Posted Breed: Terrier (short coat). Weston was found tied up outside after one of the foster's tenants moved out; he lived his life tied up outside. Foster Update: Weston is good on a leash, although he sometimes is headstrong when he sees something he wants to explore. He's great around other dogs. I have another rescue dog living with him and they play and chase each other around the house. When they first met they were barking and playing rough with each other but it was their way of saying hello. Weston needs a yard and lots of chew toys. Keep anything dangerous out of reach because he likes to explore and chew when he's bored. He has a lot of energy since he has experienced freedom from being leash bound most of his life. I walk him in the morning and evening where he's pretty much trained to go outside. He has a nice schedule. Being able to go inside and outside through a doggie door would be ideal. I feed him very high-quality kibble that he loves. He knows how to sit when told. He's very affectionate, even to new people. He will jump on you and lick you and try to sit in your lap. When he wants to go outside he will hum and bark to let you know he's bored, let's go for a walk or he needs to use the bathroom. He needs an active family since he's not a couch potato type dog. Weston is a great dog that would be great with other same size or larger dogs. Great personality and very friendly.

A.K.A. : A mongrel, mixed-breed dog
Overview: A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.

More About Mutt Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Smoky*F*

      verified

      rescue
      Breed: Chihuahua
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Senior
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Chihuahua (short coat). Adoption Fee: 100.00. Smoky was surrendered to PRBJ because his owners cannot take care of him anymore. He is very nervous right now. He is shy and takes a little to warm up to you. He likes to be held and get attention. We've been fostering Smoky for a week now. He is a very frightened little guy and will need a lot of time, patience and trust. Movement around him needs to be slow and gentle and he responds best if you are on his level at first. He has bonded with me (foster mom) the most because I am around the most. He will let my husband hold him sometimes but you can just feel the fear in his body language. He must be on a leash outside as I think he would run out of fear. He does mark in the house so I have been leaving a belly band on him during the day. He is crated at night and I take it off then as he does not mark in his crate.

      Hypno

      Breed: Chinese Shar-Pei-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Chinese Shar-Pei / Mixed (short coat). Adoption Fee: 100.00. Hypno has been with us since January, he was owner surrendered. His owners wife did not want a dog around. He just needs someone to have time and patience and supply him with love. Hypno would do best in a home with no small dogs or cats. He is housetrained. Our kennel staff feel's that Hypno would get along better with larger female dog. At the time of the meet we would always have you bring your dog in so we can all observe the two dogs together. He is also very playful. When we first got Hypno in he went to our vet, Animal Hospital at Vista Lakes and had Entropian Eye Surgery. Entropion is an abnormality of the eyelids in which the eyelid "rolls" inward. This inward rolling often causes the hair on the surface of the eyelid to rub against the cornea (outer part of the eyeball) resulting in pain, corneal ulcersor corneal erosions. Since his surgery Hypno has no recurrance and his eyes are great. If you are interested in trying Hypno please put a dog 4 a day application in. You won't regret it.

      Breed: Siberian Husky-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Young
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Siberian Husky / Mixed (medium coat). Adoption Fee: 100.00. Merlin is growing up at the shelter. He would benefit greatly in a home with a pool, big backyard to run around in. He really is a great misunderstood dog. Please read his dog 4 a day stories. Please, Merlin still has hopes of a family coming to take him home... New Dog 4 a Day outing: HERE IS WHAT SIDNEY, TAYLOR & MASON HAD TO SAY ABOUT HIM...."Merlin was so much fun to have for the day! He enjoyed playing in the water and relaxing on rafts. Merlin loved to play fetch, and never failed to retrieve a ball. He loved to go on walks, and was very excited to be outside. Merlin did pull a lot on his leash, so he needs some training to help him stop pulling. However, his pulling was very useful for skateboard rides. He loved to pull us around on a skateboard! Merlin should be kept in a home that has lots of space for him to run around, and a family who is willing to exercise him frequently. He never begged for food, or try to grab food off of our table. Merlin was also very good with our small Pomeranian. Overall, Merlin was a fun and loving dog." July 2nd Dog 4 a Day update - scroll down for pictures : Merlin was a joy to have. He was very calm for the most part, especially in the car. He was not lazy, however, as he enjoyed playing fetch outside and he wouldn’t need a big yard. He also loved to be around the water and liked swimming in the pool. When we were introducing him to our pool, Merlin would stick his face under water in order to try to find the next step into the water. He also enjoyed playing with the hose. When we took him for a walk, however, he pulled on his leash with a lot of force. Though he would need training for walking on a leash, Merlin never barked once while we had him. Overall, he loved to play and was very energetic, but he also didn’t mind taking breaks to rest. Merlin got to go out for a Dog 4 A Day and had a great time - here is what they had to say about him. "Merlin is a very energetic dog. A sweetheart from the start, he happily greeted us and would cuddle up in the car rides to and from our destination. He has a little trouble understanding his size and would assume the role of lap dog but it adds to his sweetness. He is FULL of energy and requires someone who shares a love for some outdoor time ! Great to run and play with, he will pace you for the most part. At times he can become a little curious in nearby distractions while walking, but never barked or growled. He was happy to meet new canine friends, big and small! Overall Merlin is a big cute baby who will certainly bring joy to his next home whoever should be so lucky!!! Thank you for letting us take him out!" This little cutie is full of puppy love and energy. He is a chewer which is normal since he is still so young. He will need manners training. Merlin needs an experienced alpha breed owner/family who is active due to all the puppy energy he has. UPDATE 2/12/2017: Merlin was returned to the shelter because he has a lot of energy. He is just so excited about being around people. Per his last owner, he is very smart and eager to please. He is potty trained, walks well on a short leash, and has good house manners. While he is still a chewer, he stops once he is given a toy or bone. They did not have him around other dogs, but he plays in the yard with another dog at the shelter. Merlin is still awaiting his forever home. If you would like too meet Merlin, come visit him at the shelter and submit an adoption application! Merlin is also available for Dog for a Day with an approved application.

