Posted Breed: Shepherd / Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Please contact Elissa Kurtz (elissak@luckydoganimalrescue.org) for more information about this pet. ADOPTION PENDING! Name: Sable Breed: Shepherd/Terrier Mix Approximate Age: 1-2 years old Approximate Weight: 60lbs Currently Living at: DC foster Has Lived with: Dogs, does OK with dog savvy cats Special Adoption Considerations: Sable has some anxiety issues that an adopter would need to be willing to work through with her. Hi there! My name is Sable and let me tell you- I’ve already had quite the life. I don’t quite know how this happened, but somehow I ended up in a shelter with my litter of SIX puppies. There were a lot of other dogs in cages and it was loud and cold on that cement floor. Then the amazing folks at Lucky Dog came to see me and now I get to travel all the way to the DC area in hopes that someone there will want to take me home. I'm waiting every day for my chance to find someone to love, cuddle, and play with! So a bit about me: I've got a really beautiful and soft tri-colored coat and big floppy ears- that will do whatever you tell them to (with some proper training, that is)! Right now, I’m about 1-2 years old and 60 lovable pounds. My age means that I am likely done growing—but no matter how big I get I’ll always think of myself as a lap dog. The folks at the shelter say that I do really well with other dogs and would also do ok with a dog-savvy kitty. They are not sure how I will interact with kids yet, but the folks at Lucky Dog can try to find out for you if you need to know! I’ve been daydreaming everyday about my new family, and I've decided I would love to go to a home with some folks that will take me on hikes, runs, and trips to the dog park to play with my canine friends. I don’t think I would be able to stop wagging my tail if I had my very own human who will give me lots of belly rubs and get me cool toys to play with. If my new family would take me to obedience classes so that I could use my smarts to learn tons of new tricks that would be amazing. If you think I might be the right dog for you, then please let my adoptions coordinator know! I do hope to hear from you soon! Woofs and tail wags, Sable Like most shelter dogs, Sable may need a refresher on housetraining. She is likely crate trained. Sable has tested positive and been treated for for Heartworm disease. Heartworm is not contagious to people or other pets, but results from mosquito bites. Heartworm, if left untreated, is life threatening, but after treatment, dogs that were heartworm positive should suffer no significant long-term effects so long as they are kept on a monthly heartworm preventative. The adoption fee for this dog is $450, which includes the cost of routine vetting, including vaccinations, spay/neuter, and heartworm treatment. If you are interested in adopting, please download our Adoption Questionnaire and email it to Elissa at ElissaK@LuckyDogAnimalRescue.org! A.K.A. : A mongrel, mixed-breed dog
Overview: A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.

More About Mutt Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Come meet Marina and other great adoptable dogs this Sunday (NOV 19) from 12-2 pm at the PetSmart in Gaithersburg (218 Kentlands Blvd, Gaithersburg, MD 20878)!!!!!! MARINA NEEDS A FOSTER OR FOREVER HOME!!!! Name: Marina Best Guess for Breed: Hound mix Best Guess for Age: 3 yrs. SEX: Female Approximate Weight: 52 lbs. Has Lived With: Other dogs Currently Living at: Boarding in D.C. where she gets to play with her dog friends all day! Special adoption considerations: Because she is a hound, we would like to caution those who live in apartments as they sometimes like to howl! Heeeeeeeeeey!! HAY! Well, Hiiiiiii-Howdy!! My name is Marina, and I am a 3-year-old, 52-pound Houndiest Hound mix. SO houndy! I know! I have a hard time resisting myself, too. Now that I have your attention, what's the deal, Hoomans? I have been patiently waiting for my forever home, but for some reason, I'm having a LEEEEEETTLE bit of trouble getting noticed. Therefore, I have composed a list of skills and talents I've developed in my time here in boarding: 1) If the smoke alarm goes off when you're cooking, I will make sure to toss my head back and howl along so you know it is going off, without a doubt... you know... just in case you didn't notice. 2) Your small human has a dirty diaper? I'm on it, and will sniff their rear end in the most socially inappropriate manner I can, in order to let you know. 3) Squirrels and groundhogs fear me; Chihuahuas want to BE me. 4) The ground is my own bouquet of flowers; you will notice things about the world--and things I should not eat but will try to--like never before. 