A.K.A. : A mongrel, mixed-breed dog
Overview: A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.

More About Mutt Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

I am a 6-year-old Labrador Retriever that weighs 52 lbs. I come from a rough and scary background that has shaped me into who I am today. I’m looking for a patient forever family that can continue to shape me into the confident and brave dog that I long to be. I am a very shy girl and am mostly scared of everything. Until finding my foster home, I had never experienced the things that most dogs experience even as a young puppy. I’m just starting to get used to being around people that are nice to me. I get very nervous when meeting new people and just want to run away because I’m not sure of how they will treat me. It turns out that most people tend to be very nice. I have a very nice foster family that is teaching me what it’s like to feel love from humans. I adore the man in my foster family and like to follow him around. I really enjoy to snuggle with him to take a nap. I haven’t snuggled with anyone else yet, but I think I’ll get brave enough to try it eventually. In my foster home, I sleep in the basement. I have slept in my crate a few times but am more comfortable on my couch where it’s quiet and safe downstairs. My foster family has tried to introduce me to toys, but I don’t care much for them. I am still trying to learn how to tell my family that I need to go outside to potty. I have had a few accidents in the house because I couldn’t find a way to tell them that I needed to go potty. Outside can be a scary place with all the sounds though. Loud noises make me jump, especially when I’m outside. In my forever home, I will need another dog to show me how to become the confident family dog that I so desire to be. With the right family that understands my needs and past, I know I will continue to be rehabilitated and have a new life to shape who I am for the better! Many of our dogs are rescued from commercial breeders where they spent their lives getting comfort from their canine friends. In turn, most require another companion dog in their forever home in order for them to feel safe. If you are interested in a particular dog, and do not currently have a dog residing with you, please understand that your home might not be the right fit for many of our dogs. Please email us for more information DOB: 9/5/07 Requires another dog in home: No Okay with dogs of all sizes: Only under certain circumstances Requires a fenced yard: No Okay with children under 12 years old: No Hi, I’m Razzle. I am about 9 years old and weigh 85 pounds. I’m a lovable girl who seeks a forever home where I am wanted and loved. I can be very entertaining and love my squeaky toys. I also enjoy rolling in the grass and am friendly with the people I’ve met so far on my journey. As far as my eating and exercise habits, I do best on a regular schedule. I love mealtime and have had to learn some manners. I even can sit before they give me my food! I can do the shake command as well! As long as you have some treats for me :) I am potty trained and do best when taken out regularly and immediately after meals. I let my family know when I need to go to the bathroom and only have accidents if my family doesn't take me out when I let them know, often by getting on your lap or gently mouthing your arm. Such a silly girl! I can turn into a bouncing puppy on any day and love walks! I am a sniffer and take smells very seriously. I can get a little mesmerized by things that catch my eye since the outside world is all new to me. I wish I could be a detective, I would be a very good one! I think I would like to live in a home something like this: An owner who can be a strong pack leader who also has a calm and confident disposition and can handle a large breed dog. Previous ownership with rottweiler or mastiff breeds would be beneficial! No small household pets, since I have somewhat of a prey drive. I prefer an adult only household. Children move fast and sometimes startle me. I would love a quiet and calm home environment. I hope for a neighborhood which has parks and nature paths to explore. I simply am looking for a pack to join and want your love and affection. Once you gain my adoration and respect, I will be such a wonderful companion and addition to your household. My name is Clara and I am about 7 years young! My foster mom says I am the cutest Chihuahua she has ever seen. Don't you agree?! My new life has been awesome and I have been steadily coming out of my shell every day. My favorite activities are cruising around the yard and showing how fast I can run. My tail wags so fast, you wouldn't believe it! I LOVE toys and snuggling on the couch with my doggie friends or person. I sometimes even steal toys from my friends, but it's all in good fun! I would like a home that has a doggie friend in it so I can continue to learn about dog life and have my own snuggle buddy. I also like to chase my canine friends. It's a lot of fun. I have mastered the art of potty training and do awesome on a schedule. Aren't I a little gem?! I am looking for a very special family who can take care of me. I have a heart condition that requires me to eat a special diet and take medicine daily. A family who can give this to me will make me the happiest little pup in the world. If you are