Posted Breed: Terrier (short coat). Weston was found tied up outside after one of the foster's tenants moved out; he lived his life tied up outside. Foster Update: Weston is good on a leash, although he sometimes is headstrong when he sees something he wants to explore. He's great around other dogs. I have another rescue dog living with him and they play and chase each other around the house. When they first met they were barking and playing rough with each other but it was their way of saying hello. Weston needs a yard and lots of chew toys. Keep anything dangerous out of reach because he likes to explore and chew when he's bored. He has a lot of energy since he has experienced freedom from being leash bound most of his life. I walk him in the morning and evening where he's pretty much trained to go outside. He has a nice schedule. Being able to go inside and outside through a doggie door would be ideal. I feed him very high-quality kibble that he loves. He knows how to sit when told. He's very affectionate, even to new people. He will jump on you and lick you and try to sit in your lap. When he wants to go outside he will hum and bark to let you know he's bored, let's go for a walk or he needs to use the bathroom. He needs an active family since he's not a couch potato type dog. Weston is a great dog that would be great with other same size or larger dogs. Great personality and very friendly.

A.K.A. : A mongrel, mixed-breed dog
Overview: A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.

More About Mutt Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Nala

      verified

      rescue
      Breed: Basenji
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Basenji / Labrador Retriever (short coat). Adoption Fee: 150.00. We have evaluated her and found Nala to be loving and sweet. She will get protective of her owner. Whoever in the home takes care of her the most she will bond with the most, because of that we have decided that Nala will do best in a one owner home. She will need training to establish boundries and we feel with that she will make a fantastic dog. 1/3/2017 foster update: For an experienced dog owner, Nala's behavior is not a significant issue. It's just a matter of her getting used to her new surroundings and all the new people. Over the weekend, my son, daughter and grandsons were all here and obviously we were very cautious with Nala around new people. Everything went fine and no issues occurred. New owner(s) need know that she is a young, energetic dog that needs some strength to control. If it was only me to consider, I would keep Nala as she and I get along just fine! However, she is too strong for my wife. I hate to have to have to return Nala because she and I have become very attached to each other in a short period of time. Keeping her in an area that is segregated from the rest of the house so we have total control has been a positive situation for Nala as she understands her boundaries and who is in control. It has been a great week to have her in our home and I wish we could have kept her longer. She is a great dog for an alpha owner(s) willing to put in the time and effort. 12/23/2017 foster update: Nala is in our home: consisting of 1 senior male and 1 senior female. She is doing well with me, the adult male, but we are being cautious with my wife and visitors. We keep Nala's crate on our lanai which we have opened up to the pool area so she can roam freely in that area except at bed time. This morning, my wife was entering the main part of the house and Nala wanted to go with her. My wife blocked her and Nala tried to nip her. Nothing serious but we are being cautious. Nala was not eating on a regular basis yet, and I assume she was not comfortable yet with her new surroundings. Today, I gave her a bit of canned food first....she gobbled it down...and then she ate her dry food. Seems to be a good plan!

      Breed: Boxer-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Shepherd / Boxer / Mixed (short coat). Adoption Fee: 100.00. Spartacus, formerly known as Wembley was returned to PRBJ. This poor babies owner passed away and now we have been trying to find the perfect home for him. His previous owners said he is ok with cat's, but we can retest him if needed as for other dogs, when he goes out in a playgroup he basically stays on his own, but again, previous owner said he was fine with other dogs. Spartacus would like you to know that he does enjoy a bath, going on walks, enjoys all types of toys, enjoys cuddling, he does know some tricks and he is housetrained. Since we have had him we noticed he does not care to be crated. Outside of his crate he is an amazing dog. This beautiful dog is avaliable to do Dog 4 a day and he is ready for adoption. He is due for a permanent home.