5) No one listens better than a hound dog when you are having a bad day. Our faces are naturally sympathetic and appropriately sad-looking at all times. I'm not sure how I'll do with cats or kids yet, but we can certainly find out if you've got 'em! Additionally, I can't wait for you to sign me up for some obedience classes. I'm a very scholarly girl and can't wait to show you how good and well-mannered I can be. I know, I know, I know... this has all just been a crazy misunderstanding. So, fill out and submit your application today! I can't wait!! Like most shelter dogs, Marina may need a refresher on house-training. She is likely crate trained. Marina has tested positive and been treated for for Heartworm disease. Heartworm is not contagious to people or other pets, but results from mosquito bites. Heartworm, if left untreated, is life threatening, but after treatment, dogs that were heartworm positive should suffer no significant long-term effects so long as they are kept on a monthly heartworm preventative. Name: Brandi Best Guess for Breed: Chihuahua mix Best Guess for Age: 3 years SEX: female Approximate Weight: 11.4 lbs. Has Lived With: other dogs Currently Living in a home, Brandi needs a forever home. Special adoption considerations: No cats or apartments; must go to a home with a second dog. Hi, my name is Brandi and yes, I really am as cute as my picture! People joke about my big ears but I think they make me look special. You can see for yourself by coming to meet me at a Lucky Dog Adoption event! Update from Brandi’s foster: Brandi is one of the sweetest, most affectionate, and devoted dogs I have ever known. She is shy at first but it doesn't take her long to warm up and once she does you are in for a treat. She gets so excited when you get home that she doesn't just wag her take she wags her entire body! She always wants to be by your side or on your lap. She just needs a gentle, patient, and devoted owner who is willing to work with her, fortunately she is very motivated by treats! Brandi is an anxious little girl who needs an understanding adopter. Our adoption events can be scary for small dogs but Brandi has made great progress in just a few weeks. She is now more comfortable with all the people and other dogs around her. Going to a home with another dog will help her feel more confident. She loves being with her people and will bond tightly with her new family. It takes her a bit longer to warm up to men but she will do so when she's ready. Brandi has a bit of separation anxiety and would do best with someone who is home most of the day. She can be quite the barker so a single family home is the best environment for Brandi. Don't let her small size fool you. Brandi is one active little dog and will need plenty of exercise. She loves her daily walks but you will need to give her some running time to tire her out. Due to her anxiety she's not a candidate for doggie daycare or the dog park so a fenced-in back yard where she can play with you and your dog is ideal. Brandi could benefit from obedience classes to learn just how good a dog she can be. She gets nervous when around something she finds new and scary, which often triggers her barking. Brandi's adopter will need to be committed to training to help reduce Brandi's anxiety and make her feel secure in her new home. Like most shelter dogs, Brandi may need a refresher on housetraining. She is likely crate trained. Brandi gets along well with other dogs but cannot go to a home with cats. Brandi would do best in a home with older children as she startles easily. The adoption fee for this dog is $350, which includes the cost of routine vetting, including vaccinations and spay/neuter. Name: PETEY Best Guess for Breed: Terrier Mix Best Guess for Age: 1.5 years as of 6/8/17 SEX: Male Approximate Weight: 45 - 50 lbs Has Lived With: Other dogs Currently Living at: local foster Special Considerations: Petey needs help working on polite leash manners when around other dogs. Hola! My name is Petey and let me tell you- I’ve already had quite the life. I was born and raised on the streets of Puerto Rico until some wonderful rescuers saved me from long days roaming around and being very hungry. Since then, I have learned how to be a good boy and I've gotta tell ya- I REALLY like living in a home! Check out this video of me in my current foster home: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zKyTLMYW6ZE! I got to travel on the plane all the way to the DC area in hopes that someone here will want to take me home. I'm waiting every day for my chance to find someone to love, cuddle, and play with! So a bit about me: I've got a really beautiful and soft white coat with some brown spots just on my face! I've also got big floppy ears- that will do whatever you tell them to (with some proper training, that is)! Right now, I’m about 1.5 years old and 45 - 50 lovable pounds. My age means that I am likely done growing—but no matter how big I get I’ll always think of myself as a lap dog. I do really well with other