Posted Breed: Shepherd / Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Please contact Elissa Kurtz (elissak@luckydoganimalrescue.org) for more information about this pet. ADOPTION PENDING! Name: Sable Breed: Shepherd/Terrier Mix Approximate Age: 1-2 years old Approximate Weight: 60lbs Currently Living at: DC foster Has Lived with: Dogs, does OK with dog savvy cats Special Adoption Considerations: Sable has some anxiety issues that an adopter would need to be willing to work through with her. Hi there! My name is Sable and let me tell you- I’ve already had quite the life. I don’t quite know how this happened, but somehow I ended up in a shelter with my litter of SIX puppies. There were a lot of other dogs in cages and it was loud and cold on that cement floor. Then the amazing folks at Lucky Dog came to see me and now I get to travel all the way to the DC area in hopes that someone there will want to take me home. I'm waiting every day for my chance to find someone to love, cuddle, and play with! So a bit about me: I've got a really beautiful and soft tri-colored coat and big floppy ears- that will do whatever you tell them to (with some proper training, that is)! Right now, I’m about 1-2 years old and 60 lovable pounds. My age means that I am likely done growing—but no matter how big I get I’ll always think of myself as a lap dog. The folks at the shelter say that I do really well with other dogs and would also do ok with a dog-savvy kitty. They are not sure how I will interact with kids yet, but the folks at Lucky Dog can try to find out for you if you need to know! I’ve been daydreaming everyday about my new family, and I've decided I would love to go to a home with some folks that will take me on hikes, runs, and trips to the dog park to play with my canine friends. I don’t think I would be able to stop wagging my tail if I had my very own human who will give me lots of belly rubs and get me cool toys to play with. If my new family would take me to obedience classes so that I could use my smarts to learn tons of new tricks that would be amazing. If you think I might be the right dog for you, then please let my adoptions coordinator know! I do hope to hear from you soon! Woofs and tail wags, Sable Like most shelter dogs, Sable may need a refresher on housetraining. She is likely crate trained. Sable has tested positive and been treated for for Heartworm disease. Heartworm is not contagious to people or other pets, but results from mosquito bites. Heartworm, if left untreated, is life threatening, but after treatment, dogs that were heartworm positive should suffer no significant long-term effects so long as they are kept on a monthly heartworm preventative. The adoption fee for this dog is $450, which includes the cost of routine vetting, including vaccinations, spay/neuter, and heartworm treatment. A.K.A. : A mongrel, mixed-breed dog
Overview: A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.

More About Mutt Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: Spaniel / American Foxhound / Mixed (short coat). Please contact Sheila McGee (sheilamcgee2001@yahoo.com) for more information about this pet. Easy-going and handsome young man looking for a forever home! ***Come meet Clark and other, great adoptable dogs this Sun. (Feb. 19) from 12-2 pm at the Petco 5825 Leesburg Pike, Bailey's Crossroads, VA 22041)*** CLARK NEEDS A FOREVER HOME!!!! Name: Clark Breed: Spaniel/hound mix Approximate Age: 2 years old SEX: male Approximate Weight: 55-60 pounds Has Lived With: other dogs, cats Currently Living at: DC area foster home -- Clark needs a forever home ASAP! Special Considerations: Clark would do best in a home with a second dog to help show him the ropes and build confidence! Hi! I'm Clark! I'm a 2-year-old, 51-pound hound/spaniel mix, and i was hoping Santa would bring me a home of my own for Christmas. That didn't happen, but I'm still waiting and hoping that someone will come along for me very soon! I've got a reputation, Humans... a reputation for being such a good, good boy! The nice people at the shelter down South said that I am an easygoing guy who loves to run play with my four-legged friends. And though they can't be sure, they even think I might be good with kids because I'm so nice! Do you have kids? I sure would love to meet them and give them lots of kisses!! Oh, man... it makes my tail wag just thinking about it!! I can't wait to go on hikes with you, or trips to the dog park... just thinking about all those good sniffs to smell makes my nose start twitching. On the other hand, I'm also looking forward to lounging around on your couch, or on a comfy bed of my very own... or maybe even YOUR bed (when you're not looking -- hee, hee!). That sounds like bliss to me! I met the cats in my foster home and didn't mind them...they rubbed up against my legs and I just sniffed at them. They