      Tank *F* new...

      rescue
      Breed: American Bulldog-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: American Bulldog / Mixed (short coat). Adoption Fee: 100.00. Tank is a big bundle of joy who loves to play with balls, squeaky toys, and go swimming at the beach. He finds enjoyment in chasing his own shadow and a laser light, taking car rides, and snuggling with you under the covers. Thanks to the Casselberry police, this loveable dog was rescued from life on the streets. Because of his big personality he may need minimal leash training. Look at that face - how can anyone resist this beautiful dog who loves everyone! Please come to PRBJ and meet this beautiful and friendly dog! Foster Update: Hi Judy, Tank here..... I like this foster thing. The lady human took me to her big kennel. Lady human calls the place home. Whatever it is, I like it! The ground inside is nice and cool to spread out and lay down on. Lady human grumbles that I am better at the splits than her (see photo). Judy, what is the splits?...... There is a grassy area outside with lots of small moving toys. Lady human calls them lizards. I call them lickable. I mean likeable. Okay, both..... I am currently training lady human to take me on long walks. She says we are getting the 2 year old energy out. She also says we are beginning to train for a Marathon. Judy, what is a marathon?....... In the meantime, tell the other animals at the shelter hi for me. This foster dog is out!..... Tank's ! Dog 4 A Day Updates: "Tank was such a great dog, with a big personality. He loved to run around and explore in the bushes. He is a big fan of lizards and loves to chase his own shadow. Tank is a very active dog. He enjoyed playing fetch and would do well in a big yard to run around in. Tank was very comfortable by the pool and loved to relax on rafts. When we took him on walks, he was very excited which resulted in pulling. Tank eventually calmed down, but still needs some training. Tank was a great “big dog” to have, however he did drool and shed. Overall, he was a dog with many quirks and endless energy." "Tank when out for a Dog for a Day and had a great time. Tank is a big, energetic, and loving goofball! He has a lot of energy but loves to lay down and cuddle too. He's great with new people and dogs, walks very well on a leash, and did not bark once! He loves, loves, LOVES playing with his shadow and it will keep him occupied for hours!! He would do best with someone that can dedicate time to get him outside and give him lots of exercise daily. Tank is a just a big love bug with lots of energy, you won't regret coming to meet him!!"

      Smoky*F*

      verified

      rescue
      Breed: Chihuahua
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Senior
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Chihuahua (short coat). Adoption Fee: 100.00. Smoky was surrendered to PRBJ because his owners cannot take care of him anymore. He is very nervous right now. He is shy and takes a little to warm up to you. He likes to be held and get attention. We've been fostering Smoky for a week now. He is a very frightened little guy and will need a lot of time, patience and trust. Movement around him needs to be slow and gentle and he responds best if you are on his level at first. He has bonded with me (foster mom) the most because I am around the most. He will let my husband hold him sometimes but you can just feel the fear in his body language. He must be on a leash outside as I think he would run out of fear. He does mark in the house so I have been leaving a belly band on him during the day. He is crated at night and I take it off then as he does not mark in his crate.

      Zeus the one...