Posted Breed: Boxer / Labrador Retriever (short coat). Adoption Fee: 100.00. Bella is a sweet girl and would hope that you take her out for Dog 4 A Day. Our Bella was rescued from a high kill shelter and was known as a "frequent flyer", because the staff at a previous shelter had brought her in 4 times as a stray since 2013, each time being in worse condition than the last. Bella was lucky enough to be rescued from being put down. This sweet girl is crate-trained, playful, and enjoys going for walks. She absolutely adores people but will do best as the only dog in the house. We encourage you to fill out an application for our Dog 4 A Day program to see if this ray of sunshine fits in with your lifestyle. Bella is a very loving dog and hopes to find a forever family that will give her all the attention she deserves!

Posted Breed: Shepherd / Boxer / Mixed (short coat). Adoption Fee: 100.00. Spartacus, formerly known as Wembley was returned to PRBJ. This poor babies owner passed away and now we have been trying to find the perfect home for him. His previous owners said he is ok with cat's, but we can retest him if needed as for other dogs, when he goes out in a playgroup he basically stays on his own, but again, previous owner said he was fine with other dogs. Spartacus would like you to know that he does enjoy a bath, going on walks, enjoys all types of toys, enjoys cuddling, he does know some tricks and he is housetrained. Since we have had him we noticed he does not care to be crated. Outside of his crate he is an amazing dog. This beautiful dog is avaliable to do Dog 4 a day and he is ready for adoption. He is due for a permanent home.

      Breed: Chipin
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Miniature Pinscher / Mixed (short coat). Adoption Fee: 250.00. Simba is a sweet little dog. He was abandoned and a neighbor surrendered him to Pet Rescue by Judy. Simba came to us with scars on his body, Judy took him to the vet and they suspect he had a bad skin condition that was never treated. He has healed beautifully, but will have the scars from this neglect. At first Simba will be cautious meeting you but once he feels safe he will kiss you forever. He goes in a playgroup with our other dogs and likes to play, go on walks and it crate/housetrained. Please put an application in . Simba is up to date on all shots, neutered and microchipped. June Foster update: Simba is a delightful little guy and is extremely smart and curious! He loves to play, both with other dogs and people, and loves toys, especially his kong wubba toy. He also likes to chew on bones such as nylabones or marrow bones. He can get a little protective with the marrow type bones so needs to be separated from other dogs when he has those. He is crate trained and we do put him in his crate for meal times and if we are going somewhere but other than that he is loose. He can be a barker so probably would not be a good choice if you live in an apartment. He walks well on the leash and we have taken him for short swims in our pool. He also can climb over baby gates or out of puppy pens if he wants to and definitely needs to know his boundaries or you might find him walking on your coffee table or shelves. He is very agile.