were pretty nice. I also met some kids, and some of them were loud and scary, but others were nice and gentle and I really liked them. Since I am a pretty shy guy, I need to go to a home where there is already a resident dog(s) to help "show me the ropes" and make me feel more comfortable and confident! Also, it's very important that you sign me up for some obedience classes, because even though I'm a sweetie with a lot of love to give, I need to practice my manners so I can show you what an even better boy I can be. So, how 'bout it? Are you ready to have a handsome young man like me join your family? How 'bout you fill out and submit an application for me today! Like most shelter dogs, Clark may need a refresher on housetraining. He is likely crate trained. The adoption fee for this dog is $350, which includes the cost of routine vetting, including vaccinations and spay/neuter. Come meet Lucy Loo and other other great, adoptable dogs at this weekend’s events: Sat. (Feb. 18) from 12-2 pm at The Cheeky Puppy (1709 Connecticut Ave NW (CT and R St NW) in DuPont Circle) Sun. (Feb. 19) from 12-2 pm at the Petco 5825 Leesburg Pike, Bailey's Crossroads, VA 22041) LUCY LOO NEEDS A FOREVER HOME!!!! Name: Lucy Loo Breed: boxer/shepherd mix Approximate Age: 2-3 years SEX: female Approximate Weight: 50 lbs Has Lived With: dogs and cats and a rabbit! Currently Living at: DC foster Special adoption considerations: none known at this time My name is Lucy Loo. Through no fault of my own, I found myself in the shelter with three puppies (Lewis, Lola and Larry). I am excited to be in DC to find my furever home. I am dreaming of a family who will keep me active and give me lots of opportunities to socialize. I also heard that dogs with homes get to go on walks and sleep inside on their very own beds, which sounds pretty great. I have lived with other dogs and cats and they are alright by me. Like most shelter dogs, Lucy Loo may need a refresher on housetraining. She is likely crate trained. Here is an update from my foster family: Lucy Loo is such a sweetheart. She is a very loyal girl who loves her humans and likes to visit with her canine friends. She is out of the puppy stage but did not seem to have any structure prior to coming to Lucky Dog. She is eagerly learning to sit and impress us with her smarts. She is very food driven, making her training easy and fun. Lucy will do best with strong leadership from an owner as she will not hesitate to be queen of the house. She is very playful but certainly a couch potato too. She loves tug-a-war, chewing on her bones, destroying a chew toy, wrestling with other big dogs and playing fetch. Lucy Loo loves her walks but is even more excited to get back on the couch to snuggle back up to us. She went on her first hike at Great Falls last weekend and was up for the challenge- what a rock climber she is! She does well with other dogs off leash. Lucy does amazing in cars as well- the best foster in the car we have ever had! We are so happy to have her in our home and know she will make the perfect addition as a mature mama in her forever family soon. Lucy Loo's adopters will receive a training package (included in the adoption fee) to help her transition and get settled into her furever home! The adoption fee for this dog is $350, which includes the cost of routine vetting, including vaccinations and spay/neuter. Name: Harley Breed: Shepherd Mix Approximate Age: 4 years old Approximate Weight: 52 lbs Currently Living at: A DC boarding facility- Harley is looking for a foster, or even better yet, a FUR-ever home!! Special Considerations: Harley has been teased by children in his past, so he would do best in a home with no children. Hi!!! My name is Harley and I'm looking for my new family. I came from a scary shelter down in South Carolina but I'm now in DC in hopes that someone here will want to take me home. I’m hoping they will take me on walks and visits to the dog park. I’m also hoping that I can snuggle up with them at night, get some belly rubs and enjoy a few treats! So, a little bit about me. I’m considered to be an adult at 4 years old- so I won't do much more growing. I love cuddling and give the sweetest puppy kisses. I’m also a very smart little pup so I can’t wait to go to obedience classes with YOU. I hear it is SO. MUCH. FUN. I have a brindle colored coat, a white tummy and chin and floppy ears that make me look so cute! I’m a shepherd mix and I'm about 50lbs- fully grown! I like other dogs so I wouldn’t mind having a canine sibling but I’m also perfectly fine being top dog in my family. I would prefer to go to a home without children as they've been mean to me in my past, and I'm not sure how I feel about cats- but the folks at Lucky Dog can test me if you have one! See how flexible I am! So, do you have room in your home for me? Like most shelter dogs, Harley