dogs - as long as I am given a proper introduction. We are not sure how I will interact with kids or cats yet, but the folks at Lucky Dog can try to find out for you if you need to know! Woofs and tail wags, PETEY A NOTE FROM PETEY'S FOSTER PARENT: Petey is an extremely well mannered house guest. He is fully house trained and has had zero accidents in the 2+ weeks that he has been living with me. He is also crate trained and will go to his crate for bedtime, or if he is just wanting a nap. He does not jump on the furniture or bed (although if you invited him Im sure he would), he does not chew anything that he isn't supposed to, he does not get into the trash, he does not counter surf, he does not bark very much, and he will let you know if he needs to go out. He knows basic commands, such as sit, lay down, and stay and we work on these daily. He will even sit and stay while you fill his bowl. We are at the point that i don't crate him unless I know that I will be gone for 3+ hours. He does like to be outside and is pretty good at fetch, although he needs a bit more work on the "give" part of the game. He also does well at the dog park and will focus his time and energy to whatever balls are around more so than the other dogs. His leash manners have improved drastically and has cut down on his tendency to pull (still happens when he gets excited though). He has also made great strides with his leash anxiety and while he has his days, most days he is able to properly meet other dogs on leash without incident. There are definitely some tricks to this which I would be happy to share as I think this will be an ongoing thing to work on with Petey. Like most shelter dogs, Petey may need a refresher on housetraining. He is likely crate trained. The adoption fee for this dog is $350, which includes the cost of routine vetting, including vaccinations and spay/neuter. Name: Lucy Loo Breed: boxer/shepherd mix Approximate Age: 2-3 years SEX: female Approximate Weight: 50 lbs Has Lived With: dogs Currently Living at: DC foster Special adoption considerations: Lucy Loo must go to an experienced dog owner who is comfortable working with a trainer to help her be more confident and comfortable. My name is Lucy Loo. Through no fault of my own, I found myself in the shelter with three puppies (Lewis, Lola and Larry). My puppies have all been adopted and I am excited to be in DC to find my furever home. I am dreaming of a family who will keep me active and give me lots of opportunities to socialize. I also heard that dogs with homes get to go on walks and sleep inside on their very own beds, which sounds pretty great. I am a volunteer favorite at Lucky Dog! My fosters love me because I ride nicely in the car and am great at home. I am happy staying in and watching Netflix and ordering in but also love to go on hikes and like to show a fitbit who is boss. I also enjoy roller derby and crocheting. My ultimate goal is to become a spokespup for Barkbox Super Chewer. I follow Lexy the Elderbull on Instagram and she is a real role model for me—she knows how to wear a tutu and pearls and make it look so effortless. I get nervous when I meet other dogs on leash so I need my new family to help me work on that. Because they loved having me and recognize what an amazing girl I am, my fosters have sponsored me and whoever adopts me will receive a training package (included in the adoption fee) to help me with my transition and to get settled into my forever home. Like most shelter dogs, Lucy Loo may need a refresher on housetraining. She is likely crate trained. Here is an update from my foster family: Lucy Loo is such a sweetheart. She is out of the puppy stage but did not seem to have any structure prior to coming to Lucky Dog. She is eagerly learning to sit and impress us with her smarts. She is very food driven, making her training easy and fun. Lucy will do best with strong leadership from an owner as she will not hesitate to be queen of the house. She is very playful but certainly a couch potato too. She loves tug-a-war, chewing on her bones, destroying a chew toy, wrestling with other big dogs and playing fetch. Lucy Loo loves her walks but is even more excited to get back on the couch to snuggle back up to us. She has already been on a hike at Great Falls and was up for the challenge- what a rock climber she is! She does well with other dogs off leash. Lucy does amazing in cars as well- the best foster in the car we have ever had! We are so happy to have her in our home and know she will make the perfect addition as a mature mama in her forever family soon. The adoption fee for this dog is $350, which includes the cost of routine vetting, including vaccinations and spay/neuter. Adorable terrier mix looking for her furever family!! Jackie NEEDS A FOREVER HOME!!!! Name: Jackie Best Guess for Breed: Jack Russell Mix Best Guess for Age: 6-7 yrs old as of 