabelle is used to. She goes out to play in the yard in the morning and in late afternoon. Also, our volunteers are frequently taking her out for walks in between. Confidence Level – Annabelle is a friendly dog. From her past experiences, she is slightly apprehensive about men. She would need to be properly introduced to males so that she is familiar with the men in the home. She prefers females because she feels confident around them and bonds with women the most. Over the last few months, she has been around more of our male staff members and volunteers and she has never acted aggressively towards them. This goes to show, that with patience, love Annabelle can rebuild her trust of men~ Aren’t animals amazingly resilient and forgiving! Obedience Training – Annabelle knows basic commands and listens well. She is crate and house trained. Like many dogs, she will let you know when she needs to go out. Ideal Home - An ideal home for Annabelle would be one with an active family. As stated above, she bonds best with women, and if there are men in the household, she would need to be properly introduced to them and allowed the time to gets used to the men around her and trust them. She does not need to have another canine companion as she gets a lot of enjoyment from being around her people. However, if the potential family has another dog, Annabelle would need to be introduced to them to ensure that everyone gets along. We suggest a home with older/no children to be on the safe side. She previously belonged to a family who used her as a hog dog - so whoever adopts her cannot own pigs.

Posted Breed: Terrier (short coat). London and his sister, Camden (Hazy) were adopted together as puppies. Their owner is moving out of the country and has to unfortunately return them to us. London and his sister are great dogs! They love other dogs and going to the dog park. They are housetrained and love to cuddle. Since London and Camden have been together since they were born, we would love to find a home where they can stay together. Bluebell and her 8 babies were rescued from a high kill shelter right before their time was up. They were initially brought to animal control after being taken from a hoarder. Foster Update: Asher is a cute grey and white boy with striking blue eyes. He is the clown of the litter and loves to jump and play. He has a teddy bear personality and loves to sit and listen while you talk to him. Kisses and tail wagging are a plenty with this little man! Asher is very patient and always waits his turn when its time to go out or eat. He gets along well with dogs of all sizes and is particularly careful and sweet around my 17 year old chihuahua. He is doing fantastic with going outside to potty and will be easy to finish housebreaking. Love and toys are paramount for this little guy! Asher was a pleasure to foster and will be missed greatly! The Terrier is a good-natured, amusing, extremely loyal and affectionate family pet, which is good with children and adults. The American Pit Bull Terrier has a strong pleasure to please. The APBT has evoked more human emotional, rational, and irrational response than any other breed that exists today. By no means are these dogs people-haters or people-eaters. Their natural aggressive tendencies are toward other dogs and animals, not people. However if they are properly socialized with a firm, but calm, confident, consistent pack leader, they will not even be aggressive with them. The American Pit Bull Terrier is a good-natured, amusing, extremely loyal and affectionate family pet, which is good with children and adults. Almost always obedient, it is always eager to please its master. It is an extremely courageous and intelligent guard dog that is very full of vitality. Highly protective of his owners and the owner's property, it will fight an enemy to the death. It is usually very friendly, but has an uncanny ability to know when it needs to protect and when everything is okay. The American Pit Bull Terrier can be willful with meek owners and needs a firm hand. They are generally okay with other pets if they are raised with them from puppy hood. They are very friendly, but not recommended for most people, because most people do not understand how to properly raise and treat a dog. Problems arise when one does not understands dog psychology, seeing the dog as having human emotions, and ends up with a dog who thinks he is the boss of the house. For a smaller, not as powerful dog, people can sometimes get away with this, however, for a powerful breed, one really needs to understand and follow this concept of keeping a dog. Excellent with children in the family, they have a high pain tolerance and will happily put up with rough child play. As with any breed, they should not be left alone with unfamiliar children. Are strong and generally weigh between 40 and 70 lbs. They have a life expectancy of about 12 - 14 years