may need a refresher on housetraining. He is likely crate trained. Purvis needs a forever home! Has Lived with: Dogs Special Adoption Considerations: Needs a second dog, High Energy, Has some stranger danger issues especially around men- will need an adopter who is willing to work with him on this Purvis is a sweet 60 pound, crate trained, goofy Lab Mix who is 3 years old. He is very playful, active and has a curious personality and will need mental and physical stimulation on a daily basis. Playing with other dogs is his favorite thing to do. Whether it's out in public, a dog park or a doggy daycare he loves all dogs. Sometimes he needs a slow introduction to puppies because he is practically still a puppy himself but doesn't understand that his size and demeanor can be scary to the little ones! Most of the time after an introduction, he plays great with them (puppies). He enjoys walks, jogs, hikes, swimming, chasing soccer balls and playing in the snow! After a nice walk or playing, Purvis loves to lay on the floor or walks into his crate and chew on a bone while you relax. Sometimes he has a mind of his own when he sees a squirrel or another furry friend. Purvis knows most of the basic commands and some tricks too: - Sit - Stay - Come - Leave It - Let Go - Down - Heel - Break(Free) - Off - Away - Get Busy(Bathroom) - Crate(Bed) - Shake - Roll Over Purvis will need a committed owner to provide more training and exercise because he is a very smart and energetic dog. He will need a patient and experienced dog owner to remind him who the leader is in the family. He is intelligent, so he will learn to follow your rules quickly but he needs someone with a firm grasp of pack leadership in order to respond positively to training. Unfortunately, Purvis was not properly socialized as a puppy and is a bit shy and scared in new settings and around new people. He loves everyone but is a big scaredy cat in certain situations and would do really well living in a home that already has another dog to help Purvis learn the ropes of how to be a confident pup. The adoption fee for this dog is $350, which includes the cost of routine vetting, including vaccinations. Location: Washington, DC
Posted Breed: Australian Shepherd / Mixed (short coat). Please contact Sam Nelson (samn@luckydoganimalrescue.org) for more information about this pet. BLUE EYED BEAUTY NEEDS FOREVER HOME! SASHA NEEDS A FOREVER HOME!!!! Name: Sasha Breed: Australian Shepherd Mix Approximate Age: 2 years Sex: Female Approximate Weight: 33lbs Currently Living at: DC foster Special Adoption Considerations: Sasha prefers not to share her home with other dogs or cats, and would do best with children over 15 years old. I was saying to myself just this morning, "Sasha," I said, "Sasha, you know what you need? You need a person all your own." So I sat down to write this post for the nice people at Lucky Dog, because apparently that's the kind of thing they do - find nice people for extremely intelligent and lovable, doggies who are...I shudder to type this...HOMELESS. That's right: I have no home to call my own. Could you be persuaded to volunteer yours? This little charmer knows she's got it and is not afraid to flaunt it. Sasha seeks a mature and experienced new owner who can meet her every need and spoil her beyond her wildest dreams. Sound like you? This 2 year old spunky, good time girl is intelligent, focused, and learns new tricks quickly. She’s quite the smarty pants and loves to show off her new skills like sit, down, and release for an audience of friends! Being an Aussie mix, Sasha will need plenty of exercise and mental stimulation to be a happy and healthy pup. She can't wait to go to obedience training with her new family so that she can bond with her people and become her very best self! Though we don't know why she ended up in the shelter, we know she doesn't belong there! This sweetheart loves the company of her humans but prefers not to share her home with other dogs or cats. She loves playing with toys (especially tennis balls!) and eating yummy treats, but at the end of the day, Sasha loves nothing more than cuddling with the people that love her. Want to make Sasha a part of your family? Fill out an application! Sasha's foster mom says, "She likes to cuddle, be scratched behind her ears and on her belly, give kisses and take naps. Sasha also is playful and loves to chase balls, a frisbee, and her own tail. She is super loyal once she bonds with her people. She is a good house guest who respects her boundaries (she doesn't jump on furniture unless invited or chew anything other than her toys). Sasha also does very well in her crate." Here is a cute video of Sasha being a goofball: https://youtu.be/-3kDvL2ZDVI The adoption fee for this dog is $350, which includes the cost of routine vetting, including vaccinations and spay/neuter. Posted Breed: Boxer / Mixed (short coat). Sweet boy looking for a second chance with YOU! SECOND CHANCE NEEDS A FOSTER OR FOREVER HOME!!!! Name: Second Chance Breed: Boxer Mix Approximate Age: 3 years SEX: Male Approximate Weight: 55 lbs Has Lived With: Other Dogs Currently Living at: A cold and scary shelter in South Carolina. Second Chance is looking for a foster home, or even better yet, a FUR-ever home! Special adoption considerations: Second Chance is Heartworm Positive but has already been treated and is happily recovering. Hi there! My name is Second Chance and let me tell you- I’ve already had quite the life. The folks at the shelter gave me my name because when they found me, I was in really rough shape. I was super skinny and pretty neglected, but thats all finally behind me. The amazing folks at Lucky Dog tell me that I get to travel all the way to the DC area in hopes that someone there will want to take me home. I'm waiting every day for my (second) chance to find someone to love, cuddle, and play with! So a bit about me: I've got a really beautiful and soft all white coat with a black nose! I've also got big pointy ears- that will do whatever you tell them to (with some proper training, that is)! Right now, I’m about 3 years old and 55 lovable pounds. My age means that I am likely done growing—but no matter how big I get I’ll always think of myself as a lap dog. The folks at the shelter say that I do really well with other dogs. They are not sure how I will interact with kids or cats yet, but the folks at Lucky Dog can try to find out for you if you need to know! Woofs and tail wags, Second Chance Like most shelter dogs, Second Chance may need a refresher on housetraining. He is likely crate trained. Second Chance has tested positive and has been treated for for Heartworm disease. Please contact Allison Tebbe (allisont@luckydoganimalrescue.org) for more information about this pet. Gorgeous bully girl needs a home! MOLLIE TOO NEEDS A FOREVER HOME!!!! Name: Mollie Too Breed: Am Staff/Staffordshire Bull Terrier mix Approximate Age: 3 years 8 months as of 2/2016 Approximate Weight: 50 lbs Currently Living at: Foster home in DC area! HI, I'M MOLLIE TOO! My previous owners left me at my wonderful dog sitters home and never came back, so now I'm looking for my real forever family while I stick around their house for a while. I'm learning so much already in my foster home and I get so excited to learn and play! I LOVE TOYS SO MUCH. Also I've already done place training and I know how to sit, stay, come, shake, and wait! I even have great recall and am comfortable in my crate - how great is that?? I like swimming, hiking, running, fetching, jumping, and everything in between so I need an ACTIVE forever family to keep me physically and mentally exhausted every day. I live to please my humans and would love my owner to be a strong leader who can guide me in what to do. I promise we'll have so much fun!! I would especially love a job like a dog sport (agility?? fly ball?!) so I can impress you with how athletic and smart I am. At the end of the day, I really just want to snuggle up with my human(s), get some ear scratchies, and be told how much I am loved. As a bully breed a lot of people judge me by my looks and misunderstand me - I have SO MUCH love to give, all I want to do is please you and cover you in kisses...promise! Like most bully breed pups I am silly and have lots of personality to show you. Check out these videos of me (plus the one below my pictures) so you can get an idea of all the fun I love to have: Swimming: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8-DsawhiKFQ&feature=youtu.be Trying to eat wind: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0o73BX2xfMk&feature=youtu.be Playing with a big ball I found: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NTXiaXLohaQ&feature=youtu.be I currently live and get along with a cat, so I am happy to live with a feline friend! I can be a little feisty with my dog friends (especially ones with personalities just like mine) so it's probably best I am an only pup who can soak up aaaaall of your attention. I do love kids but due to some minor food guarding I'm working on, it's best I live with kids middle school age and older who can fully understand my boundaries. As a super smart and athletic pup, I'd love to continue to do training for years to come so I can be the best behaved pup on the block. If you have the time and the energy for a big love muffin like me in your life, please email my adoption coordinator! I love my fosters parents but I'd really love to be in a forever home, could it be yours?? When transitioning to a new environment, Mollie Too may need a refresher on housetraining. She is likely crate trained. The adoption fee for this dog is $350, which includes the cost of routine vetting, including vaccinations and spay/neuter.