07/14/17 SEX: Female Approximate Weight: 14 lbs Has Lived With: Dogs, Cats Currently Living at: DC Foster. Needs a FOREVER HOME!! Special Adoption Considerations: Jackie currently lives in a foster home with cats, and she is doing pretty well with them so far :) she does not really like dogs or people getting close in her face, so a home with other energetic dogs and young children may not be the best fit. Jackie also has some problems with urinary incontinence. However, it is being managed very well with daily medication. Jackie can't wait to come to DC and find her forever home! This sweet lady is a 6-7 year old Jack Russell mix, weighing about 14 lbs. One of our great Lucky Dog volunteers found and rescued Jackie right before the 4th of July! And Jackie is thanking her lucky stars that she gets to come up to DC and meet her new family!! Since she is past her puppy years, she won't have all that crazy puppy energy! Though as a terrier, she is going to love playing with toys and running around a dog park. Don't let her age fool you, this Jack Russell is still going to want to run, play, and exercise!! Jackie loves to play in the fall foliage and nap in the sun. Jackie is a great balance of playful terrier and couch potato. Make this adorable lady a part of your family!! Like most shelter dogs, Jackie may need a refresher on housetraining. She is likely crate trained. The adoption fee for this dog is $350, which includes the cost of routine vetting, including vaccinations and spay/neuter. SIMBAD NEEDS A FOSTER OR FOREVER HOME!!!! Name: Simbad Best Guess for Breed: German Shepherd Mix Best Guess for Age: 4 years (as of 7/18/17) SEX: Male Approximate Weight: 75 pounds (as of 7/18/17) Has Lived With: Other dogs and kids Currently Living at: Shelter in Puerto Rico - needs a foster when he arrives in DC, or better yet - a forever home! Meet handsome Simbad! Simbad is a four-year-old shepherd mix weighing in at 75 lbs and he can't wait to meet you! Simbad, though out of the crazy puppy stages, will still need PLENTY of exercise and cannot wait to learn with you in DC! He's dreaming of long walks and trips to the dog park in his future and would love to play with new toys, explore the neighborhood and even go to obedience classes to show off just how smart he is! He's counting down the minutes until he can meet your friends, go on trips, and cuddle up with you on the couch after a long day. As a shepherd, he will need plenty of mental stimulation daily, as well, to stay happy and healthy! Simbad is GREAT with other dogs, so he'd be a good addition to an existing pack or happy to soak up all the attention as an only dog. He has also lived with kids and does great with them as well! He hasn't yet met a cat, so if you have one please let us know and we can have him cat-tested. Like most shelter dogs, Simbad may need a refresher on housetraining. He is likely crate trained. The adoption fee for this dog is $350, which includes the cost of routine vetting, including vaccinations and spay/neuter. ADOPTION PENDING!! If you are viewing Happy’s bio on Petfinder, please click below for more information. Name: Happy Best guess as to breed: terrier mix Best guess as to age: 1 years Approximately Weight: 53 lbs Has Lived with: Dogs, kids Currently Living at: scary rural shelter - Happy has adopters waiting for his arrival Hi there! My name is Happy and I'm a 53 pound, male, one-year-old terrier mix looking for my furever home. Right now I'm at a scary shelter and I'm not sure how I got here. I still try to keep my spirits up and I try to help all the other dogs and people by being as happy as I can be all the time. The people are pretty nice and I have made some doggie friends, but it's really cold and loud. Sometimes my friends and I talk about how great it would be to find a furever home and people who will love us furever and ever. That would be such a dream come true! I've heard that at a furever home you get a nice soft dog bed with some fun toys and some yummy treats. At a furever home you get snuggles and kisses and lots and lots of pats. Sometimes you even get to go to the dog park and on long walks to places like a beach or the mountains. It sounds too good to be true! I just can't wait! At my furever home I'll try to be the best boy I can. I'd really like to go to obedience school to learn my manners. I know it's very important to be polite and well-behaved. I want my furever people to be able to take me every where with them! I just love other dogs and people, especially kids! I haven't met and cats yet, but I'm willing to give it a try. Do you need some more happy in your life? Then I'm your boy! Like most shelter dogs, Happy may need a refresher on house training. He is likely crate trained. The adoption fee for this dog is $350, which includes the cost of routine vetting, including vaccinations, spay/neuter, and transportation to DC.