looking for a low key snuggle buddy and someone who will make your heart soar, I am your gal! Can you imagine these little legs running down a hill – it’s a site to see! New people sort of still make me nervous, but I am learning more and more every day that people are nice. When you have a scary past like I have had, it takes a while to trust again. I am hoping I can find a family who will understand that I need a little extra patience to warm up to people. Once I am comfortable, I will roll over on my back for belly rubs and I really like when my foster mom scratches my bum. I think I could get used to this! My foster mom also says that I am silly and that I make her laugh every day. I could make you laugh every day, too! I like to pick up toys and carry them around the house – it’s pretty cute. I’ve really fallen in love with toys! I LOVE other dogs and I snuggle with my foster siblings. I would like a home with another pup who will snuggle with me! I am often found cuddling with another pup in one of the dog beds. If your dog needs a cuddle buddy, I may be their guy! Also, the other dogs are teaching me to how to go to the bathroom outside and I am getting better every day! I think with much needed patience and love, I will become the dog I was born to be. I promise if you adopt me that I will love you to the moon and back for the rest of my life! Requires another dog in home: Okay with dogs of all sizes: Requires a fenced yard: Okay with children under 12 years old: ADOPTION EVENTS: Please understand that all of our pets are in foster homes and sometimes "life" happens and the foster family cannot make it to their scheduled adoption event. If you are traveling from a far distance to meet a specific animal, please email us to confirm attendance. ADOPTION PROCEDURE: The first step in our process is to complete an online adoption application on our website: http://www.underdogrescuemn.com/adoptionprocess/ Note: In most circumstances Underdog Rescue will only adopt within 60 miles of Minneapolis, MN. All of our foster animals can be seen by appointment with an approved adoption application. Contact us at http://www.underdogrescuemn.com/contact-us/ if you have further questions. We look for adopters who will give each animal the wonderful life and permanent home that he or she deserves. I am 7 years old and weigh 8 pounds. Life in a home is new to me and I am learning so much! I am coming out of my shell every day and am doing my best to be a brave little Chihuahua. Some days I go to work with my foster mom and other days I stay at home up to 9 hours in a gated area. My foster parents leave me potty pads that I use when they are gone and I am also learning how to go potty outside. I know I will master it eventually! My favorite thing to do is to eat, chew on raw bones and sleep! At meal time, I will wiggle my whole body. I am a champion wiggle butt. Did I mention that I LOVE to eat?! I sleep in bed near my foster mom and will lie on the couch with her. Eventually, I hope to muster enough courage to start cuddling! These are a few of the things I enjoy. J I am still quite nervous around people and do best when folks approach me slowly. As I adjust to my new life, I would prefer to live in a home without children. I would LOVE (and require) another dog companion though, and a small one would be even better! They can teach me how to be brave and that people are fun and loving. And I will teach them how to wiggle. I live with some pups right now and enjoy being their little shadow! And guess what?! I don’t even mind cats. I am a sweet little pup and simply want to learn about all the joys of life. I would love to learn about them with you if you have space for me in your heart! Whaddya say!? He is about 11 years old and 14 pounds. Mooshu is such a sweet little happy man. He is good with other dogs outside the home as long as they aren't too in his face but needs to be an only pet in his forever home. He would do best in a calm home without children as he does not like a lot of action in his environment. He is potty trained, crate trained and leash trained. He LOVES to play with his favorite stuffed toys. He would make a great office pet as he is very calm, quite and relaxed in most situations. Mooshu would do best with an owner with dog experience since he occasionally will get crabby about people coming into his space. We are working on this behavior and he is getting better with a strong pack leader. He is so adorable and sweet, we can't wait for him to find his perfect forever home!! (They also call me Mae Belle.) I just turned 10 years old and about 9 pounds. I think my tenth year of life is going to be the year I find my furever family! I’m a happy, playful little girl who loves to snuggle with my people! I’ve also been known to sit on my furry foster sisters, because I’m used to being in tight quarters with other dogs and it feels good. They don’t mind! My greatest trick is the funny stretch-kick I do with my back legs. It’s pretty adorable. I’m a healthy girl who loves to chew on raw bones or bully sticks and prance around the yard like a 2 year old! I’m really getting the hang of potty training, too. You have to be patient to catch me, but I’m getting braver. Once I trust you, I’m in love with you to the moon and back. I'm a happy girl who LOVES to snuggle, so can I be your fur-ever buddy??