      verified

      rescue
      Breed: Chihuahua
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Senior
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Chihuahua (medium coat). Adoption Fee: 60.00. Won't you please open your heart and home to help Zeus have a home again. October 2017 foster update: Zeus had the pressure go up in his remaining eyes and has had 2 more eye drops added, for a total of 4 different ones, with a total of 11 drops daily. It was also found that the left side of his heart is enlarged and he has been put on a heart medication. The vet has recommended that if he is adopted, it should be into a home where he will be the only dog. June 2017 foster update : Zeus is up to a good weight and is a content boy. We have found that giving him a "snack" after he has been out for the night and had his eyedrops, is helping him sleep through the night. He has no eyesight and is very cautious walking around. He likes to be held sometimes but not for long periods. We have dog beds all over the house and he has a couple of favorites he moves between. He barks if he wants/needs something - you get to figure out what it is! It could mean he needs to go out, he wants water, he wants to move to a different location or he is hungry! He does need to be closely supervised in the yard due to his eyesight. February 2017 foster update: Zeus had some bloodwork done in January due to some issues he was having and is now on a special prescription diet. He is not able to have any other food or treats but is doing well with his new food. He is still adjusting to his loss of vision and appears to have none left in his remaining eye though I do believe he may see some shadow/light depending on the surroundings. I use the word "touch" when I am going to touch him and "lift" when I am going to pick him up. That helps somewhat with his startling but he tends to get "lost" in the yard as he loses his bearings frequently. He does like a good neck scratching after his eye drops. He does tend to get up pre-dawn and bark to let you know he needs to go out and that he is hungry. I have been feeding him a small amount and then he will go back to bed for a couple of hours. December 2016 foster update : Unfortunately Zeus' left eye worsened significantly and had to be removed a couple of weeks ago. His stitches are out and he is healing well and out of pain thankfully. It is now obvious that he sees very little out of his right eye and so he is having to do quite a bit of adjusting to his new world. He still gets 2 different eye drops in his remaining eye and goes to the doggy eye specialist and this will continue for the rest of his life. For his safety, he will need a home without an inground pool or stairs and one that has a fence. September foster update: Zeus was examined by an eye specialist and diagnosed with Endothelial Dystrophy in both eyes and possible Glaucoma in his left eye. He is on multiple eye drops at this time, some 4x daily, and will continue on at least some of them for the rest of his life. He does well getting around the house and his ear and skin infections are cleared up He does need medicated baths at least once or twice weekly. He spends much of the time sleeping and he eats mainly dry food. He loves to be petted and will nudge you for more when you stop. Zeus loves to lay in the sun and will go outside and just throw himself down on the driveway in the sun. We have to make him come in so he doesn't get overheated! We have multiple dog crates and beds around the house and he seems to like them all! He is cautious while getting around but finds his way where he wants to go! Poor Zeus was left outside our building. Judy got to work at 5:30 a.m. and there he was left in a carrier crate. He had nails that were so overgrown he couldn't even walk and cataracts in both eyes. Judy sent him to the vet to get checked out. He is not old our vet said about 5. He will melt your heart. He is so sweet and quiet and loves to get taken outside for a walk. If you want a lap dog this is the one. He is ready for adoption...Honestly he is such a great dog that I am shocked that he has not been adopted! Due to his limited eyesight, Zeus would do best in a home without an inground pool or flights of stairs. Also, since he startles easily, he would do best with only older, very considerate children .

      Breed: Chinese Shar-Pei-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Chinese Shar-Pei / Mixed (short coat). Adoption Fee: 100.00. Hypno has been with us since January, he was owner surrendered. His owners wife did not want a dog around. He just needs someone to have time and patience and supply him with love. Hypno would do best in a home with no small dogs or cats. He is housetrained. Our kennel staff feel's that Hypno would get along better with larger female dog. At the time of the meet we would always have you bring your dog in so we can all observe the two dogs together. He is also very playful. When we first got Hypno in he went to our vet, Animal Hospital at Vista Lakes and had Entropian Eye Surgery. Entropion is an abnormality of the eyelids in which the eyelid "rolls" inward. This inward rolling often causes the hair on the surface of the eyelid to rub against the cornea (outer part of the eyeball) resulting in pain, corneal ulcersor corneal erosions. Since his surgery Hypno has no recurrance and his eyes are great. If you are interested in trying Hypno please put a dog 4 a day application in. You won't regret it.

      rescue
      Breed: Mutt
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Young
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Adoption Fee: 200.00. His girlfriend is Karma that's having a litter of 5 @ Lisa Cooper. Tigger is a very handsome boy... but more prominent is his completely silly personality! He sees his tail out of the corner of his eye and flips around like a kitten. He is so self-entertaining, it’s comical! He’s also very interested in his shadow, but hasn’t figured out how to chase it as it just won’t seem to run… but that tail is fast! Tigger loves other dogs, but he is doggie selective. Tigger is a newcomer (6/10/17) to PRBJ so we are still learning his ways, but probably safe to say at this point that he would not do well with kitties since he likes to chase (although his sponsor says she will work on that – we will see!). When he saw children at the vets office he was very excited to go play, but again, we’ve not had him in that arena just yet. He came to us with a little female and the two of them seemed to be pretty well bonded. He hasn’t shown any issues with other dogs, so with proper introductions, should be fine with a doggie brother or sister. He’s a strong boy but very compact weighing in at just over 40 pounds. This silly boy would make a great companion for anyone who wants to have a pup with lots of energy to keep up with their active life style.

Bella was lucky enough to be rescued from being put down. This sweet girl is crate-trained, playful, and enjoys going for walks.