      Zeus the one...

      verified

      rescue
      Breed: Chihuahua
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Senior
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Chihuahua (short coat). Adoption Fee: 60.00. Let me tell you a little about Zeus. He is housetrained, loves to sit in your lap and cuddle with you to stay warm. Won't you please open your heart and home to help Zeus have a home again. June 2017 foster update : Zeus is up to a good weight and is a content boy. We have found that giving him a "snack" after he has been out for the night and had his eyedrops, is helping him sleep through the night. We also have him gated in the laundry room at night and he seems to know that means it is bedtime. He has no eyesight and is very cautious walking around. He likes to be held sometimes but not for long periods. We have dog beds all over the house and he has a couple of favorites he moves between. He barks if he wants/needs something - you get to figure out what it is! It could mean he needs to go out, he wants water, he wants to move to a different location or he is hungry! He does need to be closely supervised in the yard due to his eyesight and also as he is interested in mushrooms (and his nose works very well!) February 2017 foster update: Zeus had some bloodwork done in January due to some issues he was having and is now on a special prescription diet. He is not able to have any other food or treats but is doing well with his new food. He is still adjusting to his loss of vision and appears to have none left in his remaining eye though I do believe he may see some shadow/light depending on the surroundings. I use the word "touch" when I am going to touch him and "lift" when I am going to pick him up. That helps somewhat with his startling but he tends to get "lost" in the yard as he loses his bearings frequently. He does like a good neck scratching after his eye drops. He does tend to get up pre-dawn and bark to let you know he needs to go out and that he is hungry. I have been feeding him a small amount and then he will go back to bed for a couple of hours. December 2016 foster update : Unfortunately Zeus' left eye worsened significantly and had to be removed a couple of weeks ago. His stitches are out and he is healing well and out of pain thankfully. It is now obvious that he sees very little out of his right eye and so he is having to do quite a bit of adjusting to his new world. He still gets 2 different eye drops in his remaining eye and goes to the doggy eye specialist and this will continue for the rest of his life. For his safety, he will need a home without an inground pool or stairs and one that has a fence. September foster update: Zeus was examined by an eye specialist and diagnosed with Endothelial Dystrophy in both eyes and possible Glaucoma in his left eye. He is on multiple eye drops at this time, some 4x daily, and will continue on at least some of them for the rest of his life. He does well getting around the house and his ear and skin infections are cleared up He does need medicated baths at least once or twice weekly. He spends much of the time sleeping and he eats mainly dry food. He loves to be petted and will nudge you for more when you stop. Zeus loves to lay in the sun and will go outside and just throw himself down on the driveway in the sun. We have to make him come in so he doesn't get overheated! We have multiple dog crates and beds around the house and he seems to like them all! He is cautious while getting around but finds his way where he wants to go! Poor Zeus was left outside our building. Judy got to work at 5:30 a.m. and there he was left in a carrier crate. He had nails that were so overgrown he couldn't even walk and cataracts in both eyes. Judy sent him to the vet to get checked out. He is not old our vet said about 5. He will melt your heart. He is so sweet and quiet and loves to get taken outside for a walk. If you want a lap dog this is the one. He is ready for adoption...Honestly he is such a great dog that I am shocked that he has not been adopted! Due to his limited eyesight, Zeus would do best in a home without an inground pool or flights of stairs. Also, since he startles easily, he would do best with only older, very considerate children .

      Nala

      verified

      rescue
      Breed: Labrador Retriever
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Terrier (short coat). We have evaluated her and found Nala to be loving and sweet. She will get protective of her owner. Whoever in the home takes care of her the most she will bond with the most, because of that we have decided that Nala will do best in a one owner home. She will need training to establish boundries and we feel with that she will make a fantastic dog. 1/3/2017 foster update: For an experienced dog owner, Nala's behavior is not a significant issue. It's just a matter of her getting used to her new surroundings and all the new people. Over the weekend, my son, daughter and grandsons were all here and obviously we were very cautious with Nala around new people. Everything went fine and no issues occurred. New owner(s) need know that she is a young, energetic dog that needs some strength to control. If it was only me to consider, I would keep Nala as she and I get along just fine! However, she is too strong for my wife. I hate to have to have to return Nala because she and I have become very attached to each other in a short period of time. Keeping her in an area that is segregated from the rest of the house so we have total control has been a positive situation for Nala as she understands her boundaries and who is in control. It has been a great week to have her in our home and I wish we could have kept her longer. She is a great dog for an alpha owner(s) willing to put in the time and effort. 12/23/2017 foster update: Nala is in our home: consisting of 1 senior male and 1 senior female. She is doing well with me, the adult male, but we are being cautious with my wife and visitors. We keep Nala's crate on our lanai which we have opened up to the pool area so she can roam freely in that area except at bed time. This morning, my wife was entering the main part of the house and Nala wanted to go with her. My wife blocked her and Nala tried to nip her. Nothing serious but we are being cautious. Nala was not eating on a regular basis yet, and I assume she was not comfortable yet with her new surroundings. Today, I gave her a bit of canned food first....she gobbled it down...and then she ate her dry food. Seems to be a good plan!
